DSiWare Logo

Nintendo's portable service has been out for exactly one year now, but with the announcement of the 3DS and the lack of transferring DSiWare games to the new XL, it hasn't been a popular feature. Not only are most SW goers ignoring it or bashing it, but Gamespot has neglected to review nearly all of its major titles, including the likes of Mario and Dragon Quest.

The breakdown looks rather depressing.

On Gamespot...

5 games, or .03%, of the DSiWare's 150+ library, has been reviewed

1% of titles in the DS' Top 100 are DSiWare games

0 AAAE

1 AAE (Dark Void Zero)

2 AE (Art S t y l e: BOXLIFE, Art S t y l e: AQUIA)

____________________________________________

Is Nintendo really that bad at supplying its own service with decent games?

Not quite. A look at Metacritic tells us a slightly different story.

____________________________________________

On Metacritic...

9% of titles in the DS' Top 100 are DSiWare games

6.3% of titles in the DS' Top 300 are DSiWare games

7.9% of DSiWare games have four or more reviews that give the game an aggregate score of 70 or higher

63% of all good+ DSiWare games are published by Nintendo

1 AAAE (Flipnote Studio - second highest rated DS game of all time)

8 AAE (Mighty Flip Champs!, Mario vs. DK, Dark Void Zero, Art S t y l e: DIGIDRIVE, Art S t y l e: PICTOBITS, Dragon Quest Wars, Starship Defense, Art S t y l e: BOXLIFE)

10 AE (Asphalt 4: Elite Racing, Pop Island, Art S t y l e: CODE, Bejeweled Twist, Dr. Mario Express, Trajectile, Real Soccer 2009, Bookworm, Birds & Beans, Art S t y l e: AQUIA)

____________________________________________

Clearly DSiWare games will always account for a small percentage of good DS games, but the number is growing. And while less than 8% of its games can even get a 70 aggregate score, it's partially because of the lack of reviews -- games like Pinball Pulse and Bomberman Blitz, with more hype, would probably be considered good overall.

You have the numbers, and you can look up the games. Point of the thread:

Has DSiWare/Nintendo delivered in DSiWare's first year?

Has absolutely not delivered. I'd even be inclined to say it's the worst online game service in the history of videogames - topping out even Sega Channel, where you had to download Mortal Kombat in pieces and couldn't play certain characters against others due to memory limits. Doesn't help that the DSiWare store's interface itself is an abomination, clunky, slow, and painful to find something even if you know exactly what it is. We've got a handful of decent Art Style games, some passable others that work in a pinch for people looking to blow their points on something (anything), lots of garbage and lots of clocks. It's improved a tiny bit since launch, but not very much. You can tell that Nintendo and other developers don't give a **bleep** about it.

Amen to that. I like the library a bit more than you, but the interface is the worst I've ever used in an online service

I think Nintendo really nuked DSiWare acceptance by stopping people transferring their games to the XL and probably 3DS. The same thing will likely happen with the Virtual Console and WiiWare with the Wii 2.

DSi is a waste of time, espeacially when the 3DS is practically around the corner.

Man, Flipnote studio rocks. Also, Real Soccer is fun. Some other games you mentioned are good, but the rest of the service pretty much blows.

I don't understand why they don't just give us an account system, like PSN or Steam. It's so much more efficient and so much safer

i'm pretty satisfied, honestly. delivers what i want: alternative games that are fun but not worth a cartridge (or full retail price).

Only games that appeal to me are the Art Styles, Star Ship Defense, Flipnote Studio and Mighty Flip Champs. And that's it, in around a year. Hopefully Nintendo actually has a good interface and puts out some 1st party titles with the 3DS.

Of course they have. Look at the first post and some of these games' critical receptions DSiWare apps never get any hype, but there are some good ones out there.

I think it's average. Nothing spectacular, but those who have it are lucky. I think it only working with only one kind of DSi is what is holding it back.

Adding Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, and SNES/Genesis/etc games to the service in a handheld-based Virtual Console would singlehandedly save the service from being as horrible as it is. Kind of like how the Wii's Virtual Console redeems the mediocrity of WiiWare.

Crossing my fingers for this feature in 3DS. Really want to play Zelda Link's Awakening and Oracle of Seasons/Ages...
