I wonder how every thread in SW gets de-railed and becomes a war zone between 3-5 people (2 of which are trolls) and then keep the thread alive for ~400 posts?Â

Hard to know for sure, I think they peaked 800,000 during Wrath, maybe even more. Nowadays it's certainly not as high and subs have dipped down to 8.3 million (from 12 million in Wrath). Still the most active MMO by far.
DOTA 2 and League have higher playtime than WoW now which isn't surprising (http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/04/10/dota-2-league-of-legends-most-played-pc-games-in-the-west). The subscription model is starting to prove a liability for WoW as Blizzard attempts to expand the cash shop. I anticipate they'll either axe the subscription fee, reduce it, or go buy-to-play sometime in the near future.Â
