February 2021 NPD: PS5 Is Fastest Selling System in US History

Sony may be keeping things concerningly close to its chest, but make no mistake: the PlayStation 5 is a runaway freight train that’s going to be difficult to slow down. February’s NPD report, which tracks hardware and software sales in the United States, reveals that the next-gen PlayStation is now the fastest selling format in US history, based on dollar sales across its first four months on the market. Not bad for an appliance you can’t readily buy.

Despite the juggernaut status of the new console, it’s still getting beaten by the Nintendo Switch, which was once again the best-selling system of the month. It’s now exceeded the Nintendo DS in terms of lifetime dollar sales, which is a staggering statistic really. Spend across the entire industry continues to be strong as a result: February 2021 saw a 35 per cent bump year-over-year, with the industry as a whole tallying a record $4.6 billion.

Among the new releases, both Persona 5 Strikers and Little Nightmares 2 did much better than expected, securing third and sixth position respectively. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, perhaps refuelled by the PS5’s stock situation, continues to do well in fourth place as well. Meanwhile, the DualSense controller has retained its position as the industry’s most popular accessory – we’re really looking forward to all the different colours Sony will presumably introduce later in the year.

Both PS5 and Switch are selling very well. I'm glad that P5S (Persona 5 Strikers) made a strong debut in 3rd place. Little Nightmares 2 also seems to be selling well, which I'll play soon. Another win for Sony and Nintendo. Thought?

@Pedro: Well, in terms of the number of units, Switch or Wii might have sold faster, but NPD judges by the amount of money, so we should understand it as such.

Also PS4 version of Persona 5 Strikers carried the game to its high sales. Look at this awful Nintendo list, where them 3rd parties at? Eww those vocal minority port beggars dont even buy games on switch. 9 out of 10 is nintendo related and one uber casual ubisoft game. Blergh 3rd party is dead on Nintendo.

@sakaixx: lol. They obviously live in a bubble. Atlus/Sega has made its Switch version for Japan, and it sold well, but the Japanese market is also in a bubble, so the rules do not apply overseas. On the bright side, they have recently realized that the PC is important, so they may focus more on PC/PS5 in the Western market in the future.

Given the price difference, the switch is outselling the ps5 by 2 to 1? Remember how the new consoles were supposed to kill Switch?

@st_monica: all Persona Strikers performance in all regions shows Switch version of Persona Strikers sold low compared to PS ver including in Japan.

Based on dollar sales. Of course, the main one is selling for $499. The PS4 was selling for $399 and the Switch $299. Then consider inflation.

The difference is, Microsoft grew up and is now relaying their profits to investors each quarter by monthly active users and not the outdated yet traditional way of relaying only the number of systems sold. Microsoft is basing their success directly from software sold as a service (Game Pass subscribers), with their little plastic box only being one of many delivery methods for Game Pass.

Knowing the number of Xbox's sold is meaningless once you factor in the number of smart phones, PC's, etc also running Game Pass.

NPD - The PS5 is the 2nd fastest selling console in hardware units (only trailing #1 by less than 1%).

They are selling a great number of units.
