As far as franchises go, I never played Dragon Quest games. But after playing Dragon Quest 11S, I am now on the Dragon Quest fan bus lol. Don't know if previous games play like this, but this game is one of my favorite RPGs and I look forward to the next one. Another franchise I can think of is God of War. Though I was a fan before, this reboot renergized my enthusiam for it after the series was starting to get stale.

How about you, SW? What franchises did you become a fan of this generation?

Monster Hunter. I seem to very vaguely recall having tried it on the PS2 but it may have just been a demo or something. I picked up Tri on the Wii but again played very little. Picked up Monster Hunter World on the Xbox One and was completely hooked on it. Have spent well over 1,000 hours on it and Iceborne.

Monster Hunter. I knew i'd be all over it, but Capcom was too dumb to release it on proper systems. Now that the series is not being held back by Nintendo, i can finally enjoy the series.

Doom. All the previous ones to Doom2016 were meh. Maybe the original was amazing for its time, but i played it much later and it wasn't anything great. Doom 64 was fine, but nothing great. Doom 3 was trash. If it wasn't for Doom2016, i wouldn't care much about the series.

Xcom turned based combat got me into Divity as well.

If I had to pick one on top of head I'd say Witcher. I've owned all Witcher games on PC but 3 is the first one I've actually enjoyed (and how!) and against all odds it turned me into a fan of the franchise and of the dev.

@SolidGame_basic: You might want to try some of the older DQ fan favourites. I would recommend DQV and DQVIII.

Doom Eternal is starting to get discounted. Might have to pick it up soon. CD keys has it for $38 already.

+1 for Monster Hunter

MHW was my first game in the series and I really enjoyed it + the Iceborn expansion.

I guess i'll say Wolfenstein and Doom as well since I never got into the old iterations of those series.

The Forza Horizon series. I missed 1 & 2 during the 360 days so I discovered the franchise on its 3rd iteration and it quickly became my favourite franchise of the generation. 3 stands out as the best of the franchise as even the DLCs were excellent. Blizzard Mountain perfecting show driving and Hot Wheels was refreshingly fun.

Halo 5 comes in as second as it’s multiplayer is stellar with Breakout being its most innovative mode.

DQ11 was the first DQ I've played, and while it wasn't the best, being cliché and slow at parts (standard JRPG stuff) I could consider myself a fan. I really like the artstyle, and the gameplay was solid, albeit too easy perhaps? Some amusing characters.

Would love to try out the first Ni No Kuni as well, been waiting for a good price for the remaster.

Dark Souls. I was introduced to the series last gen, but found it too stressful to enjoy. Played it again in 2017 and it "clicked" with me. Simple, but engaging combat. Terrific pacing and encounter design, with just a pinch of Metroid style world design. Delicious! Finished it, Bloodborne, and later Dark Souls 3.

Resident Evil. Prior to RE2: remake I did not care for RE franchise at all. I bought RE5 for the co-op but never finished it with my mates.

I absolutely loved RE2, and will get RE3 on sale. (because its short and not as highly rated neither the original nor the remake). RE4 remake I will get day 1. I'll probably buy RE8 if it gets good scores like RE7 and doesn't bomb like RE6 did.

@fileman3: Dude Monster Hunter World is the worst game I've ever played. Honestly, it's a 2/10. my friend and I bought it and the Iceborne expansion (still pretty expensive at €40) and holy shit we have never been so dissatisfied with a product before. It's a cluster **** of a game with poor gameplay, boring combat, terrible voice acting, bad story, PS3-esque graphics (it looks last gen AF) and worst of all it's impossible to play co-op. Even if they actually made it a decent game like Dauntless, it's the same thing over and over and over again.

We even forced ourselves to play it for 10 hours because "it must get good at some point" - No.

It does not.

@Archangel3371: 1000 hours on the worst game ever made? How?

I wish I could go to Japan and knock on the developers door and smack him for making such a bad game.

my friend and I wasted 10 hours trying to figure how to launch quests together and do the whole thing as 2 player co-op, we couldn't respond to each others flares or launch quests as a party until we did half the damn hunt solo. Got sick after one hunt but forced ourselves to do 40 more shitty hunts

We agreed from the first 20 minutes if we don't hold out for at least 10 hours the first one to say 'I quit'. has to refund the other person's €40 spent on the game. I almost considered just paying my way out.

@Mozelleple112: my thoughts exactly. I’m trying to understand why it has such a huge following and I love RPGs

But it’s just so clunky to play. Getting a million new items that I have no idea what to even do with them. Bad story and piss poor combat. I just don’t get this game lol.

I have played just about every game in a franchise to this point so this is a tough question since I can't put a game that is sure to have a sequel but doesn't to this point.. lol. On that note I guess I'll say Rocket League since I didn't care much for Rocket Powered Supersonic whatever the hell.. heh. Not so sure that counts though since they are all but unrelated.

Only Fire Emblem through its mobile game Fire Emblem Heroes and the Switch game Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

Too bad that Three Houses is not selling as well as I thought (three million copies worldwide according to Nintendo).

Can it be said for any game and any genre? For some gamers, either they like a game or they dislike it.

It is a matter of gaming taste and we should not expect any game to appeal to everyone. A game trying to appeal to everyone will turn out to appeal to no one.

Whoa.. That's a lot of things you didn't check before getting the game.

It's a game where you over and over again beat the shit out of dinosaurs with different weapons. All weapons are very different to each other. It's very grindy. It's not impossible to play co-op, you just didn't understand how. Story is absolutely terrible, indeed. Luckily you don't have to give a shit since the game is fun. PS3-esque graphics? On shit hardware, yeah probably. Looks awesome on my PC. Boring combat? Oh, you misspelled "amazing combat".

Weird complaints, man.

Your thinking that the type of video games you play has anything to do with masculinity is what makes you insecure. You're a textbook case of over compensation.

@Litchie: Well they could have made it way easier. It took us about three minutes to hook up Diablo 3 together, and Dauntless a minute or two. In Monster Hunter we spent 10 hours playing trying to figure out how to respond to eachothers flares and joining a quest FROM THE BEGINING until THE END. Garbage game.

Edit:

I had to check if it was just us that were stupid, or the game that was broken. Indeed it is the game that is broken

alot of the main missions have cutscenes. All players have to have seen it before they can join your quest.

After doing a mission you will be always separated. You will stay in the same lobby. Every player has to start the new mission on their own and watch the cutscene.

You always split up and return to your own Astera after every quest. If a quest has multiple cutscenes (which a few do) you have to see them all before anyone else can join you. So if there's some sort of fight between the two, you will be forced to solo it.

What kind of crap is that? We paid to play together, not spend 15-20 mins doing solo shit before/during/after quests.
