@pyro1245:
I thought The Last of Us had solid game-play. Maybe the difference in kind could use a bit of work; the puzzle sections (water crossing, ladder moving) could use some work but overall the main body of the game-play was good.
If I would like to see some improvements; I would make enemy AI less predictable and make the level design more involved. The human AI followed a pattern of:
1. Stealth kill one enemy
2. Another will casually drift in the direction of his downed buddy
3. Stealth kill that enemy...
4. Eventually you have a pile of bodies in one place.
The only exception to this rule were areas with more vertical environments like the hotel level.
The game-play sort of starts and ends the same way with challenges largely passable using the same tactics and I think maybe more involved levels might help to mix things up. I thought that when they introduced a stage with waist high water, that would be a perfect player trap for an infected challenge but that never happened. Or a stage where the infected and bandits were in the same place. Directing a clicker using bricks/bottles to take out a bandit would have made for a fun little way for players to experiment with the mechanics.
The overall design was a little safe compared to its peers from a game-play and design standpoint but I think it's a fun game with excellent game feel. I mean you seriously feel every punch you deliver and bullet you take.
The Last of Us set the foundation for excellent potential. I hope Naughty Dog go full on :)
