Do gamers today seem to generally have low standards?

Seems like a lot of gamers are really forgiving towards major flaws in games. Rockstar games get away with clunky controls, and repetitive missions. Uncharted games are 50% tediously climbing and jumping around linear paths and by the numbers storytelling. These are considered among the greatest games of recent years.

absolutely. Rockstar has been one of the most overrated developer in history and thier games gameplay wise are too clunky.

I have an open mind when it comes to games I like playing such as GTAV. I never think about the controls are clunky when I play it on PC, so it get's a pass.

I've been accused of having low standards, but I don't care! I don't play games for other people, I play games for me and my own enjoyment! As long as I am enjoying the game, I don't care if other people think I have high standards, low standards, whatever. Their opinions on standards don't matter to me because they aren't me and that's all their is to it!

Judging by how the ps4 and Switch are selling. Yes, gamers have low standards. The ps4 has an awful controller, horrible network, and specializes in casual single player games. The Switch lacks relevant power, 3rd party support, and a network no where near today’s standards brought forth by their competitors. The Switch does have some decent software so it makes for a good back up system. But if it’s your only gaming outlet - my sympathies.

PC or X1X is the way to go this gen. Most power, best controller, and robust online performance. It’s no competition if you’re anything near a serious gamer.

PC and Nintendo fanboys have incredibly low standards.

The Nintendo fanboy just wants to play the same Nintendo games every 5 years. They aren’t even real gamers. They are casuals. They refuse to play anything else and just hand out 10/10’s to nintendo games even though the quality is not there.

They are still making N64 type games with no textures or anything good. Hell, most switch games are at 480i-720p with a handful at 900p and most of them stutter or have screen tearing.

As for PC fanboys, they enjoy terrible MOBA’s, outdated RTS games, MMO’s which are boring... god, it’s just sad being a PC gamer to enjoy such mind numbing boring “gameplay”.

Every exclusive game on PC is just trash when it comes to gameplay.

Lol...no. You should have seen some of the games that I grew up on. Kung Fu was one of my favorite games growing up and talk about repetitive.

People always seem to turn their noses up at good games and praise shit and that'll probably keep on going. At lea st they always claim to have standards.

Its just like back in the day, dumb kids would buy terrible games.

Today's version of that is people who buy Rage 2, play Fortnite, and casually play sports games.

It's like Metal/Rock music, 20 years ago, they were mainstream and award winning acts. But now music is completely different. Of course like Metal, lots of old timers ain't gate keeping and encouraging new gen. Games like Cuphead give me hope.

Maybe. Not to a great extent. Red Dead Redemption 2 got an 8.0 because people do critique how slow it is. Grand Theft Auto V got an 8.3 because of the MTX and the focus on online mode and all that. People are critiquing these games for their known problems and rating them somewhat accordingly I think?

I don't think they are considered the greatest games of the past years by gamers. By critics maybe. Very good games, yes, but there are some games rated higher by the users. I do worry sometimes that there are more gamers every day who have never experienced games without MTX systems in them.

In my opinion, most people who play games are casual gamers. They do not chase after the trophies or complete every single side mission available or seek out Easter eggs.

If you compare the movement in GTAV to MGS5, Snake runs around so quickly and never gets tired. He can virtually run through Afghanistan in 15 minutes.

Games like Uncharted/Gears/Tomb Raider/MGS/Splinter Cell/Assassins Creed are the equivalent of a summer action blockbusters. They are designed so it’s not too hard and most people who play it will complete it. They are entertaining rather than challenging and that’s why they sell so well.

Games such as the “Souls” type of games are very hard to play and the developers know they are aiming at certain players (more hardcore), those people who do chase after all the side missions, the Easter eggs and max out their characters.

I think there is a a great variety of games out there. There will always be more mass market blockbuster games rather than games that demand a substantial amount of your time.

A good example of this again is Forza and GT games, they sell much more than Project Racing.

Yeah that's why games like Doom 4 ad DMC 5 get high scores even though that their level design is pretty awful.

It's all generalizations, but it seems today's gamers are big on video, small on game....

Last gen it was 90% and over or nothing for lemmings,this gen games like Ryse,sea of thieves and crackdown excite them.

Why the fu** would i want and xbox if i can have a PC? Is totally redundant as on PC i get all xbox exclusives + tons of exclusives not find on xbox,free online play and true 4k.

You know what the best thing about this is? That this thread is about low standard you just can't get lower than xbox this gen.

Basically is the least sold platform year by year (the switch should pass it this year world wide without problems) is the consoles with lowest rated games,and it basically exclusive less and the only 1 of the big 3 that is actually Redundant if you have a PC.

Even if graphics,the best controller and best network are on xbox,still will mean shit when it lack exclusives to justify its existence you can get the xbox experience with better graphics,control and free online on PC.

That is funny the best rated games this gen are not PC exclusives are all.

It's not like they don't have options. Great games are out there, you've just got to look past the McDonald's menu.

My personal favorite games over the last half decade or so have rarely come from AAA developers. I'll take Kerbal Space Program or even Banished over any AAA game made this generation.

Are we including mobile gamers who mostly play games like candy rush? If so then maybe.

If we're comparing console/handheld generations. I'm not sure. Games are becoming homogenized so they might have more mechanics in newer games but it somehow feels like a copout of being a "better game".

It can be subjective too. My parents may think that FamiCom Mario, Duckhunt, Battlecity are better than Total War, Halo, Uncharted, DMC, etc though they are mechanically more basic.

@rzxv04: Being more basic doesn't mean lower in quality tbh. Super Mario Bros may be basic but it functions well and doesn't waste you're time with padding.

Not sure about other gamers, but my standards were never as high as they are today.

I grew up playing $50 games that could be completed in 30 minutes, $100 for games like Virtua Racing on megadrive or Star Wars Arcade on 32X which had close to no content, that same price for N64 games running at 10fps, etc, etc.

Thing is, games are infinitely better and more polished these days, so i don't think it's that surprising the fact some people actually enjoy them...

Only those who like games that I don’t like. My tastes are impeccable. :P
