Alan Wake Remastered Developer Isn't Happy With Its Revenue

Alan Wake and Control developer, Remedy Entertainment, reports that Alan Wake Remastered did not bring in as much revenue as hoped.

Alan Wake Remastered appears to have not moved very many copies, according to developer Remedy Entertainment. The tenured studio has a fair few blockbuster releases under its belt, including the first two Max Payne games, Quantum Break, Control, and the Alan Wake titles themselves. But the company's latest release seems to have missed its mark for some reason.

Funded and published by Epic Games, the remaster of the first Alan Wake game came about after Remedy Entertainment delivered the critically acclaimed Control, which was quickly revealed to be narratively connected to Alan Wake. Epic is also funding the continued development of Alan Wake 2, which is supposed to bring all of Remedy's disparate franchises under the same umbrella and narratively bind them together into a cohesive whole.

The launch ofAlan Wake Remasteredwas presumably supposed to keep the studio running so that it could keep working on its more comprehensive modern projects in the interim, but the latest operational summary of the company plainly states that the game isn't selling well. This includes thesurprise launch of Alan Wake Remastered on Switch, too, it's worth pointing out. "Alan Wake RemasteredandCrossfiredid not generate royalties," says the document, which also referencesAlan Wake 2andCodename Condoras its main external development expenses.

After Remedy's CrossfireX campaigns were reviewed very poorly, it would appear that the studio couldn't secure any extra funding from the game's publisher, Smilegate. Regardless, Remedy makes it clear that the five games it currently has in active development aren't in danger of cancelation. The remakes of the first two Max Payne games are progressing nicely, as is Codename Condor, the Control spin-off that focuses on co-op multiplayer. The free-to-play Vanguard title is now in the proof-of-concept stage, and Alan Wake 2 is still slated for a 2023 release window.

With all the games Remedy is working on seemingly progressing well, one of the studio's concerns right now might be that Alan Wake Remastered simply isn't selling well. Still, the studio reports that its revenue grew by 6.8%, signaling that these issues aren't necessarily as problematic as they might seem at a glance. With all other projects progressing nominally, Remedy is likely to recuperate over the next couple of years.

Curiously, the new report also states that Remedy is looking at ways to boost its predictable revenue streams. While Alan Wake 2's story is certainly exciting in its own right, Remedy's Project Condor and Vanguard games are exciting for different reasons. Namely, they may end up implementing live-service elements to bolster the studio's earnings over a long period of time, increasing its profitability and publisher appeal if handled correctly.

Alan Wake Remastered is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

That's because Epic don't give a shit. AW2 will flop as well because they won't bother with advertising/publicity, not to mention that it will be EGS exclusive and won't get any sales on PC no matter what.

It's a weird remake because the original still looks great. I feel the same way about Dead Space.

Put it on Gamepass and I'll replay it, otherwise meh.

Yep.

If it's an old ass game from 1993 that's obscure and hard to get, maybe a shit OG port on PC (which itself is no excuse) get it.

Stuff like this? Blahhhhhhhhh

The one thing they definitely remastered here were the character models. Alan and Alice looked a lot better in this remake.

@R4gn4r0k: Honestly, still think this looks like shit.

Less to do with the tech and more just boring, bland character design. Their attempts at "le_mature" = porridge

How are they suprised by this.

The game was basically given away for free on every platform for over a year before they got the rights back again, and before that u could get a copy for cents for years.

The new remaster barely looks different and plays different from the original to the point why even bother buying it.

Honestly, if you want to make cash out of the game, should have rebuild it entirely from scratch.

AW2 is gonna be a dumpster fire if Control is anything to go by.

AW1 was amazing. Remedy took a dump from there.

Unfortunate. I picked it up on Xbox and really like it. Am pretty hyped for Alan Wake 2. Thought Control was excellent.

Well, in this particular case it's fine because they are funding the game entirely.

Alan Wake 2 is gonna have a random crate in some level that says "FBC" on it and another level with a random magazine that has Jesse Faden on the front cover. That will be the cohesive binding. Calling it now.

To me, the release seemed sudden and wasnt advertised.

Did they think it would sell a ton based on word of mouth?

Anecdotal, but I know a lot of people that didnt know the remaster existed since it was an Epic exclusive.

I bet it wouldve sold a ton on Steam day one since Steam likes to push new stuff down your throat lol

They should have bundled American Nightmare in it. Given the remaster more bang for its buck. Also while Alan Wake was a great game it lacks a certain replay value for its longer story driven moments in between, whereas American Nightmare is more nonstop action. I have a feeling people might show greater interest in it as the sequel approaches.

Nice to hear. Companies earning tons of cash from slightly touched up versions of old games is very lame. Games selling on EGS at all is also very lame.

Never even thought about AW2 being an EGS exclusive. Already didn't have much interest in the game, but if it's exclusive to EGS, I'll definitely never play it.

Its been publish by Epic so obviously iys EGS game. if it was not for epic funding we would never have AW2. gaming is not only revolved around steam.

@uninspiredcup: Also cup, Alan wake was only game that actually worth Xbox 360. i solely bought 360 for this game and it worth it. but sadly microsoft hated it and didnot promote it as much as thier flagship baby Gears and Halo.

of course mainstream audience and masses who used to play Halo and Gears wouldnot interested in deep storytelling atmospheric masterpiece that was Alan wake 1.

Sad for the developers behind Alan Wake, especially because the negative reception sales wise isn't' going to change the industry making more and more rereleases or "HD" remasters. Alan Wake seems like a cult classic, nothing more. I have zero interest in it, and it appears not many others do either, if this statement is anything to go by,

@ghosts4ever: You are correct my freind. Halo and Gears Of War fans are deeply uncultured.

They do not covet quality, merely tarnish it with incredulous mimicry propagated by media under Microsofts thumb.

Alan Wake is boring though.

Yup.

PC is not about exclusivity; save that shit for petty ass consoles.

Proud of my PC brethren for not falling prey to these tactics and voting with their wallet; Remedy will hopefully learn from this at some point, though it appears they did not with AW Remake and AW2 this time.

No, they are the worst for holding it hostage in a single storefront.

Should be on GoG, Steam, etc.

Also, think forward: if AW2 sells poorly because it is only on the Tencent-Epic Game Store, then we won't get any more games.

What is good for PC gamers is what is good for Remedy/Alan Wake; and what is good for PC gamers is selling it on multiple storefronts.

It reminds when Alan Wake was going to be a PC exclusive then they made it a xbox360 exclusive and cancelled the PC version but not really. And Microsoft said AW was best played from the couch in front of a larger TV screen lol.

well, Alan wake actually worth my 360. it was true system seller but sadly Micorsoft wanted to promote thier baby Gears/Halo so Alan wake got overshadowed. it was not mainstream enough for audience.

because it was not MP online game.

beside open world Alan wake would suck, idea was nice but it will be badly executed. what we got was fine. and exactly what it would be kind of game. microsoft didnot care about or liked Alan wake in general thats why they let remedy to acquire its ip.

they scared that quality of Alan wake would outclass thier baby (halo/gears).
