What games have you found to have the dumbest of release dates?

I'll start:

The Switch versions of both Dragon Quest XI and Witcher III - Two ports of renowned RPG's from higher tech platforms, releasing the SAME month of 2019. Being that they are both RPG's that require a screw ton of time, I imagine Switch owners HAD to pick one (I bought both, but haven't started Geralt's third outing yet, while already hours into the Luminary's, which I need to get back too). Granted, CDP admits they were impressed with the Switcher's sales, but still... that game's release competed with a series that's basically a religion in it's own home nation of Japan (and the fact that the porting quality of DQ XI on Switch ended up being better overall).

And if I may mention a future release...

Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons - You cannot tell me with a straight face Animal Crossing has more hype than freaking DOOM! They both release the same day... and I hate to say it, but AC has some more problems before the game even launched.

What would you pick?

Releasing Titanfall 2 the same week as Call of Duty and Battlefield comes to mind.

Blur and Split/Second would have probably have sold better if they didn't come out within weeks of each other as well.

Kindoms of Amalur should never have released so close to Skyrim.

You know, I didn't start writing this just to hate on EA and Activision, but sometimes everything falls into place by accident.

When EA decided to release Titanfall 2 a week after Battlefield 1. Seriously how stupid was EA to release that game right next to their biggest fps franchise. It's like they wanted to cannibalize themselves.

@nintendoboy16: Why would you think that people are more hyped for a new Doom game?

Doom 2016 sold ~4 million copies.

Animal Crossing New Leaf sold ~12 million copies.

There's clearly a bigger market for Animal Crossing. That series is a beast.

Totally this and I'm super hype for Animal Crossing: New Horizon. I think Nintendoboy16 is referring to ACNH 1 Island per Switch but the fact is, this was always a thing in the series.

@judaspete: Blur and Split/Second did kind of create a confusion releasing so close together, I also think they picked a bad time, I think both released close to Red Dead Redemption and Mario Galaxy 2, not surprised both were neglected. Also, the year was already packed from the start, the first three months of 2010 were packed with other big releases since many publishers delayed release from holiday 2009 to early 2010, I presume because they didn't want to compete with COD... ironically they just ended up competing with themselves.

I was going to say Dragon Quest 11 on PS4 but the op made me realize the Switch release was worse. It’s like Square is doing it on purpose at this point...

Yeah that was a damn tragedy, because Titanfall 2 was better than both of those games.

DQXIS being close to Witcher 3 hurts it in west and it being too late into the market in Japan hurts it in Japan.

In North America DQXIS did not even appear on top 20 September or October NPD bestselling list and in Japan it did a quarter of PS4 first week. Witcher 3 didn't chart either so maybe long term both did well in english/non japanese language countries.

Not a fan of Rockstar's PC version release dates.
Not a fan of most japanese developers' PC version release dates.

That's just annoying though, not necessarily "dumb".

If there's any game that failed because of its' release date, I don't really care, since that hasn't happened to a game I care about (that I know of). Titanfall 2 release date was dumb, I suppose, but I don't care. Wasn't a problem for me, I played both BF1 and TF2. Stopped playing TF2, since it was basically just CoD with mechs and wallrunning. Better than CoD, but you still got tired of it fast. Pretty glad it didn't sell well. (if you come here again, Ghosts, and tell me that TF2's SP was amazing, I will strangle you).

DOOM Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons releasing the same day is seriously funny to me. I'm getting both of these. Gonna have some weird dreams going to bed after those gaming sessions..

I thought it was dumber on CD Projekt's side (Witcher III) than Square Enix, personally.

Final Fantasy IX (PS1). It released a month or two after the release of Playstation 2 in NA so it was kind of drowned-out. A shame at the time because it's an amazing game that people missed out on. It's more notable now since it's been remastered and ported over to other platforms. Final Fantasy IX (PS1) sold considerably less, but still a success, compared to Final Fantasy VII (PS1) and Final Fantasy VIII (PS1). I'm not saying that the release date is the sole reason why it sold less, but I'm sure it didn't help.

Animal Crossing and Doom releasing on the same day is the best thing to happen this year release date-wise.

If anything the memes surrounding the fact that two amazing looking polar opposites releasing on the same day has lead to a lot of meme related publicity. It is free marketing for both id and Nintendo.

Back when no one got that Metroid Prime wasn't an FPS, but an FPA (and not even the first of it's kind either, just more popular). :P
