FF8 Remaster is a complete disaster...

Essentially, this release boils down to the equivalent of a modded PC version. Updated character models are great, but backgrounds are incredibly blurry and FMVs remain untouched which means they're pixelated as all hell. Running on a 4K TV? Who cares? It looks garbage.

A port which is basically the same as the first release, with updated models (they do look decent.)

SE need a break.

Gamers need to know this is a remastered PS1 game not a remake. The main complaints I'm seeing are all about the graphics. It's almost as if Square-Enix no longer has the original source code or something and they did their best by injecting custom character models and UI wraps into the software.

To be honest however, this remaster is completely unnecessary when the original is still perfectly playable in my opinion. and to make matters worst, the remaster is censored! And that is something people are having a hard time accepting these days. (remember the Ion Fury fiasco?)

Square never promised nothing more then some cheats and new character models. Anyone expecting widescreen and framerates increases are in for a world of pain as this was stated weeks ago they would not be there. But I can see why people are pissed and can't say I blame'em. It's better to just to mod the 2013 Steam version and I own the 2013 version anyways.

As you know (or may have forgotten our FF8 conversations) 8 is my favourite FF, and if they half half arsed the "remaster" then it's makes me sad :(

Yeah, this is a disaster. SE half-ass all their "remasters," and gamers get the shit end of the stick. The characters look pretty damn good, but I don't think anything was updated beyond that. Mods on FF9 and 7 at least allow you to adjust fps in battle/real-time and the "AI" enhanced backgrounds look phenomenal.

@davillain-: I would excuse it, but we saw the same with 7 and 9. If it's broken, then don't charge people. If it were another product that barely works as intended, i'd have a hard time selling it to a customer. "Sorry sir, your shitter doesn't actually have an exit hole for connections to sewage... Never mind, eh?"

At the end of the day, they are barely catching up to the modding scene, and in some cases are being blasted out of the water. I only showed FF9, but FF8 has some serious mod enhancements in the works. It's looking more like SE tried to squeeze a release, before the "AI"-enhanced mods upped the backgrounds to an acceptable level.

The original game was a complete disaster so no surprise the remaster is also.

The game was lackluster. It fell apart in the final act, and the junction system was also kinda lame. Other than that, it was really quite good.

Ah well there's another game I wont be buying this month unfortunately.

FF8 is the best in the series. It definitely deserves better than this. That being said, I love the game waaaay too much to not pick this up, even if it is just updated character models.

I'll probably still pick this up because I haven't played the game and don't want to be hearing the MIDI music on the current Steam version I own.

This is it, and it's an easy install. You just have to edit a few things in memoria.ini for widescreen and allowing the boosts from the original game. Literally changing some things from "0" to "1" to enable them.

The "AI" enhanced textures are glorious. They suffer in moving images, but backdrops are amazing.

Yeah I’ve been reading about this around the Internet and it sounds very disappointing indeed. Still though I really love this game and want this on my Xbox One to go with all the other Final Fantasy games I have on it. I’m still looking forward to playing through it again but I am disappointed that it wasn’t better.

For consoles, it's probably completely viable in terms of being a step-up.. It's just sad they've kept the issues from prior ports, as well as not bothering to update beyond what mods have already done. The "handsome Squall" meme, was already fixed in a mod.

I haven't read much into it but I think this was one of them that got much attention for censorship all because of the change for the Siren: FFVIII remastered censored

I wouldn't mind this if they were charging $5-7 for it. Basically just a slightly enhanced port of the PS1 game with some extra features/cheats and trophies/achievements if you want to go for completion. But to charge $19.99 for that laziness? GTFO. I'm not sure if Square is the laziest/worst with their remasters (though they probably are), hard to dispute them as the biggest ripoffs.

I really hope FF8 and 9 get remakes.

It's not great, but x3 speed and no encounters make this version my fav.

As someone whose favorite videogame ever is FF9, please don't. Just leave it be.

Yeah it certainly could have been better.

I never played the original PC version, but the world map terrain looks horrible. Worse than the PS1 version.

There's also a bug where sometimes the selection cursor hand will stay at the top of the screen, very faintly like it's flashing very fast. This right here is a deal breaker. I hope they will push some updates to fix this.

They also should have remapped L1 and R1 to the right stick left and right. It's not possible to do so in the options either.

Overall I regret buying it. I think the definitive version is still an up-scaled PS1 with a screen filter and xpadder to remap the controls as stated.

Oh. The load times are great. Waaaay better load times than the PS1 version.

FFX/X-2 Remaster & FFXII: The Zodiac Age are both great but yeah keep pushing the Square-Enix hate initiative like this isn't a PS1 game

Yeah, for sure. I hope we get something akin to the new mods soon, or at some point. It would help to greatly enhance the poor backgrounds. I'm shocked FF7 looked so good.

Square-Enix is NOT Squaresoft, unfortunately. Overall, its a really cheap modded port of the Steam version, with new character models + the original music pack instead of MIDI music (and sometime the game glitchs at a point it plays the MIDI version of a tune instead of the orignal PS1's.) Nothing more. I know they lost the source code, but some amateur modders can do so much better. Square-Enix is just another AAA studio who looks like is destined to have the same kind of fate as Activision, Bethesda and EA.

The only thing I really appreciate in this Remastered, is the 3X speed option.
