Not many spring to my mind, since for example I loved Metroid Prime 1 on my GameCube, but I'd most definetly say that Castlevania is one prominent franchise that is definetly better off in 2D (I'm currently playing Lords of Shadow 1).

What do you say?

None.2D is a relic of the past.

Only lazy indie devs make 2d games now.

@ghostwarrior786: that's my point! The new Kombat proves that 2d is the best way to do it. Those gen 6 3d mks were rubbish.

Generally, platformers and fighting games are better in 2D. All other genres are better in 3D.

At the top of my head, Streets of Rage (based off the conceptual footage released), Street Fighter, Mega Man, and Castlevania.

Sonic works great in 3D btw. Adventure, Unleashed, Colors, and Generations are all fantastic games.

Donkey Kong (country)

Donkey Kong 64 just wasn't as good as the DKC games, eventhough it was made by Rare Gods.

Sonic fo sho.

Adventure games were shoddy, 06 was embarrassing, Unleashed was better but still awful, and Colors (and I presume Generations) was great.

In contrast, all the classic Sonics were amazing.

I actually prefered Mortal Kombat 4's 3D Style...... It was basically Tekken with Projectiles.

Sonic, Mega Man, Castlevania, Bomberman, Rayman, Earthworm Jim, Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter. And two ver personal choices: Mario and Metroid. They had a fairly smooth transition from 2D to 3D and they actually benefited from it in some ways, but I like their 2D games better.

I would say sonic but sonic is almost always constantly shit anyways. I prefer 2D metroids. But the 3D ones are still fantastic and I wouldn't want them to not have been made. Castlevania should only be in 2D. Fighters are best in a 2D plane the 2.5D art doesn't borhter me though.

Wow, Metroid Prime was the best Metroid ever. I normally agree that 2d > 3d for Nintendo franchises, but Metroid...no way!

I too am curious. Just a preference, or did you dislike the prime games?

I loved the prime games. The first was fantastic. The second was good, and I have not yet finished the third, but it is a damned good game so far.

I have played the first and thought it was fantastic. I haven't gotten very far into the second yet.

While I think the first two sonic games are great, I also believe that Sonic may be the one platformer that can actually benefit from 3d. There hasn't been a great one yet, but the 2d sonic games with their speed often led to 'wall hitting syndrome' and other ways to cut speed. The problem is that it just hasn't been done right but doing 3d to open up the perspective a bit could work. Or take on a more racing game viewpoint--How about dual joystick control for sonic?

Anyways, any game that doesn't need to be 3d, like Bomberman, which plays on a 2d field.

I just wanted to mention a game that did 2d to 3d right. ROAD RASH 64. Played that not long ago and has got to be the most underrated game of that gen. WHY IS THERE NO MORE ROAD RASH!?

@Lulu_Lulu: I cant agree with Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2013 is one my favorite games of all time.

I think the TC was referring more to games that don't really work in 3D, but are classic 2D.

Altered Beast

CastleVania

Sonic

Pacman

There prime examples

All those games worked just fine in 3D not just normal video games but as part of their own formulas. Lords Of Shadow was still a Metroidvania type game.

As for my girl Lara..... Well I wish Tomb Raider had more puzzeles.

@thehig1: Agree greatly with three of your choices but there has never been a single Altered Beast game that was any good, at least on consoles. I've played a lot of them at one time or another starting with the Spectrum version and moving on to Master System and Mega Drive and they are terrible.

Castlevania. Done in 2D hand-drawn style, up to the standards of Rayman Legends (just in terms of quality and animations). No, the DS or 3DS games don't count.

Actually since the category those games defined, were "metroidvania". I guess we can include Metroid and Castlevania both. 2D games look fantastic in 1080p, would be sweet if they "rebooted" those original games with 2D style with highest quality animations in 1080p.

Metriod. I liked prime don't get me wrong, but the 2d ones always hold a special something. I can't explain it really.
