Nothing shown so far from anyone warranted the need for a conference. These companies are doing nothing but wasting hours of our time when they could simply post trailers on YT. Most of the games shown at E3 this year don't even have actual gameplay. There have been no real megatons or surprises to be had.

Sony's got the winning formula down pat. When you've got a banger to show give it its own special showcase to let it shine and to value your viewers time.

Yeah, E3 is a dying relic of the 90s.

Still, some fun can still be had swinging a dead cat around, as long as the flesh and tendons haven't rotted away so much that the corpse rips apart from the centripetal force.

Going to have to agree on this point. It actually does seem pointless now.

I've got a little hope that WB managed a collaboration with Nickelodeon for a dark and gritty Ninja Turtles. At the very least an update on that Harry Potter game so my kid gets something to enjoy watching.

Then maybe Nintendo has something... ?

No point in E3 anymore especially when this Digital Era means publishers and developers can host their own event on their own schedule. RIP E3 it was fun.

Well put, agree completely. MS conference was a perfect case in point. They had a couple of things to show. The rest was third party padding and way too early trailers for games not to be released for well over a year. They filled their 90 minutes, but it was confusing and anticlimactic.

I can't imagine who still wants to fly to LA to sit around and watch a bunch of trailers for games, then wait in stupid long lines to play a slice of them in 2021. And come out the whole experience totally underwhelmed. Publishers need to do quarterly directs when they have something to show. I think it's better for keeping up interest levels.

@gym_lion: @Pedro: To be fair, NathanDrake does has a point and E3 as of now and even though we're still in the pandemic situation and going in this digital wasn't the best and I still prefer in-person showing but as madrocketeer stated its a dying relic of the 90s and late 00 due to social media just makes E3 irrelevant.

Anything can be irrelevant when made irrelevant. It is currently not. When it becomes irrelevant, we would not be having this conversation. Until then, the show/event continues.

People like events and people like social gatherings. Expecting that events and social gatherings will end just because of social media is a bit shortsighted as far as I am concerned.

I rather have social gatherings and in-person events than digital-only events. Digital-only events seem detached and de-humanizing to me, just like distant learning.

And one thing: social media is over-rated!

Yeah I miss the old e3. The last good e3 was 2018 and so far this has been bad. WB no SS or Gotham knight or lego Star Wars. Microsoft nothing but crap like the last 20 years and Sony skipping e3 again and no Activision either has it would be nice to get a Tony hawk 3-4 remake or something.

Geoff Keighly did a great job with the Summer Game Fest show. He has a sense of what people want to see. Whereas these other shows are boring. But I hope Capcom and Nintendo come out with great shows.

Disagree. I enjoy E3 very much and have enjoyed this year’s quite a bit so as well. Hoping that next year’s is even bigger and better with live crowds and everything. I’d like to see it go on for many years to come.

I love how people act like it is not cool to have a week where the industry comes together to showcase games together.

Sure. What a bad idea. (Sony fans....special)

E3 to show and play games is basically unnecessary.

But, if it was treated like a comic con where there was more than just the conferences, such as having an experience with a festival like atmosphere, that would keep it going.

Sony hasn't shown anything whatsoever to buy a PS5. Microsoft hasn't shown me anything to buy an XSX.

So the new gen still sucks. With or without a showcase or e3.

Can't really see why any of those companies couldn't held their own individual shows on their channels. There's really no need for an E3 anymore. None of those companies need this show.

Have to agree with the OP. Publishers have shown that they're fully capable of successfully producing their own presentations for Twitch/YouTube/etc. (OK, maybe not quite Gearbox, but Embracer will get that straightened out.)

The only real thing that is missing with individual virtual presentations is the hands-on experience for the retail buyers and media, but technologies such as Parsec mean those can be done remotely as well.

For the first time in ages I didnt feel compelled to tune in as e3 was happening live. I'll just wait for the inevitable sizzle reel compilation to be put up on YouTube.
