Do we consider Portal a better series than LOU and Unch?

My friends, I've recently replayed 20 seconds of Portal 2 to see if it had ambient occlusion on in nvidia inspector. And I must beg the question, is Portal a better designed and in general, superior series to pretty much all of Naughty Dogs recent titles? I can't find any flaws in these titles, they seem what experts would deem "masterpieces". Yet when I play Uncharted 2 i keep seeing jaggies and the AI keeps fucking breaking in Last Of Us.

Because graphics are the only thing which makes games great?

Portal 2 I never got to finish. I hate personification and I think the whole robot with personality and AI voice is creepy. The game is collecting dust in my steam account

Valve just gave Left4dead 2 away (which includes Leftdead 1) for nothing. Truly, these are the greatest developers in the world.

I'd much rather have a Naughty Dag title than I had a Valve title. Valve hasn't made a truly amazing game in years.

Eh Portal is okay, it's pretty funny and has some interesting mechanics but wears thin by the end, which is saying something given that it's only 2 hours long.

Uncharted and TLOU are much better games.

Why are people so desperate against Naughty Dogs? People compare these 2 games to just about anything they can think of, regardless of how unrelated the comparisons are. How is Portal even remotely similar to Uncharted besides puzzle which aren't even similar at all except that they're puzzles?

What's next? We going to compare Uncharted 2 to Forza 5?

Maybe. In the end it depends on the person WHO plays the games I think, I can not put a finger on the portal games, for what they are, and aim for, they are pretty darn good.

I never cared much for uncharted, and TloU is a game that somehow had so many small annoyances for me, that I never finished it.

That said, from a purely objective standpoint both uncharted and TLoU is very good games, they might even be the better games, however I am not that sure of it, but I am fairly sure that they are on the same level despite not liking those games as much as most people does.

um no portal was good but it was like playing a tech demo

Portal is actually an overrated series. Its premise is interesting but the puzzles are so easy and the environments are so bland and repetitive that I was kinda bored halfway through Portal 2. Portal 1 was very short and more of a tech demo than an actual game per se. Great characters is all Portal has going for it imho

But it's the greatest game ever made. And way better than any game you like.

Whats "real content"/ Good writing? Excellent level design? Universal appeal? Innovative gameplay?

I think the Portal series is better than most.

It's how games should be made.

Not like those cutscene-infested, set-piece riddled, cinematic experiences that the mainstream overvalues.

One of my favorite games last gen was Portal.

Unique yet simple yet funny yet brilliant ... It was awesome but it cant compete vs Uncharted 2 imho because the last feels more complete as an experience.

About TLOU i dont know whats the case about it still havent played it.

Portal 1 is excellent. Do I think either of Naughty Dog's games are as good as the original Portal? not really. Would I rather play Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us over Portal 2? Yep.

I'd pick Portal and Portal 2 over Last of Us and Uncharted 3 any day. Uncharted 2 is the only fairly recent ND game that give the Portal series a run for it's money.

I enjoyed Portal, both of them... but no way have I ever considered whether Uncharted or LOU was better because they're very different.....

However, nothing touches Last of Us in my humble opinion. Story, game play, graphics, dialogue... it's all there.

Your question is a blasphemy. What did ND do compare to Valve? Copy/Paste Mario? QTE fest onrails linear experience riddled UC? Every single Vavlve product bring something new to the table and is more fun. Valve's impact on a gaming industry is much bigger than ND's or for that matter most studio's will ever be.

Because Playstation has better franchises than MS apart from the Remedy games. MS doesn't even worth the effort.

Valve managed to make puzzle games, a genre usually occupied by indie games, that are funny, engaging and have good pacing. ND made a few alright third person action games, probably the most risk-adverse genre in AAA gaming, with solid production values that contain minimal substance and innovation from a game design standpoint that people seem to go crazy over for reasons that are totally beyond me.

@zeeshanhaider: I agree that Valves impact on the industry is far greater than Naughty Dogs but you say ND's games are linear, so are all of valves games...

I was more entertained with Portal 1 & 2. Funny stuff right there.

Being linear isn't the problem. Linear QTE fest 'Press X to win' Onrails experience is which is the 90% of what ND produces.

The last of us was pretty challenging. I dunno they both create different experiences which is always a good thing :) . Also OP why complain about AA now when it's been a problem for the previous gen for pretty much its entirety.

Portal was awesome. Portal 2 was even better.

Portal 2 is certainly much more creative and innovative then TLOU and Uncharted. However as much as I enjoy Portal I love TLOU and Uncharted a lot more. Most of the time when I look for games I look for the ones with the best narratives. Portal 2's story is very good but when the main character doesn't speak it kind of limits where it can go story wise.

Portal is definitely more influential and important series as a whole, but better? Hard to say, because those are puzzle games, which is something radically different from action games like Uncharted or TLoU
