FIFA 12 becomes fastest-selling game of 2011, sets industry record

Just last week we reported that Gears of War 3 was the fastest-selling game of 2011 in its first week of release. Just six days later, there's a new record-holder in the market — and it's a worldwide hit.

As many predicted, the latest installment of Electronic Arts' soccer (ahem, football) franchise, FIFA 12, has supplanted Gears of War 3 as the highest-selling game of 2011 in its first week of release. Selling over 3.2 million units between September 27 and October 2, the game also set a record for the highest first-week sales of any sports game ever made.

"FIFA 12 is a stunning achievement by our team at EA Canada," said Andrew Wilson, Executive Vice-President of EA Sports in an official statement. "The massive FIFA online community has overwhelmingly connected to the new live services in the game, including EA SPORTS Football Club, and we intend to keep them engaged all season long as FIFA 12 follows the heartbeat of the football season."

In its statement about the FIFA 12 launch, EA also noted that the latest installment's sales are up 23 percent over FIFA 11, and that FIFA 12 for the iPhone and iPad has sold 879,000 units so far. The statement goes on to report that October 1 also set a record for online gaming with EA Sports titles, as more than 10 million players competed in EA Sports sessions (including nearly eight million FIFA 12 matches).

A sports game beat gears of War 3?

Now if only this game would have released when MW3 came out. See this is proof that Fifa 12 has some sort of magical powers or something. A Fifa has never sold this fast or anywhere near for a very long time.

That´s pretty great,it´s the biggest and most important sport in the world so it´s not that surprising to be honest.

But I wasn´t expecting it to beat Gears 3 lol.

FIFA is multiplat and has a far wider appeal than GeOW. It makes plenty of sense, especially with the acclaim it was getting before release.

In Europe there are many who get a console, PS3 usually just for football. It's like those CoD players in USA. They don't know/care that other games exist.

That said, this is amazing news. FIFA has been the best football game since FIFA09 and has been improving each year. FIFA12 is probably the greatest improvement of them all.

not shocking. between soccer's popularty globally and the fact that it's multiplat and scored a 9.5, i don't see why everyone is shocked. makes perfect sense to me.

Good to hear, its an amazing sports game.

Its the most fun of any Fifa game and they improved the defense so much! I always thought Fifa games didnt do defense well enough but this year they nailed it perfect.

I've been addicted to it. Was afraid I'd do poorly in my mid-semester exams because of it, I've spent so much time with Ultimate Team, which I barely knew about and never touched in FIFA 11. Honestly, I prefer FIFA 11 gameplay wise so far. I might get used to the new things, but certain things like the rag-doll physics need to go.

I bought Gears of War 3 two days before FIFA 12, but I've still spent the majority of my time with FIFA 12 despite Gears 3 being amazing. With that said, I haven't even touched Horde or Beast mode yet, and Horde was something that I played regularly even more than a year after Gears 2 was released.
