Apparently these days, 5 year olds play Gears of War, which I think is wrong in so many ways, but I thought back to the first experience I had with a very violent game (Mortal Kombat) and maybe it depends on the kid but I didn't really think it was that big a deal.

What were some of you guys' first experiences with violent videogames, and would you ever let your kids play them underaged?

Manhunt.

I don't consider any of the games you listed exceedingly violent.

Manhunt was just disguisting and vulgar.

Which ever came out first between Mortal Kombat or Doom. I don't remember but I played them both near their time of launch.

It was on Sega Genesis. I cant remember the name but you were like a wizard dude. You walked around in third person and very violently and graphically killed imps and trolls and the like. You could literally see the intestines and internal organs when you disemboweled your foes. Was extremely graphic. Oh yea, and doom.

Killer Instinct was the first game I played that had a good deal of blood in it, but Narc (for the NES) was the first really gorey game I played, I was 11. The first Mature rated game that I actually bought was Max Payne, I was 13.

All in all, I didn't really gravitate to the violent content, and I still don't. My collection is full of E and T rated games, and most of my M rated games are still pretty tasteful when compared to stuff like GTA and Manhunt...

DOOM was my first and the most recent has to be GTA III. I tend to not play a lot of the heavier violent or controversial games because I don't like then a whole lot and generally don't think they're that good for me. I think I'll keep tabs on what I let my children play just like I watch what I let myself and younger siblings play.

I've played Wolfenstein and Doom but I don't consider them exceedingly violent or controversial...

Really the first controversial game I played was Duke Nukem 3D! Yeah baby! Throw money at some hookers to show me them pixelated knockers, hell yeah!

I guess Mortal Kombat or Duke Nukem 3D. The only game that actually shocked me was Conkers Bad Fur Day. It was the day I realized the real shock value of video games...Of course CBFD is tame by today's standards.

Carmageddon 2!

This is the only game I felt guilty and physically sick after playing. MK, Doom, Postal...etc. were candyland.

I didn't consider the first Mortal Kombat or it's successors extremely violent/controversial; if any thing it made violence funny.

I used to play 007: Golden Eye with the big head cheat on and my parents thought that was exceedingly violent so they took it away -.-. But the first truly gory violent game i played was either the original Unreal, or some snes game, i forget what it was.
