My favorite would be the Xbox 360 controller but the sturdiness cannot be compared to the GC controller. It's literally a rock. This thing is the controller equivalent of a mechanical keyboard. When you push the shoulder buttons you REALLY feel it. Every button press feels solid and responsive. Aside from the slightly awkward buttons position, this thing is freakin amazing.

Craps on on any Sony controller. There's a reason smash enthusiasts still wanna use it. Nothing else can resist the onslaught of a good session of SSBM/B/Wii U button mashing.

Joystick axis check

Responsive buttons check

Solid as F check

Overall dope design check

Not a wonder for fps but then again, what kinda serious gamer plays shooters without M+KB?

Nah, the Wii/Wii U pro controller was better....GC controller was bad imo, weird shape Y & X buttons - uncomfortable & the tiny useless dpad button...the only like is the L & R analog trigger buttons. :P

X1 an and 360 have the best controller by far. Gamcube was always a fine one , better than the tiny dualshock 2s in that gen , but always seemed a little weird. Feel and button placement seems off.

@Crypt_mx: But they don't hold a candle to the GC controller in terms of sturdiness. You can grind the xbox controllers to dust with button mashers.

@Juub1990: GC controllers are sturdy, Ill give em that. But I haven't had trouble with any of my X1 or 360 controllers personally and I've been gaming for years. The only one I had go out on me was a first gen 360 controller that I abused as a kid lol

You've been luckier than I and my brother. I've owned about 8 Xbox 360 controllers since 2005 and 3 of them had issues. Halo Reach controller's D-pad just stopped responding one day. Another controller simply died(no battery would work) and another one had problems with the dead zone of the left thumbstick. I don't know if wired controllers are inherently better because I've had two of them for over 10 years and they are still working flawlessly to this day.

My brother gave up on them altogether.

I also treat my controllers well and never abused any of them.

sure was comfy but like others mentioned, it needed more time to refine the c stick. Would be cool if a refined GC controller came back for the NX.

I just can't believe it when ever I see this statement being made. The diamond layout of the face buttons is frequently implemented in most controllers (across generations) for good reason; it remains the tried and true design that's intuitive to navigate and easy to input by reflex. Whereas the offset positioning of the buttons on the GC controller offer no advantage and presents a more awkward user interface.

And of all the gamepads, it has the worst analog sticks; neither being clickable for the added input functionality found on most contemporary controllers (from gen 6 onwards) and that horrid right side "nubby" thing that's a lame excuse for an analog stick. Overall form factor is nice enough but the analog sticks are the real deal breaker.

It's always been at the bottom of the stack for me. Down in that zone with the OG boat Xbox and Dreamcast controllers.

I liked it for Mario Kart, that's about it.

Compared to its contemporaries, it was missing a shoulder button, no pressure sensitive buttons, no L3 or R3, and that C-stick was just hilariously bad. It was just sorely lacking in functionality by comparison.

I kind of liked the overall form factor, that's about it.

Aside from the lack of pressure sensitive analog sticks and additional shoulder buttons, I also think it's a great controller. I was absolutely confused at first as to how the controller could even be used but once I got used to it, I really liked it.

I liked it at the time but modern controllers are better. The Xbone controller is pretty much perfect, though it does have some weird bumpers and a questionable d-pad.

The gamecube controller:

  • Has some nice triggers
  • But only has one shoulder button
  • Colorful face buttons
  • whacky c-stick
  • only one rumble motor, compared to two and four in today's controllers
  • d-pad is way too small

I would say it's a pretty whacky controller, but then again it came after the N64 controller which looks absolutely nuts !

I liked it at the time. For some reason, the odd layout worked out pretty well for me. The nipple (C-stick) needed some work though, and an extra shoulder button on the left wouldn't have hurt.

One of the worst controllers for me was the N64 controller. Holy shit man, till this day,... I still don't know how to properly hold that thing...

It's seriously not a good controller. People like it because Nintendo designed their games around its limitations. Every other game felt terrible on it.

Try playing Jedi Outcast on that thing. It feels like total shit.

I hated to even try and play my N64 or GC because of the horrible controllers..Eventually sold them out of my collection all together..I cant fathom how popular the GC controller actually is. I guess those people have a feeling for clunky, odd sized, buttons with strange layouts..NIN cant seem to get it right for me. The Wiimote is only fun with the goofy sports games to me..so they failed there too..I'll NEVER buy another NIN console until they learn to follow some order like the other 2 do..Sometimes you have to put "innovation" aside for actual real every day use.

The Xbox controllers are the overall best, but I liked the Gamecube controller as well (despite a few flaws that it had) and there are some games like Smash Bros and Super Monkey Ball that I can't play with anything other than a Gamecube controller.

I'd be in support of all Nintendo consoles going forward using a redesigned Gamecube controller with a larger d-pad, a real analog stick in place of the C-stick, and a second Z button added.

Well, there's your problem: Jedi Outcast was a game BUILT for PC (wouldn't be the first one for the DF/JK series considering Dark Forces was really bad on PS1, but great on PC).

Just because you found ONE third party game that played like ass on a GameCube controller, doesn't mean all of them did. I guess by that logic, like I was telling @Bread_or_Decide in another thread: I must have dreamed when games like Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II - Rogue Leader (a third party GameCube game that remained exclusive), TimeSplitters 2, 007: Nightfire (which sure as hell played better than Agent Under Fire), and Prince of Persia played well with the GameCube controller. Hell, you must think F-Zero GX must play like crap, considering that was developed BY SEGA/Amusement Vision, despite Nintendo publishing.

It wasn't even the best of the 6th gen.

The PS4 and Xbox One have the best controllers of all time. I personally think the Xbox One's is the best, but the PS4's is damn close.

PS 3 Dual Shock 3 is the correct answer , you can play any PC games requiring Controllers, PS/ PSP / PS 2 or PS 3 Emaluators just great. Its even better than Xbox 360 wired for PC.

I definitely don't think it's the best. The analog triggers are cumbersome for games that require direct input, the z button is awkwardly placed(at least for myself), and I've had the B button get mushy on more than one of the pads I own. The last thing is the c-stick. An identical analog should have been used. For immediate camera changes the digital buttons on the 64/pad are better since they don't require anything more than a quick press.

Still a great controller and solidly built. I'd really like controllers to using gates around the analog sticks, again.

Whenever a thread like this pops up I like to mention the Hori Sport controller for ps3 because nobody does. All the buttons are great, has 4 digital shoulder inputs, two gated sticks, onboard range control for these sticks, a switch wheel under the side of the controller, and lastly there's another trigger underneath the right side. AND, the dpad is great.

For a PC gamer this is a must own imo.

Come to think of it, why didn't TVTropes add the PS2 and XBOX versions of Super Monkey Ball on the Porting Disaster page? Everything I've read about that game pretty much said it did not translate well from the GameCube controller to the DualShock 2 and XBOX controllers. I first heard of that from Joe Redfer, the admitted SEGA fanboy on GameSack when he and Dave were looking at the GameCube and another episode (but I'm not sure which), hell I even talked with Redfer about it in the comments.

The xbox one is the best controller so far. The GC controller was alright still did not like the idea of the c-stick. Just seemed weird to be honest.
