Do you think Konami will find a way to get us MGS 4 on modern consoles?

So we know MGS 3 is getting a remake and the previous games (through MGS 3) are coming to modern consoles as a 'Volume 1' collection. But that leaves the question of MGS 4. I played this game again this year and it's still awesome. It even looks really good for its age (haha). But will Konami find a way to give us a MGS 4 remaster? I really hope so. Otherwise, what is Volume 2? MGS 5/Ground Zeroes and Survive?? What do you think, SW?

Digital Foundry talked about this one their DF Weekly and John said regarding is it possible? The answer is nope! Possible maybe? PS3 was basically an alien console due to the Cell as MGS4 was build from the ground up on it, it is nearly impossible to port it from PS3. Only way I could see it come to current-gen if they start from the ground up on a new engine (Fox Engine) is all I can see it come to fruition.

Dunno. Would be nice, as I played again recently on PC (no PS3) and it was pretty glitchy graphically in spots.

MGS 4 had great gameplay and production value. But those cutscenes ruined the game. Act 3 was a cutscene.

Mean, it's a game publisher, if there is some lazy as possible, easy way to bleed money, they will do it.

Don’t know but I would certainly like to see that happen. Really enjoyed the game on the PS3.

@gotgames: I remember my wife was trying to get me to go somewhere with her and a cutscene began. I told her right after this scene, and the movie was like 70 minutes long. It was insane. She started timing it and couldn't believe they made a game with a cutscene that long.

I think if mgs 3 is a success why wouldn't they remake mgs, mgs2 and mgs4 in the same way.

@eni232: They should. Only reason I think MGS3 is first is because they remade all the cutscenes for a damn pachinko machine.

They could if they wanted, they won't because they're afraid if it has to go through a new round of reviews that people will call out that bullshit for what was once declared such a stellar experience as a disgusting indulgence of boring, horribly written cutscenes with the briefest intermission of lackluster gameplay. Better they just let people think they remember it being better than it was.

The Playstation 3 still sells is why. You buy a Ps3 for games like metal gear solid 4. Besides that and a few others like dragon age. You gotta have a reason to buy a Ps3. Retro game sales.

@TheHighWind:

Pretty sure Sony stopped selling PS3s like 6 or 7 years ago.

And just in general, companies prefer selling ports and remasters on newer systems, more money in that. MGS4 is the odd one out in this case. Certainly not their ace in the hole to keep moving systems lol. Especially not in a used market where they don't see a cent.

Fine go ahead and ignore the whole retro game market. You know I could go on amazon and buy a new one.

Just to make sure we're on the same page here.

You believe Sony has an agreement with Konami to keep MGS4 exclusive to the PS3. Because... Sony cares about PS3s shifting around in a 2nd hand market that they see zero profit from?

I'd assume it's in the works... the announced collection is volume 1 .... seems logical that 4 would be in volume 2.

I assume then they'll announce an MGS5 remake... because why the f not

I expect we'll eventually see it get a remaster come to modern platforms in the next ~5 years.

I do think it's possible to build a version RPCS3 for Xbox or PS5 right now tho if someone wants a challenge.

The only way they could do it is to ship the game with an add in card with a cell broadband engine (no peasant process here) and 256MB of RD Ram (which is still the very best, most state of the art ram to have existed and will be for all time). Of course it would have to be PC exclusive that way...no PS5 or XSX would be able to run it since they lack TEH CELL. /s

In all seriousness though I don't think Konami will because they couldn't be bothered. They are not that kind of company any more. It's certainly technically possible to get the game up and running. It could be done through emulation or they could rebuild the game on a new engine (which wouldn't be cheap mind).

It's more a lack of business will rather than any technical boundry though and Konami these days are...well that are they?

At this point I think a remake would be more likely and I hope it happens because it's a damn shame this gem is stuck on the PS3.

It can be done with emulation. A modern PC can run MGS4 on an emulator just fine for the most part. It improves the resolution and frame rate... but it still has some emulation bugs here and there. The only investment Konami would need to make is fix up the emulation bugs.

I didn't know it was possible on PC to play it so that's new to me on the PS3 emulation. Konami did put out a survey asking fans if they really want MGS4 Remake though.

I also love MGS4 as well since it was the game at the time took adventage of the Cells when Kojima was still around and felt like he pushed the PS3 to its limits. If it does get the Remake treatment, I would've prefer the Fox Engine but hey, Decima Engine is fine by me.

@davillain: Well the Fox Engine was released in 2015 (or perhaps earlier). Have we even seen it used after MGS5? Which looked great 8 years ago, but it was 60 fps on base last gen consoles and even ran on PS3/X360 hardware.

Decima Engine is arguably the best engine out there right now. Horizon Forbidden West is still the best looking game I have ever seen. MGS4 at HFW's fidelity would be insane.

But of course if Konami make a new an improved engine (Fox 2.0? Foxhound Engine? Snake Engine?) for its remakes that would be great.

@TheHighWind:

Alright brother, I concede.

Sony and Konami have a secret long term agreement to keep MGS4 exclusive to Playstation 3. This way, Sony can ensure that an infinitesimal amount of people will continue to seek out PS3s from 2nd hand sellers to play MGS4.

Sounds like something written by the man himself, Kojima does it again!

And even if they did - The idea that MGS4 is still moving PS3s 15 years on? To a degree that major companies like Sony and Konami would actually give a shit? 😂

The whole premise is so silly. Not trying to dogpile the guy, just weird that he kept doubling down on this idea.

Clearly a port or remaster would be more profitable than this imaginary situation of a corp scraping a percent off 2nd hand.

I think if remakes of the other solid games are succesful, it could happen. I actually love MGS4 and I think out of all the games, it has the most potential for a remake. Becuase if you remake MGS4, making the different settings expanded open worlds would work really well. I think you could add tons of content and have it work with the story by having tons of missions for Snake to take on from the various factions to get the necessary intel to find where Liquid Ocelot is rather than it just being a straight path.

Also, the sort of open world stealth systems of MGSV could fit in so much better in the MGS4 setting. Stuff like seeing tagged enemies through walls; that could actually be explained as his Solid Eye getting tracking data from SOP.

@davillain: They could possibly write an emulator to get it working on current gen consoles.

To digress a bit, I really don't see how the juice was worth the squeeze with the Emotion Engine and the CELL Broadband CPU.

Neither the PS2 or the PS3 could easily do anything of note that the competition couldn't and now all this time later and those CPUs are still a cause of headaches.

A smart move on Sony's part might be to collaborate on a Mgs4 Remake with full exclusivity.

They actually got MGS4 running well on the Xbox 360, but the issue was with DVDs.

They would have to completely remake the game. It ran on the cell which was a nightmare to program for, and is not something that can be easily ported from. I am not sure Konami would spend the money on this, but I could see Sony funding it to make it happen and putting one of their port studios on it. Maybe Bluepoint since they have experience getting a port off ps3 architecture and upgrading the graphics.

They could release it in 3 parts like Final Fantasy VII.
