Which do you think is an overall better RPG? Note being more hardcore doesn't means its necessary superior. I give the soul games credit for having better enemies and boss battles. Certainly present a better atmosphere than Elder scrolls games at times.

The Elder Scrolls games in their vanilla forms are not role-playing games. They are action adventure games.

Both series are very different. I honestly think the Souls games are superior to the Elder Scrolls games in every department, except for moddability. I can appreciate Elder Scrolls games when I want to relax, walk around, and just take in the large environments and atmosphere; Skyrim's a great casual experience and there's nothing wrong with that. But as for which series are better games/RPGs it's definitely the Souls games

Morrowind was absolutely seminal. Oblivion was a disastrous step in the wrong direction not just for Elder Scrolls but RPG's in general and Morrowind was so revered people went for Oblivion anyway. People bought into Oblivion eventually because modders spent forever fixing it because like us they wanted it to be 'right'.

Skyrim was and is an absolute disaster that modders are still trying to fix.

Dark Souls and its sequels are mysterious and challenging ergo nothing at all like any Elder Scrolls game since Morrowind I'm honestly not sure why you asked the question.

No point having this discussion. It's like trying to compare Street Fighter and Tekken. Tekken clearly is the deeper fighting game, but Street Fighter is more popular and the one most people can get into since it has a lower entry requirement.

Early elder scrolls game were actually less casuals when it came to the quest.

Souls by a long shot, though these games aren't really that comparable.

I think Mortal Kombat would have been a more fitting comparison, both Tekken and Street Fighter are very involving, technical games. You kinda just come off as a Street Fighter hater tbh.

Elder Scrolls and its not even remotely close. Better worlds, better archery, better lore, better missions, better graphics, better music. I cant think of one area where the souls games top TES besides melee combat and even then, Skyrim with mods destroys all Souls games combined.

Skyrim is better than the Souls games.

But Souls are all better than Oblivion/Morrowind.

Hard to choose.

Yea, Oblivion and Morrowind were amazing at the time but they have not aged well at all. Skyrim has, its so much better now than it was at launch.

Folks who like to do the same thing over and over and over again are really the folks who should be saying Souls games. At the very least, the Elder Scrolls games have an element of surprise.

Morrowind did it best.

Talking Elder Scrolls, specifically Skyrim: Its nothing but crap gameplay and a boring, ugly, overly large world. Oblivion was a much better game. Fighting dragons is so dumb. God, I hate that game!

yea they can. arrows become deadlier, enemies parry and power swing more, you can change the distance at which weapons hit so you have to get up close to enemies. mods can make the combat way more intense and better than the swing, run in circles and repeat combat in dark souls. plus there is a lot more variety to skyrim's combat.

Side Note: One thing both games share is their ability to be exploited tecnhically for the gamer's gain. That's one thing they definitely share in common.

I think the guild missions in oblivion were better but the overall world in skyrim is so much better and detailed. almost every dungeon feels different and has its own story.

@musicalmac: Like that giant skeleton conveniently placed to kick your ass off a cliff when you turn the corner. Shoulda seen my face. The first time you encounter a mimic. Every time you discover a secret door. Nearly every first encounter with a new enemy is a surprise of its own.

The Souls games have terrific gameplay, boss fights, atmosphere, and better thought level design and game worlds.

Bethesda games are shallow, simple, dull, and glorified amusement parks that hold under no scrutiny. I get the appeal of what Bethesda does, it gives you a toy box to explore, but a fundamental game? They fucking suck at it post Morrowind.

well that question would mean that we had atleast one RPG to chose from, no?

Well I suoopse the TES series can still be considered an rpg, so it would win by default, but barely.

No souls game have ever been an RPG, but rather a dungeon crawler, yeah they have been around for more then a few decades, both in PnP and pc/console games. So it is closer in relation to Diablo. Atleast if you are used to play PnP rpgs you would come to that conclusion (you know the experiences that RPGs on pc and consoles try to emulate?).

To be exact the Souls games woul be Little more then a small part of a larger RPG, taking part inside the dungeon part of an rpg while ignoring all the other parts that technically makes an rpg (meaning the focus of a dungeon in a larger RPG, or the sub genre where all notions of social interaction and none hostile envioments are present outside of save zones).

As a game though the souls games are way better, they capture the feel of a dungeon crawlers quite well, and I have often stated that the souls games are likely close to how diablo would look if made for the first time now (as they follow near exact same design philosophy).

I have my own issues with the TES games, mostly due to them ignoring one of the most important facets of RPGs namely choice and consequence (as in no consequences to your actions really, atleast it is VERY slim).

The Souls games do have elements of surprise, and if you don't believe this I think you just played through the games with a guide and had those surprises spoiled for you. Like JazzCat said above there's a lot of shit in the world that you can choose to discover and seek out, and which aren't made obvious to the player.

Unless you consider "surprises" to be those "random" events that happen in Skyrim's open world, where a Stormcloak prisoner's being escorted by Imperials or an Orc asks you to kill him. Those are cool to see the first time but once you put a decent amount of time in the game their repetition becomes immersion-breaking.

Please could you elaborate in what way there is more variety to Skyrim's combat compared to the Souls games? Because in Souls there are so many ways to tackle a given fight than my memory of any Elder Scrolls game.

How is that even a question? Elder Scrolls, of course.
