Poll Do you think you will have to rebuy the PS5 versions of games? (57 votes)

Yes 54%
No( it will just need a free patch) 40%
No( but you will have to pay an upgrade fee for the patch.) 11%

This is an interesting question that I can't seem to find the answer to. With games like Control, Cyberpunk 2077, TLOU2, GoT and Death Stranding coming out do you think those who buy a PS5 will get all the benefits with a free patch or do you think Sony will be greedy bastards and make you rebuy the game. I personally will wait for the PS5 to buy all these games if that's the case.

So what do you think?

They should all work via BC. I personally don't think Sony would patch or remaster BC games for free, because they haven't done that this gen. Think they'll just be upscaled, or run smoother.

The PlayStation 5 will be backwards compatible, do no.

Knowing Sony, yes; Ps5 and Ps4 will run completely different disks. But even so, I think Ps4 looks more than good enough that I won't even feel the need to buy games twice on Ps5. Let Ps4 games be for Ps4 and let Ps5 games be for Ps5. None of that cross-generation bulllshit.

PS5 will be backwards compatible so your PS4 disk should run just fine. Of course the PS5 version will look better but it's essentially the same game. The choice is yours if you want to rebuy but I'll opt out of that option. I ain't rebuying sh*t after spending all those shekels on a PS5 lol

They expect this every time. I'm sure Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU 2 will run like crap on PS4 hardware so you can buy remastered editions on PS5.

Of course we will. *maybe* they will give free BC, but that's not the same thing as getting the PS5 version, and I think there's no way they will give that away free. Why would they?

It's not like it's a PC... (sorry, had to for SW :-P)

Yeah, in this case, I think they'll just be free patches. PS5 will be backwards compatible so new versions would be silly.

PS5 versions? Yes. The PS5 will be BC, so those with the PS4 game or access to a second-hand market will be fine.

It's gonna be a Remaster Vs. BC thing. They'll release remasters that take specific advantage of the hardware, with upgraded resolution/textures/etc... If Sony implements something like MS did with Xbox One upgrades for 360/Xbox titles, the lines could become a little muddy.

I think many here don't understand the question. He is asking whether you think you'll get a free copy of the PS5 version of a very likely cross-gen game if you already own the PS4 version, which is different than being able to play the PS4 version of the game on your PS5 through BC.

I'm pretty sure you'll have to rebuy the game, but you'll most likely be able to play the older version through BC. It all comes down to whether you feel the visual upgrade is worth it.

@Arkhalipso: That was basically my takeaway. MS has put the pressure on with free BC with upgrades, but we'll see how they both address this next-gen. MS clearly did this for good-will, and it worked. Sony may have the upper-hand with marketing a "remaster" as they've not set the precedent.

Most likely yes if you want "enhanced" versions of these games (4k res, 60FPS, better textures, etc). Thats why i havent bought RDR2 yet - Waiting for the inevitable PS5 version. Same goes with Last of us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.

No. I don't think there will even be a patch. The PS5 will act as the PS4.

Sony is definitely going to sell you guys The Last of Us 2 Remastered within 12 months of The Last of Us 2's release.

They'll probably even do a bundle pack with The Last of Us: Definitive Edition (PS5).

Sony typically only releases 1 major game every 1-2 years, so you can be certain that most of their PS5 lineup will be remastered PS3 and PS4 games.

@valgaav_219: Why would the PS5 version look better? only if the developer goes in and remasters the game would it look better unless you're talking about games that use a dynamic scale and even then it won't "look" better.

Devs will patch the games to run at higher res/fps on PS5 (it will be like PS4 vs PS4Pro, instead of PS3 vs PS4). If Sony will decide to charge people for this and they just accept it, then the console gamers are even dumber than I thought.

I suspect Sony will charge again. I used to think its fair due to the upgrades, but given what Microsoft has done this generation with some of the Xbox 360 games such as Final Fantasy (lighting ones) where they have been enhanced, i think they should be free.

Like the PS3 to PS4 Gen it will be up to the developers/Publishers.

Some of them offered them for free.

Some of them offered a $10 upgrade fee.

Some of them just made a new version.

So the answer is Yes and No.

Why will Microsoft not make you? Unless they keep the One branding and have the disc identical, but then its going to be awkward finding out what games work on the original one and which don't as the gen matures. I doubt devs are going to limit what can be achieved on new consoles, as it will require more than just some low settings the One is really underpowered at this point.

I think we are at a point when you buy a license for a game, you should be able to use that across your whole account.

Still... I voted yes. Sony gets super arrogant and anti-consumer when they are on top.

I'm hoping Microsoft can get consumers used to the idea of play-anywhere to the point where they will complain more when they don't have it.

C'mon guys. You gotta complain more.

At this point we're basically talking about how you can play computer games on many different computers. It's gonna be the same hardware architecture, same PSN account, same everything. Just suck it up, Sony and make it so. I'm sick of all this BS we have to go through on consoles. Time for some QoL improvements. Way past due.

It's a tough one because it's backwards compatible apparently. I wouldn't be surprised if they release definitive versions for PS5 though.

Unless the frame-rate is poor, won't care. Just get a cheaper game basically.

If a game's good it's good, simple as that.

PS4 games will have faster load times on PS5 at least that is what is being advertised. If you are questioning if PlayStation will release a PS4 version of a game and then a PS5 version later on then yes they could possibly do that, but it is entirely up to you to only buy it one time.

If you already own a PS4 version of which ever game then there is no point of buying PS5 remastered.

Well better wait for their next installment in the series.

This is wise.

Those saying the PS5 will be backward compatible.. ok, sure that's true. However, if you want to play the PS5 version of the game you will almost undoubtedly have to pay.

This should be echoed for all those in the back row. Nintendo absolutely will do this -- also full price. Microsoft will for the xbox two versions of games as well.

Difference is that Sony and MS *could* potentially offer cross-buy, as Sony has done with many games as well as MS.

For sure man. Those cross console games will be HUGE money for all three of them. They aren't just going to leave it on the table. There will be millions that don't have the means or simply don't want to upgrade at launch, but all of their friends that do will buy those games again so they can still play together, but they get the better experience.

It will be backwards compatible, so no. If there is a PS5 remaster of a certain game then I am guessing owning the previous version will not grant you a new copy much like Switch re-releases of games.

In the grand scheme of things, yes. But, that's how these companies milk money from you. I mean, look at how Nintendo does it. I'd say that's more extreme than MS and Sony milking.
