FFXIV will require two subscriptions and a purchase on Xbox

I'm not sure why it's this way on Xbox, but you'll have to have a subscription to Game Pass Core to play FFXIV online in addition to the FFXIV subscription and game purchase.

The Free Trial version, including the open beta test, will not require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play. However, the full Xbox Series X|S version will require an Xbox Game Pass (Core or Ultimate) plan to play.

Xbox online policy is dumb and has forever been dumb. It is very akin to the 360 days which people praised to hell and back. This policy that console gamers have accepted in which the people who pay for games are charged to play online and the people who don't pay for games, play for free.😂

Any type of game that requires a subscription is automatic no from me. PS or Xbox.

Not that I would ever play stuff like this, but do you have to subscribe to FF once you’ve bought it? Do….people do that?

I find it more egregious a publisher requires you to pay a monthly subscription to play their game in any capacity, and yet still charges you to buy the game and expansions on top of that. Feign outrage about that.

Just to add perspective, you can sub to either Gamepass or PS+ and get games monthly for the cost of subbing to this game. This doesn't even include the initial cost of purchasing the game.

They should allow people to play it without having to subscribe to GamePass Core/Ultimate. Not an issue for me though since I’m already subscribed to Ultimate for all its other benefits.

Been playing FFXIV for a long ass time and honestly its a non issue for most user. On PS even though you don't need PS+ to play FFXIV, many people do cause they play other games.

Tho it is a very specific issue for those looking into buying the last gen Xbox Series S (or X) solely for FFXIV. you have to sub to the cheapest Gamepass tier as well as buying the game (yes you have to pay for starter edition + expansion) and monthly sub. Either sub to the cheapest tier of Gamepass or get a PS5 digital edition to save money on subscriptions in long run (and better visual quality than Series S).

I've never even heard of "Game Pass Core".

I don't like it but I'm not exactly shocked. Considering hordes of people have spent the last decade essentially doing the same thing for Destiny/Destiny 2 it just seems like par for the course when it comes to these sort of forever games in the console space.

You have to pay for PS+ to play online games on playstation as well, nothing new under the sun.

@spelamera: you do not need PS+ for FFXIV on PS but you do have to sub to gamepass on top of FFXIV subscription for xbox.

I know, what i said was you need PS+ to play online games on playstation. Why Sony make a free pass from that rule on just this game i dont know.

It's the analog to "Xbox Live Gold", Gold doesn't exist anymore and it has been rebranded and changed up a bit. Instead of monthly games there is a sub-category of "over 25" games from Game Pass. Link

I believe on PS you can play up to level 70 without a monthly fee? I am not sure if this is still the case, and maybe this will be available on Xbox too.

Paying for online multiplayer will forever be a scam, however you slice it. At $60 a year (PS+ is $80 now I think), that's almost $200 you have had to pay already since the console gen started 3 years ago before the $20 price hike.

It's insane. And people just went "oh, ok. here's my moneys". Considering how easy that was, since then game companies have put up hundreds of other paywalls, and people again went "cool, take my money".

And now we have to pay game companies 25 dollars if we want a new color for our in-game hat.

I don't mind paying a monthly sub for a great mmo like FFXIV, but I simply lost interest over time. Perhaps I'll sub for a couple/few months again at some point, but I'm more interested in other MMOs at this point like ESOs Gold Road, Ashes of Creation, Throne and Liberrty, and Blue Protocol right now.
