Qualcomm has once again shown their extensive lead in mobile graphics with the Snapdragon 845. The Galaxy S9 (Qualcomm version) was one of the first devices to launch with the Snapdragon 845 and has scored exceptionally high in 3D mobile benchmarks.

This type of performance will allow gamers, who plan on using their mobile devices for more graphically intensive games, to run titles at their highest settings while maintaining smooth performance. Some of these games include: PUBG Mobile, ARK: Survival Evolved, Shadowgun Legends, Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition and Fortnite.

No one said flagship mobile phones are cheap.

You're also quoting Canadian pricing, which isn't even that high. Freedom Mobile, for example, has the Galaxy S9 for $0 on a $480 tab ($20 CAD per month for 24 months) on a $50 CAD per month plan ($37.50 per month if you get the 25% off promotion).

I'm curious to see if Google is planning to use more of their own silicon in a Pixel 3. The Pixel 2 used the Snapdragon 835 and Google's own Pixel Visual Core, capable of 3 TOPS.

I suspect they're still going to use the Snapdragon 845, or perhaps a Snapdragon 846 (slightly improved clocks), if available.

@NVIDIATI: there were rumors of them using an 836 but it got squashed. Only problem with the pixel is it gets released so late in the year that by the time Feb comes around its already out of date. I still love my pixel 2 xl either way

I think that was primarily due to some difficulties causing a delay in the timeline for the Snapdragon 835.

Yes, that is a downside to the Pixel, and next year Qualcomm should be moving to a 7 nm process and potentially utilizing ARM's upcoming big core (or at least a variant of it).

If you care about mobile gaming, the progression of mobile graphics and the dominant players, then it might be something of interest.

It's very clear that the gaming industry is taking mobile gaming far more seriously now than it has in the past.

it would be interesting to see what could be done with such a chip in a proper gaming device. developers managed to get some great results out of the vita. even now seeing games like killzone merc and wipeout on a handheld is pretty darn cool. by todays standard the vita is also vastly out of date in terms of mobile hardware.

i wonder if nintendo would have been better off going to mobile tech route also with a modified snapdragon or something similar. reduce the core count and clock, beef up the GPU and remove things like the modem (it wouldnt have been an 845 of course). though i suppose from nintendos perspective it was the tools as much as the tech that they were after and nvidia have experience with to the metal development tools.

its interesting to see though. just a shame that such interesting hardware is put in such dull devices.

Given the Snapdragon's efficiency, it would make for an interesting gaming device.

Unfortunately, mobile developers don't usually create games for the latest hardware. It will likely be a couple of years before we see most games being able to utilize a chip like the Snapdragon 845 to its fuller potential.

The exception in the near-term might be ARCore apps which seem to be designed for phones with at bare-minimum a Snapdragon 821. Although, the majority of supported devices use a Snapdragon 835.

Casually game on my S6 from time to time. Never seriously played a console-type game on it. 8 Ball Pool and Top Eleven mostly.

I just bought the S9 from T-Mobile, I traded in my iPhone 6s which they gave me $360 credit towards the S9. I paid a down-payment and financed the rest on my monthly phone bill which was just a few dollars. The phone didn't cost me $1,000 nor do I pay $100 in monthly plans. My monthly plan is $63 a month for unlimited everything. I'm located in West Palm Beach, FL.

I just got the S9 Plus myself with the same promotion. I traded in my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and got $360 credit towards the S9 Plus. I am loving my new phone, it is really great.

I have not gamed on my cell in the past but now I am actually going to get into it. Today I saw a video of the best RPGs on mobile and a few caught my eye. One I had never heard of called Crashlands seems very interesting. I was tempted to pick up PUBG which is free. I am very tempted to pick up KOTOR but I don't like that it is a 2GB install. Maybe I will just get over that and do it because that is one of my favorite games of all time.

PUBG and Fortnite are on phones and those are 2 of the biggest games out. And the mobile versions run better than the Xbox One versions.

I'm not so sure about that last part, I mean, for starters, PUBG Mobile is a different game than PUBG on PC or console. Unlike Fortnite, they removed a lot of complexity from the environment.

Fortnite is the same game, but it has a lot of graphical effects turned off or toned down. As Fortnite hasn't launched yet on Android, the best phone that can run it is currently the iPhone X/iPhone 8 Plus. In the case of the iPhone X, Fortnite is running at 30 fps with a resolution around 1460x660.

'Mobile gaming' is good for Pacman and Tetris. That's it.
