Remember how they claimed the UE5 Nanite/Lumen demo was made possible "because of the PS5" and Tim Sweeny tried to make us believe only the fast SSD in the PS5 could pull it off and PC's would have to catch up. Well, Timmy-boy was called on his bullshit because a bunch of Chinese engineers ran the demo on a SATA SSD without any problem.

Introducing Valley of the Ancient demo. Epic showcased it running at 1080p/30fps on console with their new reconstruction technique. In the demo page, these are the requirements:

My system is in my sig. 9900K at stock clocks, 16GB of VRAM, and a 2080 Ti. I run the game without any problem at 100% screen percentage on a 3440x1440 monitor and get 35-45fps at Epic settings.

Don't believe me?

Here is the game running on an HDD, presumably at 1080p. Notice it has no problem with I/O stutters.

Here it is running on a 3090 at 4K. 4x the resolution of consoles.

And reportedly, this is running the editor which loads the whole demo in one go and takes a large chunk of ram. People say the standalone demo caps out at 4-6GB of RAM. I got about 13-14GB of RAM usage on my end using the editor.

While I do like the PS5's fast SSD and I/O, the claim of it being a "paradigm shift" that will make PC's SSD's obsolete is a complete and utter lie being fed by people we're supposed to trust. Don't forget Epic are salesmen with a nice fat investment from Sony.

Let me ask you this...

You still actually trust companies trying to sell you something?

Their bottom line is selling units and software... not ensuring 100% accuracy for forum dwellers trying to fact check.

I think you need to change your worldview to immediately not believe anything you see until it's credibly proven.

No. I never believed any of Sweeny's claims. This is just to put to rest the idiots who did.

It is always interesting to see the people who don't care sharing that they don't care which requires them to care. 😂

Back to OP. This is no surprise. BS claims are standard with every console launch. The PS5 SSD is this gen God Tier technology to which Sony fannies ate up in heaping spoonful. 😂

It's all just marketing in the end. The fact people take that marketing, blow it out of proportion by about 1000%....that's on them.

An SSD is an SSD at the end of the day. Some are better than others, but not better enough to really make it worth blowing out of proportion.

Unreal Engine is used on sooooooooooo many games it would simply not make sense to make it somehow exclusively better for PS5 (or exclusive at all) unless they were paid literal billions of dollars. It's take dozens of millions (maybe hundreds) to develop a top-tier game engine, and it's big money for companies that manage to do so and sell it.

Thing is.... the camera of this new demo project is not moving that fast and most likely reusing a lot of the same terrain assets (haven't tried it out yet). The initial flying sequence was faster, featured more diverse assets, and had a larger scale. So, it is not an apples to apples comparison. The initial reveal may very well struggle with an HDD and I would imagine that they have optimized the streaming since then as well.

Isn’t your graphics card better than the recommended? Are you saying the RAM requirements are bs? I’m not sure how your cpu compares to the recommended.

Good point. I wonder if the 1st demo was fake. 1440p internal while imo looking better (not the same exact environments tho). New vid is 1080p and doesn't look as good imo. Maybe moreso because it wasn't as cinematic? I don't know.

1080p/30 on consoles? Yikes!

Well, we already know he was lying when he tried to DC the original demo on PS5 against a 2 year old laptop.

Indeed it is. I am just saying that the flying scene from the first reveal is more demanding of the storage and streaming. So, it is not a fair comparison. It most likely exceeds the capabilities of a typical HDD.

Do you even know what FUD is? It stands for "Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt". Basically, it's any active campaign to attack and delegitimize something by any method necessary to sour public opinion on it. You know, like we do in this forum. This is just garden variety product overselling.

How is this relevant when it's not the same demo?

Also where are the resolution counts for this demo on the PS5?

They have double/quadruple the RAM on these machines, and additional GPU RAM beyond that. Of course they can rely less on fast storage than a console with 16GB total RAM.

If the demo indeed uses 4-6GB tho then Sweeney is full of it, and we'll have to wait to see how Ratchet & Clank runs on PC to compare.

That high RAM requirement is for UE5 it self with all the development tools, not just the stand alone game/demo.

Actually no! The flying sequence from the earlier demo used pretty much the same assets/scale and you're forgetting that in this demo they switched to a completely new/different scene with different assets almost as fast as R&C 'rifts'.

Besides why would anyone doubt the fact that UE5 streaming wouldn't work without the PS5 like SSD speed/IO. It's a multiplat engine designed to run on a wide range of hardware including phones and slow ass HDDs.

@BassMan: You’re correct, but I don’t think the speed of the old demo vs the current one exceeds the difference in speed between an old HDD and an SSD.

Although I think HDD’s might not cut it in the near future, a decent SATA SSD should do the job.

Is it really that surprising? Sony does this with nearly every new console.

PS1 - Million polygons

PS2 - Emotion Engine

PS3 - Cell

PS5 - SSD

PS4 is the only one where Sony didn't inflate the specs.

Like digital foundry said all previous unreal engine tech demos features were downgraded on consoles, when the actual games released.

None of the unreal engine 3 used dynamic lighting/shadows gears of war didnt or unreal tournament 3 like they shown in this demo lol.

unreal engine 5 will be no different.
