Poll Do you prefer Zelda BOTW or the Witcher 3 (109 votes)

Zelda BOTW 57%
Witcher 3 43%

I recently got a Switch Lite and I've been playing on Zelda BOTW. Both very impressive and similar in many ways. Just curious which do you prefer?

Seems like the wrong subforum but anyway, if you have other platform alongside switch get Witcher 3. If you only has switch go with whatever you like.

All 2 games are an absolute masterpiece, I like everyone of them and each provide a unique experience on each platform for me (TW3 on PC, BOTW on Switch and RDR2 on PS4) but ultimately even with the 2 newer games’ releases, i still find myself playing the Witcher 3 in my spare time. There’s just something about it that keeps me coming. I never felt my love for video games surge back like it did when I first

Combat wise, Zelda. My main gripe wit =h Zelda is how fast weapons break. The story is better in Witcher 3, but I can;'t stand the combat in the game. (Same with Witcher 1 and 2, the combat was awful)

If I could choose just one, it would be BotW.

Witcher 3 because it has lore and narrative.

Both are pretty average when it comes to gameplay. I probably put at least 100 hours into both.

Still waiting for the next proper Zelda games since Twilight Princess.

From a gameplay standpoint, BotW blows TW3 away, but i'll still take TW3 over it because of that excellent story.

Definitely The Witcher 3 for me. It's one of the only long, story-driven RPG's that I didn't mind playing a second time. Usually when I beat a game that took me 100+ hours to beat I'll never play it again. Choices that have an actual impact on the story and multiple endings give it replay value and encourage you to play it again and make different choices.

TW3 = way better stories and character development

BOTW = physics and way better world interactions

Both great sense of exploration, but with a different flavor due to the above

BOTW combat mechanics are abysmal, I don't know how people are arguing its better than TW3 above. It's about as bad as I've ever seen in any game involving combat of any genre. What IS good (indeed, AMAZING and industry leading) is the emergent gameplay including - but not specific to - combat. That is, you can make your own fun with combat, thanks to the physics system and interactive environment. But that's desperately despite the awkward hop-along button thwapping, which is absolutely elementary and nothing but frustrating.

Definitely Witcher 3. I just couldn't get into BotW... it was too big/empty for me & had a number of things that annoyed me (ie. breaking weapons etc). In terms of a Zelda game, I got much more enjoyment out of Link's Awakening remake.

I played both and enjoy but Witcher 3 is beyond an awesome action-adventure game I personally invest, so Witcher 3 takes this victory.

Same. Objectively, it's a fantastic game, but I absolutely loathe it. I found the level design in particular absolutely atrocious. The amount of times I got lost on basic paths was insane.

@xantufrog: What’s so bad about the BOTW combat? It’s functional, isn’t floaty, has a decent set of moves and flows nicely without having enemies that are too predictable like in The Witcher 3.

Breath of the Wild. While the combat and enemy roster can be better it at least allows for some inventive shenanigans. The Witcher 3 is just shallow all the way through.

The exploration and n stuff goes to Zelda and it isn’t even close. So many of the question marks on the map in Witcher 3 were unsatisfying, especially the ones in skelliga with how many are in the water.

@Juub1990: if it had a more effective dodge and/or roll, and better tools for reorienting to an opponent in melee as they move about it would be so much less awkward. For me, it feels ridiculously clunky and primitive, like something I played in the early 90s, but it's saved by the fantastic range of environmental things you can do to not just spice things up but also get out of jams.

Idk, maybe I just suck at its "finer points" :-p

Ignoring those shitty stealth missions, I prefer Witcher 2 over The Witcher 3.

The gameplay in all of them is quite jank, the first being borderline unplayable. But The Witcher 2 generally has better pacing, much prefer the level design.

Let's not get carried away. I said the Witcher 3 is shallow, not a straight up fucking mess of a game. The Witcher 3 at least, at the fucking least, gets the basics of what you want a good combat system to have. It just fucks up on the details that stop it from really singing. But The Witcher 2 is abhorrent at how many things it fucks up in terms of combat, and the less said about where this franchise started in terms of combat with Witcher 1 the better.

I am a long time Zelda fan and didn't really care much for TW1&2 like some reviewers did. However, I felt like Breath of the Wild tampered with the Zelda formula to the point where it wasn't even Zelda anymore. Also, it has a rather empty open world when compared to other games like The Witcher 3. I didn't find it as enjoyable as The Witcher personally.

@R4gn4r0k: I have only played it on the handheld mode. It runs very well, i have not encountered any slow down.

I think it might slow down when connected to the TV (from memory from watching a Digital Foundary video).

@kadin_kai: I bought an OG switch, but I don't plan on hooking it up to a TV. Inreally like playing on a handheld :D

So I was wondering: how does it feel playing this grand open world game on a handheld? Do you ever wish you could play it on a TV?

For some bizarre reason, most games on the Switch, including those specifically developed for it do not take into account the change of screen size like the 3DS did with it's easy to read block text. I had to play it docked because I literally couldn't read shit. And my eyes (while not great) are pretty far from being blind, so I can only imagine how worse it would be for other people.

This is definitely something reviewers should have picked up on, instead, par the course, too busy licking boots along with all the other fanboys.

Haven't even played W3 and can say BotW with certainty.

As someone who played it both handheld and on the TV, both are great. TV was great, since it was a big beautiful world on a big TV, and I could use the superior Pro controller. Handheld was great beacause playing such a huge game on a freaking handheld kinda blows your mind. Game looks and plays wonderfully however you play.

Playing the game at home, then take it with you somewhere and continue felt awesome and more "next gen" than the PS4 or Xbox One ever did.

@SolidGame_basic: Maybe the honeymoon phase with it is over? BOTW took a while to grow on some especially with the shitiness of open-world games released after it. Makes you appreciate it that much more.

Oh god, you just made me remember the early days of playing the Xbox 360 on my SDTV.

My brother had an HDTV and I could use his Xbox 360, but I still had an SDTV:

I couldn't read text in games, it was just way too small and unclear. Games were advertised as being "playable in SD", but it sure as hell wasn't the same experience. Couldn't read ****.

@R4gn4r0k: Yes sometimes I wish I could play it on my living room TV. But the low resolution textures and overall low resolution of the game may not look so good on a large screen.

I have only done 40 Shrines, but I think I prefer BOTW over TW3.

The games really aren't comparable. The Witcher 3 is primarily a traditional quest driven RPG whereas Breath of the Wild is more of an open-ended sandbox game.
