Why do we keep getting games like these on fully compatible 3D systems? I'm not saying it's necessarily bad; I'd just like some actual 3D platformers, which are extremely scarce in comparison. I guarentee this new Yoshi's Land game will be 2D or quasi-2D/2.5D/operates on a 2D plane. I want a three dimensional adventure, damnit!

What do you guys think?

I enjoy the 2D resurgance but it DOES suck that 3d platformers are pretty much gone. Mario Galaxy games were amazing but super linear, and De Blob and Epic Mickey were both pretty meh. We getting Sly 4 next year tho which is great :)

I fully agree! It would be fine if we had tons of great 3D ones, but we don't! We hardly have any.

I prefer 2D over 3D plus it'll be tough to beat a game like SMG2.

But yeah more are welcomed so long as they are good.

They make them because its cheaper and easier to make.

There is also less to screw up. Making a great 3D platformer is incredibly hard. The physics and gameplay need to be just right or the game doesn't work. Then also there is the camera which nobody can ever seem to get right. Theres a reason weve probably only gotten a few really great ones, ever really.

I was ready to rage when I saw the title, but I do agree that there needs to be more 3d platformers.

Still though, 2d platformers always >>>>>>>>> 3d platformers. SMG2 is the only exception to that rule.

And 2d platformers were shut away for too long, so I'm glad to have them back in full force.

NSMBU is amazing. I can't wait to see what Nintendo does with the 3D Mario on wiiu. One area that always lacked in the 3D ones was the fireballs. Add a little bit of shooter action. Touch here on the touch screen, throw there on the tv.

I played Rayman Legends on the Wii U and that game alone almost pushed me to snap up the last 32 GB Wii U they had in stock (GameStop). I love 2D platformers and will always prefer them to 3D but I welcome a game to change my mind... would love a new Jak game personally. Still gotta try out the Sly collection

But 3D platformers have more potential imo. There is so much more they can do with them but it seems like they just don't ever quite venture out or shake things up.

I can't imagine how cool a game like Banjo Nuts and Bolts could have been if those massive landskapes had actual platforming to be done on them. Or a mario game with areas on the same level. With massive castles and walls to climb or place to fly around in the fly cap. Would be so amazing yet they just don't do enough

And people act like TC is bashing 2D platformers. He is not, in fact he likes them! But come on, it is time for some 3D ones that push creativity.

I totally agree about the need for more 3d platformers, but 2d platformers shouldn't have to stop existing for that. I wish to god that Rare would stop with the Kinect s*** and make a sequel to Conker.

I'm not a big fan of platformers, but still interested in 2D ones. Puppeteer is looking good, but I'd love to see a new Jak and Daxter - 3D of course.

I see your point. I guess it's easier for developers to make more money off the 2D ones.

I agree there should be more 3D ones BUT you are completely wrong about Yoshi being better in 3D.

Look at this intro and tell me you wouldn't want it to look like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuCDkfjVE5E

I mean, it would be a cartoon which you could play, except it would also have great gameplay. (opposed to Dragon's Lair which has limited, QTE-based gameplay)

What would be better than this for the young and young at heart?

I do miss some 3D platformers, but we I also like the 2D platformers we are getting. We only get about 2-3 worthwhile ones a year across all the systems so I don't think they need to slow down at all.

I was going through my N64 stuff the other day and saw how many 3D platformers I had and I thought about how much we need them now.

Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2.

They are perfect, but other games cant really follow the formula since it is so centered around the idea of gravity. Where as the original Super Mario set the simple formula in stone and had it as the starting point for all the platformers (jump button, air control, etc).

Do you not even understand that 90% of the time it's simply more intuitive, responsive and fun to play a platformer when the camera and controls are locked in 2D?

People like you annoy because you automatically pick the technological aspects of a game over the gameplay without every thinking that the gameplay is actually the most important aspect.

Until someone makes a 3D platformer that is as intuitive, controls as precisely and flawlessly, and is as much fun as the very best 2D platformers, I'd choose a 2D/2.5D platformer any day of the week.

Nothing, not even the like of Super Mario Galaxy 1/2 has come close to playing/controlling as well as the likes of SMB3, Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. Nothing. Anyone who imagines otherwise clearly hasn't actually compared the quality, precision and reliability of the controls and camera across these games to know any better.

Serioulsy.

It's not about 2D platformers needing to go away. It's just about there needing to be more 3D platformers. With that said, I'm VERY glad collectathon 3D platformers are dead. God I hated those style of platformers. It's a stretch to even call them platformers. Linear 3D platformers seriously need to come back though. I mean these days the only good 3D platformers we get are the Mario, Sonic and R&C games. Sly 4 is coming in 2013 though, so at least there's that. There seriously needs to be a new 3D Rayman. Rayman always seems to raise the bar. Rayman 1 raised the bar for 2D platformers. Rayman 2 raised the bar for 3D platformers. Rayman Origins raised the bar for 2D platformers again. I'd like to see Rayman raise the bar for 3D platformers again.

Yeah, I'd like to see more 3D platformers as well, because quite frankly, most of the 2D platformers we're getting now don't beat anything I played 20 years ago. Aside from Sonic and Mario, there isn't anything decent on the 3D front.

If i'm ever picking a console years from now, i'm going with the one with more 2D exclusives. They tend to be almost unanimously ageless. Compare say, Astal, a praised Saturn 2D platformer from '95 to Mario 64, which came out in '96. Yeah, going with Astal.
