https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/10/tech/electronic-arts-hack/index.html

Hackers have broken into the systems of Electronic Arts, one of the world's biggest video game publishers, and stolen source code used in company games, a spokesperson confirmed to CNN Business on Thursday.

Online forum posts reviewed by CNN Business and vetted by an independent cybersecurity expert show that on June 6, hackers claimed to have obtained 780 gigabytes of data from EA (EA), including the Frostbite source code, which is the game engine that powers the FIFA, Madden, and Battlefield series of video games, among others.

So there's that.

Aw yeeee. You love to see it.

Typically stuff like this doesn't result in tangible benefits for end users, but hey maybe we'll get more insight into just how much of a shitbag EA is.

Independent fact checkers means nothing anymore. They saw the claim and moved from there.

Secondly... does anyone care that it was EA that got hit this time? Outside of the upcoming Mass Effect, nothing with their logo on it has my interest.

I am surprised that none on this forum are cheering the hack, as no company deserves to be hacked, even if it the most hated in the world.

I just don't understand why things like water treatment facilities, oil refineries and government databases are on the internet. The AP (Associated Press) has had its own wire for decades, it can't be that hard.

Well that sucks, especially for any game that would be online that uses the breached data.

I am more surprised, that 750GB of data was pulled without a red flag.

I wonder if EA gave a shit about the psychologically manipulated whales they squeezed or the gambling they promote to kids?

Oh that's right, they didn't. Actually defended it.

So yea, they can get fucked. Burn down, do the world a favour.

In what way the hack is "good"? How would you feel if your computer is hacked and the hackers stole your personal information on it?

did the hackers decide before or after getting access to the code that it wasn't worth holding them to ransom over

I feel for the employees who may have had data about them exposed (not clear if that was the case, hopefully not). As for EA itself, it's hard to have any sympathy for them.

Although I am all for EA to get fked, I do think this is a very dangerous trend that needs to be stopped immediately.

Capcom and CDPR recently got hacked and who knows what kind of employee and consumer personal data that got stolen. Sony's massive hack back in 2011 also caused so many user data got compromised. Very concerning trend.

Yes it is concerning to see large companies with such poor cyber security protections. Are they even NIST 800-171A compliant!?

Would that be the trend of making their key assets, like source code, accessible by outside networks?

Yep.

If a moral quandary comes up, irrelevant to them as long as they benefit, and they will go (and have) went to full lengths to ensure they benefit at the expense of human suffering, in fact, that's their primary target. The vulnerable.

Fuckers absolutely deserving of being fucked themselves.

Have you read anything about the Anthem development? My god, those poor bastards. What a shame. People give Bioware a lot of flack for not making games like they used to, but honestly it really is all EA's fault.

@mrbojangles25: yeah they could've allowed an exception. Like allow Bioware to continue to use Unreal Engine....

No instead they forced all their developers on Frostbite, with the only exception being Respawn, who can use whatever the hell they want.

Disaster would be the hackers getting access to our credit card information. Everything else imo is just a problem for EA.

As for the source code, I don't know enough about game development to give you an answer unfortunately.

EA might try to pull some stunts to make DRM tougher which means their legit customers will get hassled every time they buy a game, but outside of that I don't see any consequences for us.

Truth be told if this spelled doom for EA I'd be OK with that. One less big publisher out there. As for jobs lost, well, game development is fickle and most of those folks are probably contracted anyway.

Maybe ransom? "Give us money or we release the Frostbyte engine on the internet", maybe? Game engine development costs a lot of money and is a long-term investment, I could see hackers doing that.

Hackers that exist for no other reasons than to make others miserable are about as low on the food chain of scum as they come.

Livelihoods are at stake and while people might think it's all about EA as a corporation attacks like this effect the people working there more than the big dogs. They just make some moves, fire a few people, realign holiday bonuses, go on hiring and promotion freezes, and boom everything is ok in 1% land.

@mrbojangles25: As for jobs lost at EA, I would sympathize more with the employees if they are not paid well and it would be difficult for them to find another job than if they are well paid (or even over paid) and they can easily find another job.
