A newly released Vita update is presenting some users from accessing the PlayStation Store on Sony’s spunky little handheld. It’s also draining some people’s batteries. Good times all around.

Vita users first started reporting problems with update 3.57 earlier this week on forums like Reddit and NeoGAF, and I confirmed them for myself last night: when I tried to connect to the PlayStation Store, the screen remained on “Please wait...” for upwards of ten minutes before ultimately giving up. This morning, my battery appeared to be draining faster than it ever has.

Here’s hoping this will be fixed soon. We’ve reached out to Sony but they haven’t commented yet.

SOURCE

My Vita has been having some problems connecting to the PSN Store (and some battery drainage- though that might have more to do with the fact that this thing is years old, has constantly been used, and is probably past its 500 charge cycles already), but nothing as bad as what the article and the comments on Reddit and NeoGAF are describing.

But anyway... don't update your PS Vita just yet.

I would say I hope that Sony releases a new update to fix this issue some time soon, but bwahahahahahahahahaha, Sony caring about the Vita.

Curious, can battery be replaced simply by hitting up a Radio Shack with the right battery model number or something like that?

I wonder about that myself for my 3DS in future. Though battery seems solid still after 3 years.

I don't think so. You can send it in to Sony to have the battery replaced if you want, though.

I haven't noticed any issues while playing through P4G the last few days, but I'll pay attention to whether any of these issues are indeed happening since the update.

I already did and have had some problem connecting. Actually this brings to mind for some time now I haven't been able to download in the background on my Vita while playing. If I'm playing a game it'll go for a few seconds and I get a notice saying download error.

Meh, just updated yesterday. When I try to go to the store I get an error, after clicking ok it tells me I need to sign in to PSN to use it even though I am signed in, and after another click im in. So it works for me but with a little hassle. Fix it, System Wars.

@charizard1605: You can buy new batteries for the Vita for only 20 dollars a pop. They use the same as Android ones, you just gotta open the little guy up and put it in but they're dirt cheap on Amazon. I bought 2 recently.

Didn't know that. Is it soldered on, or something?

@speedfreak48t5p: its more reducing support. the last few firmware releases have been about turning off features. the youtube app was removed (it works in the browser now), the near service (did that ever really work?) was removed and the latest was to turn off facebook features (it had facebook features...who knew?). the upsade of that is more ram available for games..15% more. yay!

anywho i updated a couple of days ago and just tried signing in (the EU store here). seems to be working fine. maybe a region specific or model specific issue (im using the original)?.

@charizard1605: There's a little wire that hangs from the Vita battery but it's exactly the same as an Android's. It latches on the same way but it sucks because you have to unscrew half the system open to do it. Scary at first but well worth it.

If they didn't care at all wouldnt they discontinue it and pull it off shelves, like Zune?

Anyways, I usually wait for ALL updates, unless I'm going to game online and forced to do it day of. History shows all updates can effect either a large number of consoles or small, but I'd rather be safe.

Even Zune stayed on the shelves for about three or four years.

Plus Vita has a market in Japan, so discontinuing it entirely would be ceding a very important part of a major market to Nintendo without a fight.

hmm, ok carry on with your anti Vita propaganda then. :P

I still want one and I'll wait for them to get under $125 with a decent memory card.

Anti Vita propaganda? Bro, I love this thing. It's my second favorite system this generation, it's the system with my favorite game of all time, it's the system I like playing on the most, it's the only system I have ever owned that I have played at least once a week every week I have owned it, and I've owned this thing for years. I have no anti Vita propaganda, I'm one of the last standing Vita bros. I adore this handheld, and that's when even Sony doesn't.

Chances of getting one that low are really tough. System prices fall, memory prices don't for some reason.

Hence the - :p

I think SONY does like the thing, as much as it makes business sense and unfortunately that's what it comes down to..always. You can look back at games consoles like the Dreamcast and everyone pretty much agrees it was awesome but it sunk Sega. I think that's what Sony is doing to the Vita, they look how its performing, compare to Nintendo devices, look at cost and came up with decision. I mean if it was selling that good, Sony or anybody else would support it.

It really comes down to Nintendo owning the market and it seems there's no business sense making a product to even come in 2nd place.

I'm holing my breath for prices, but eventually I'll get one. I get every PSN+ game for it, whether it looks like garbage or not, becuase why not, they come with PSN+ and I'm always going to have it. But the time I do get one, I'm guessing I'll have 50 games for it.

I just got a slim Vita a few days ago and had to update to activate the system. I can get into the Store but it randomly boots me out and I have to retry it. Yeah, Xbox Live is garbage anyways, which is why we always rock PSN. I'll get a Vita soon too I think. Going to Ebay the WiiU.

That was my first thought. The PS3 store still boots me after looking at more than a couple pages, and it's been this way for over a year now. Making the Store unfriendly so consumers are prone to spend less money, yet one more way that Sony spreads the Live, Love, Learn, and Save philosophy.

awwww yeahhhh

Another soul that was touched by SONY's time honored and proven life philosophy.
