Does Tomb Raider still have shitty characters and story?

My friends, being pretentious and a big bald dickhead, David Cage claimed video games should seek "outside help". Implying those within the industry, aren't good enough. Tomb Raider had Terry Pratchetts daughter (Rhianna Prachett) write Tomb Raider, the reboot in which an English girl says "oh ah" and "i can do this" alot.

Having played the game, It's difficult to feel anything but apathy and muster up enough motivation to play beyond 20 minutes at a time. Is this factually based proof, David Cage is an idiot? Should Terry Pratchetts offspring, cease interfering with video games?

lol so because Terry Pratchett is a good writer and is incredible succesful in his books that automaticly makes his daughter a good wirter??? i don't think it works that way.

David Cage is right sometimes its good to get outside help from the industry of story telling, it would of been better to get Terry than his daughter, i to found the story a bit bland and boring, and when will we get the great tomb raider house to mess about in again, tomb raider 2 was awesome messing about at her house

Most of the support characters (like Reyes and Jonas) it can be argued are underdeveloped, but there's a lot more going on for Lara besides just the "I can do it". Sure she starts out frail and timid, but in each experience she is pushed into her growth and we see a lot of this in her exchanges with Roth and Sam, as well as her taking on the challenges of the island's inhabitants.

I'm not saying that Tomb Raider is pulitzer prize winning writing (even given the medium) but you aren't exactly making a strong case when you over simplify and generalize to just one line you selectively focus on.

On the contrary, new Lara is one of the best video game protagonists ever.

Thought the TR reboot was pretty bad, actually. The story was uninteresting as well as the characters...who's names I can't recall. Not a one. Controls were clunky as well as animations. Lara was the only voice well acted. Was disappointed.

The one thing control wise I didn't like was jumping. You had too much control of Lara in the air, which was a little silly and felt wrong. Other than that I thought the controls were spot on

TR 2013 was a great game and a step up from what I thought were normally pretty mediocre games.

Also it's a game. They're supposed to be relaxing, so sit back enjoy it for what it is and unwind.

To me it does. The first few TR games got by on being new, and having a really fun exploration element to them. Yeah the story wasn't the best but it was interesting. But from TR3 on they have all been horrible in terms of characters and story, before the fun factor more than kept it afloat but after other games started having the same type of gameplay mechanics TR's awfulness really shone through in the light of other games that did it all better.

Uncharted has both great gameplay and great characters/story, its the example TR fails at. Although I wish UC did have a little more sense of exploration in it.

Even the new reboot is awful because the game pads itself out with "find all the hidden optional items" type of back tracking, and the whole hook for the game is it tries to be "realistic and gritty" but all it did for me is make it bland and boring.

The story sucks. But the gameplay is fantastic. Games should stop trying to be movies. David Cage has tried the hardest and has succeeded at what he wants to accomplish. But I doubt we want all games to be like BEYOND or HEAVY RAIN.

Look at that movie The Counselor. Script by Cormac McCarthy. One of our greatest literary writers and he wrote a craptacular movie.

Being good in one medium does not make you good in another. Games should be about GAME-PLAY and experiences. Not so much about great writing. If you get me.

This isn't about standards. Your like or dislike of Tomb Raider and it's characters/story is subjective. Your opinion on that is your own. The consistency in the mechanics is objective, in which the controls are very smooth and fluid. The bow in particular has very tight precision and really captures the feel of pulling and releasing.

Lol discussing things like this on SW is so pointless. Everyone just state their opinion without any arguments whatsoever. I bet most wouldn't even be able to retell the story. Not that I'm any better, but these threads sure are rubbish.

I was just looking at the newest Tomb Raider videos the other day. While watching i could not help over hear all the moaning and screaming Lara does during the game. I remember when i first got into the Tomb Raider series, my wife came in the room when she heard all the moaning and asked, " What are you watching ? " Lol ... I was playing the game, but her lady life like moaning, and screams are just a bit over rated. Thats why i stuck with Uncharted, the man series of the Tomb Raider series. Might be a whole different game, but its in the same line up basis.

The plot and setting are actually pretty cool. But Lara...god. It almost seems like the game is making fun of character reboots. There is absolutely no believability that Lara can do any of the things she can do and still act like the generic scatter brained young adult they depict her as.

Why is she so good at climbing even though she doesn't think she can do it?

Why is she so good at shooting using just about any weapon invented?

How were her internal organs still functioning after all the falling and screaming that went on in those interactive and non-interactive cutscenes?

I have to believe there was a lack of cooperation or coordination between those developing the game and the ones developing the story. The idea of having an origin story for Lara Croft without flashbacks or time jumps is...insane. You don't go from normal to a Tomb Raider in one day. Why did anyone even think it was going to work?

I thought the TR reboot was great and had a fun story. You want bad story with shit side characters look no further than Resident Evil Revelations.

Her "growth" happens like an hour into the game and then it's repeated and it's ludonarrative dissonance out the ass with her struggling in cutscenes but mowing down asses and traversing huge obstacles like it was simple shit in gameplay.

What killed it for me was how terribly voiced she was. Camilla may be British born but her British accent is long gone when you hear her talk normally, the one she puts on for Lara sounds fake and forced and grated on me so much.

The game almost takes on a creepy fetish like obsession with killing her in the most brutal and violent ways. I mean....seriously at times its almost a snuff film when she dies.

Of course she is but the older games almost embraced that and didn't take themselves too seriously. Well the first 3 did anyway. TR2013s problems is they try and make a cheesy character serious and gritty

I played Tomb Raider and Uncharted 3 back to back. When Drake dies it's quick and with minimal lingering. When Lara dies, it's LONG, takes a few seconds, she screams and cries, we see all the brutal detail and then you start from the last check point. Talk about a big difference. Don't get me started on the psychosexual imagery of Lara being impailed through the face during the slipping in water scenarios.

I enjoyed the Tomb Raider reboot, but agree that Lara was the only good character, all the others were underdeveloped to the extent that I don't even remember them. Would still be cool to see a sequel though.

Not to be mistaken, the game is very good but its difficult to ignore all the rubbish about lara's first adventure n she cries n she goes on to kill everyone in the game. @AdobeArtist: Sadly am. Wasn't impressed with anything in this game and played on pc maxed out, not some 360 version running on low. Art direction with temples in dem mountains was cool but graphics themselves were pretty meh and you could clearly see its just a console port.

Last two post basically summed up tomb raider for me. This game was simply Marcus Croft: Gear Assassin Raiders. I can't do this!!! I can't do that!!! Then this girl climbs up a mountain wall with one arm and a pick axe. "roll eyes". It's even more funny when she sets off a bear trap and even impaled by a metal bar and then has the tenacity to walk up to the old guy Roth, who gets bitten by a wolf, and says--"you need help, like bandages, antiseptic". I'm here thinking, no Laura, if there's anyone on this god damn island who really needs first aide.....it's you. But oh well, even with your serious injuries, scaling a mountain wall with one arm is still easy. So yes, this story was shitty. For a game made to be cinematic--like every other game after COD4, it's all shitty when your main component of being cinematic doesn't work: it's storyline.
