A number of MMOs have significantly improved after launch. This is very, very true, but the things wrong with FFXIV, they would have to re-think their entire strategy. Everything is wrong, bartering, questing, repetetive enviornments, only like 5 areas in the whole game. I know they said the UI is being re-created entirely, so its good they know some things need to be trashed and re-done, but its going to take a ton of development time to fix something like the questing system, which is the worst of any pay MMO, I know its been free, but you know what I mean. There is also the whole, switching classes, I thought it would be awesome, and it kind of is, but everyone ends up with the same set of skills in the end, a party isn't 5 or more people working together, its 5 people who need exp and need each other's help to kill a monster, in FFXI you needed balanced parties of nukers, healer, buffer, DDs, etc. Here everyone can heal themselves anyways. I wanted to be a tank because I love the role, but gladiator is a ****ing useless class, the shield stuff is not consistent, and you're super squishy, very easy to die. You can set your own stats, but VIT for HP and MND for MP are the only 2 noticeable ones, people rarely notice increases in strength for attack or accuracy, now they did fix the accuracy, but the stats are still useless. Stuff like this, they'd have to re-work a huge chunk of the game.
I say they take the whole thing offline for a few months, make stuff work, and do a re-launch, hoping to save some face.
