Hello friends,

So you have your fav franchise, do you want it to become mainstream? or it would be just popular among its fanbase?

well for me, I never would want my games to be mainstream. once they become mainstream, they become bad. and bad. like for example the mainstream series today COD was not started as mainstream series. COD1 and COD2 were not mainstream thus were good. moment they become popular, well known, mainstream. they starting to suck after modern war.

GTA is most mainstream series of all time and guess what? its always suck.

when ubisoft were not mainstream during early splinter cell days. they used to make masterpieces, moment they gone full mainstream, thier games now suck. Far cry 2 was not mainstream and was best in series. now far cry is mainstream and series suck.

on other hand Doom is always popular among fanbase but its not mainstream series yet still Rocking. the mainstream awards didnot give it any award show how amazing this series is still. i dont want it to become mainstream and popular and yearly otherwise it would starting to suck.

Hitman is 20 year old series still kicking today, they tried to make it kinda mainstream with absolution but it failed. now its still amazing but nichie franchise.

Cyberpunk is biggest proof because in 2012 when it was first announced, it was not suppose to be mainstream game but now its biggest launch and mainstream of 2020 yet it turned out bad.

so I believe games should not be mainstream otherwise they will be ruined. and in the end there are 99% chance that if any franchise become popular and mainstream. it would be ruined.

would you want your games to be mainstream? lets discuss

Personally, i adore mainstream titles like DeusEx. It allows me to be more immersed in the game's world knowing the game is very popular on IGN.

I just enjoy my games for what they are. There’s a wide variety of games that I enjoy and them being mainstream or not has never been a prerequisite. I do like seeing the games that I enjoy get popular because I just like seeing others enjoy games that I like. However it is also very beneficial in a practical aspect because that also means that if they have a multiplayer component then chances are better that the online multiplayer will be more active.

I am worried to ask a stranger about Deux Ex and he thinks i am asking him to have sex.

Pff. Doom is as mainstream as they come. It was the game that put first-person shooters on the map, after all.

You know what's NOT mainstream and may never be? Virtual Reality. That's right, you're not a true gamer unless you're willing to strap two LCD monitors to your eyeballs.

Why not? Since this thread seems to be all about arbitrary categorization nonsense anyway.

DOOM and Deus Ex, games that top charts, sell in the millions, and have huge budgets aren't mainstream?

I don't give a phuck if the game is good and I enjoy it. Asscreed series is mainstream and IMO is mediocre at best, so I give it crap most of the time. Same thing with Halo.

GTA is super mainstream and I happen to like it though.

When it comes to music though, most if not all mainstream music is shit.

I don’t think ”mainstream” is the problem. I think the service stuff is. Especially how it poisons SP game design. The bloated open world selling time savers.

This has nothing to do with mainstream though.

The games I usually played are considered mainstream. I really not concerned whether the games I played are mainstream or not, I am more concerned whether they are well-developed and are fun to play.

It doesn't matter. Not all mainstream games are bad. Not all niche games are good.

Metro 2033 is awful, last light and exodus are just okay games.

Doom is a fucking mainstream game. What are you talking about?

Actually, all of the "non-mainstream" games you mentioned are all mainstream.

The Souls game started out as a niche action game, but the Dark Souls series is now reported to have sold a total of 27 million copies. It's an example of how a niche game has grown into mainstream series yet the quality has been getting better and better. The reason is that Miyazaki does not compromise his vision for the masses.

Kojima likewise pushed a niche game called Metal Gear for MXS2 into the mainstream series by expanding the budget and scale of each new game for about 30 years without compromising his vision. Without such a strong vision, popular games could easily turn into profit-oriented mass market products.

Yes... if it meant more games that I like were made then sure. If it meant that the games that I like changed to appeal to more people .... well depends on what those changes are.

Now? They are mainstream enough.

na I kinda want the opposite my fav series have fallen apart like Final Fantasy from going to mainstream like FF7R and FF15...its time to go back to regular ff6/ff7 enough with branching out to these real time combat people that just want to smash things. Really enough is enough screw those guys go play zelda or something.

I don't think there's been anything you've hyped TC that isn't mainstream lol. I've played some very niche games, and nothing you like comes close to it lol.

Don't care.

If I really dig a game, I like to see it do well enough. Even if only to ensure the dev keeps making games. And if it's a mp game, want it to do well enough to have a healthy player base. About the extent of it.

But I can enjoy stuff like ULTRAKILL, Fight 'N Rage, and TW101 every bit as much as games like SMO, BotW, and Doom Eternal.

I just like a good game.

Doom being bogged down and slowed down by skill trees and upgrades pretty much makes it mainstream. They made that game for the masses.

Is there a good modern shooter that is just a pure shooter and doesn't try to be a pseudo-RPG or some such crap?

I want the games I like to be as successful as they need to be to net the developers a good salary, and allow them to make more games.

No more, no less.

While I don't unconditionally hate publicly-owned publishers, for the most part they don't subscribe to the above philosophy.

@hardwenzen said:

Deus Ex is not mainstream in the slightest. It's just highly, almost unanimously, respected and appreciated by those who have played it.

exactly. I want games to be successful but not enough to become mainstream yearly iteration. if any good game become mainstream. chances are it will become bad. and dumbed down.

I don't care what a game is, mainstream or niche, and neither dictates anything.

What I object to are mechanics or game dynamics being watered down to appeal to the lowest common denominator in striving for the broadest appeal and market penetration possible. I find that to be a selling out of the creative process to the almighty dollar, and it happens all too often. But there are very mainstream titles (EA Sports) that are incredibly mechanically prohibitive to a larger market yet still penetrate into mainstream appeal due to their content. The label really doesn't mean nor necessitate much.

It doesn't concern me the demographics that "my" games occupy in marketshare, as long as they retain some integrity in their creative vision and don't compromise themselves towards capital gains to the point of detriment.

Just go out and ask any random person on street.

ask about Metro and they call a tunnel, ask about Mafia and they call criminal organizations and although Doom is more known since its oldest 3D game franchise but still more people know COD and BF over Doom.

none of them are mainstream.

I really don't care. At all. The only correlate of being "mainstream" that I am behind is I want good games to be financially "successful" -> the dev is doing this for a living as well as (hopefully) their passion, and I hope they actually achieve an appropriate compensation for their time on the game.

Was this a cross over from multiple PR series?
