to start they used a FX-8350, it is about 3x faster than the PS4 Pro tablet CPU, how could they be so wrong? as discussed before http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/how-powerfull-are-the-cpus-on-current-gen-consoles-32740733/ the PS4 CPU is about as much powerfull as a triple core AMD CPU from 2007, and the PS4 Pro CPU being only a small overclock on the same tablet CPU is expected to perform abou as good as a 2008 AMD quad core like the Pheonom X4 series as stock clocks,

so this affect performance? in CPU bound titles like Elder Scrolls Online you can expect a sytem with 3x CPU power to perform 3x faster, just like my old i5-2400 beats PS4 2 to 1 in BF4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUlcHiXY0cQ

Odd World https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6iBvSxrQsw

and Watchdogs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3STr7uDAUaU

What about the GPU they used? ignoring the much better comparison DF did http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-we-built-a-pc-with-playstation-neo-gpu-tech they decided to use a fully clocked RX-480, that is without question a 40% faster card than what the Pro has, by sayng the PS4 Pro will perform like a RX-480 GS is saying that there will be no performance gap between Pro and Scorpio http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/with-rx480-out-its-now-possible-to-realistic-predi-33258105/

and the stupidity goes on, they said they had to pick a 4gb Vram card to avoid a bottleneck in 4k, but a terrible memory bottleneck is exactly what the Pro has as showed by DF http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-rise-of-the-tomb-raider-ps4-pro-vs-pc-comparison, PS4 Pro have 6gb available for games, in a time most games already use 6gb on system ram alone, even if every developer downgrade their games a lot to make they use only as little as 3gb ram on a game that uses 6gb ram on PC, there will be only a max of 3gb Vram left for the video, so in the best case scenario, PS4 pro has less power and the same amout of memory as a RX-470

about the memory they said "but we think a healthy 8GB of system memory is counterbalanced by the fact that the PS4 Pro doesn’t have to carry the extra performance burden of running a full-fledged operating system like Windows 10 in the background." did gamespot PC "builders" ever looked at task manager to see the amount of ram windows 10 uses? with all those background services and tasks win 10 uses less than 1gb ram, so a PC with 8gb ram + 4gb Vram will have 12gb and 11gb after windows, its about 2x as much as the PS4 Pro, it means you will have much better textures and also much better game with a non downgraded PC version of the game using 5-6-7gb of ram on this PC

top of this incredibly stupid article is the system power draw comparison, they state that they managed to build a comparable system with 319W, while the PS4 Pro is hated at 310W, but its clear that PS4 Pro dont use 310W, is has a low power 30-40W CPU and a underclocked version of a 200W GPU that might use some 100-120W in a total system power draw close to 150-180W,

just to compare, the PC equivalents of PS4's GPU the HD7850 and HD 7870 uses 130W and 175W and his downclocked version on the PS4 uses about 100W, adding the low power CPU at about 130W on the PS4, and this exaclty what PS4 consumes http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-hands-on-with-the-playstation-4-slim-cuh-2000 comparing PS4 Pro to a $700 PC that consumes 319W is the most stupid comparison they could have made, the FX-8350 alone consumes 125W, by their logic, the PS4 that uses nly 130W having the same CPU as the PS4 Pro should use 125W on a 8 core CPU just like the PC and would have 5W left for the GPU

as always, the equivalent PC built with same same amount of money will match or outperform console, you can build a $400 that beats the PS4 Pro and a $700 PC will (if done right) outperform the PS4 Pro almost 2 to 1, and this what you should expect for a $700 system tha has a 3x faster CPU and uses about 2x more power (319W vs 160W)

so they come up with that old console optimization argument, well sony itself admitted that console gamers leave consoles mid generation (2,5 to 3 years) for a better experience on PC, proving that sony itself never believed that stupid opitimization argument (how could consoles not be able to optimized and be obsolete only 2,5 - 3 years after release?) and "to the metal coding" or no overhead APIs are a real thing now on PCs with DX12(also used on xbone), Vulkan, etc, and the results are a 3 to 5% performance increase, it will never make a tablet CPU perform like a 3x faster FX-8350

so nice try gamespot, i hope you finally get all that PS4 Pro adverting money from sony you deserve

@phbz: yeah, they could use the same argument claiming the ps4 pro has 310W while a titan xp + i5 use 319W, because gamespot is very technical now

TLDR

-They used a CPU that is far too strong

-They used a 8GB VRAM GPU and 8GB system memory. The PS4 Pro shares at most 6GB for games total. What?!?!?

-The GPU they used has 5.8 teraflops. The PS4 Pro Gpu has 4.2

-They were running the PC games at a NATIVE 4K and bitching about the performance. We've known since the day of the reveal that the PS4 Pro will be upscaling the games from a near 1440p resolution. Why even run a native 4K benchmark?

-Their PC costs $630.

These "journalist" need to go some where and take a class... And they need to take Colin Moriarty with them!

I saw the article and they really should have downclocked the CPU, I know its more of a challenge to really find a comparable PC model, but at the very least down clock it to 2.2. On the GPU front at least they got the right Polaris chip, it is the RX480 thats in the Pro, but why didn't they downclock it to 911mhz.

On a side note because I see it here too... The specs have been leaked for months and now are official, why do so many still think it's a R9 series card or a RX 470? 36 CU's, only the RX 480 has that. It's 4.2 TF because of the down clock to 911mhz. Which I also wonder why not bulk up the case a bit for some extra cooling and increase the clock speeds?

Anywho, I believe I heard Joker Productions (Youtuber) said that he was going to downclock the RX 480 for some theory benchmarks at some point. I don't know what he's going to do with the CPU since I believe he only owns i7's, but even so at least his will be more accurate than gamespots.

I won't really bother reading all that tech mumbo jumbo...and i have no doubt that PS4 Pro is very underpowered compared to PC's...the only thing i would say is that consoles overcome some of that disadvantage from weaker CPU's since they are dedicate gaming machines that don't need to run OS like Windows who is extremely resource consuming.

Again, PS4 Pro will indeed be very underpowered, just saying.

PS4 has unified memory with zero copy while PCs with dGPU doesn't have this feature.

Knowing about PC parts is faaaar from the only thing GameSpot staff are completely worthless at. I'm actually amazed how in the living hell some of those guys have paying jobs here. It's a gaming website and half of everyone who posts in System Wars knows more about games than the GameSpot staff. It's fucking embarrassing.

Yup, after Pro, slim and PSVR flops hard in sales and goes belly up, I just hope Sony has another building they can sell to keep from going bankrupt. :P

@Litchie: We aren't good writers though. And if you knew how little they make and how expensive it is to live where they do, you would understand why those jobs pull the quality of candidates that they do.

All of the writers/personalities that are worth a damn are long gone and doing their own thing. The ones that are left are... Let's just say Gamespot and IGN have become good "first jobs" for folks in the industry. They're like the summer fast food job of the games journalism world.

Their biggest complaint about total war warhammer was the camera movement, which is hilarious since there are far more important issues to talk about in the game. But that's gamespot for you, they should stick to reviewing corridor or console games, since they don't know how pc games nor pcs work.

Yeah, I here ya. It's just so sad when you think back on how awesome GameSpot was in the past. Now, one day can't go by without me being seriously annoyed by what an idiot working on GameSpot writes on this site for millions of people to see that's comepletely wrong and uninformed. Nice read OP

But really, I don't get why websites do this anyway, try to build their own PS4 Pro PC... Or any other console hardware for that mather. You'll never get a 1:1 comparison so that's worthless.

Perhaps someone that is more tech-savvy knows this better than me, but wouldn't it be easier to downclock a PC to console level via software?

Gamespot care more about hiring people that act like idiots than hiring people that know what they are talking about. It works on Youtube but people come here for a different reason and Gamespot don't seem to get that.

If people wanted to watch idiots they would just go watch Pewdiepie and Jack Septic eye on YouTube.

PS4 has unified memory with zero copy while PCs with dGPU doesn't have this feature.

the ps4 pro has 6 cores for games at 2.3 so it should score exactly like the amd x4 on your bench image, what is this zero copy thing? you still thin things go fronm system ram to vram all the time?
