Believe or not the real problem with sims is they are not very realistic... No seriously, they can simulate all the options and setting and visual effects very well but when its time to simulate the actual driving everything turns to shit... The cars honestly don't behave all that realistically.
DiRT 3 is alil different.... Its simulates the most important part of Rally, the actual handling and behavior of the cars in motion on various surfaces. This is something Forza 4 and GT4 was also missing, the simulated all the wrong things 1st.
Sure. They might not be full hardcore sims, but stuff like Forza of GT is definitely closer to sim than arcade. The simulation genre has wide range in it even on PC. Games like Strike Commander were stll counted as sims despite being a lot simplier than Falcon 3.0
Also..wasn't Richard Burns Rally released on consoles? That's still by far the most realistic rally game.
And there was much "multiplat" wailing among the ranks of the peasants, but lo, it was not to be, and thus their overlords rejoiced, in their banquet halls, at PC superiority once again made manifest.
PCs will continue as vanguard into the 4k future leaving the peasants to grovel in their wake.
Keep telling yourselves that 30 fps and < 1080p are sufficient for the games of 2014, peasants...

If you want real go rent a few cars and bring them to a track. In regards to gaming and trying to create an authentic fun racing experience I believe consoles and PC's have done so.
No system has car sims. Car sims cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
sounds cheap compared to video game development
I don't think that would cover the cost of development, just actual production. I was just guessing anyways, but I would not be surprised if billions have been invested over the last 30 years.
Fanboys should stop reading here, I'm going to say some truths here that you may not want to hear.
Short answer is yes. It depends on a lot of factors though. First what are you trying to simulate, just driving or actual racing? PC Sims are more advanced in simulating the racing aspects (qualifying, racing rules, fuel management, etc.) but physics wise the actual driving in console sims is close enough to the real thing to be relevant. In fact when paired with the Thrustmaster TX Forza 5 is just as good (if not better) than anything in this department, regardless of the platform. The equipment you use though has a lot to do with this. The better your setup the more realistic it will be. Racing on your couch with a Dual Shock controller is about as close to a sim as playing with one of these in your backyard:
However when you start looking at things like this you can get a serious sim experience from a console (minus the racing aspects I mentioned previously):
All we really need now is a way to simulate G-forces and depth of vision. Advances in 3D technology as well as things like the Oculus could change the depth of vision problem soon, but we may never be able to properly simulate the G-forces without attaching a military grade simulator rig to a roller coaster. Simple motion can already be done (on PC's and with special rigs like what Forza uses at trade shows) but it is more like a 3D ride at Universal Studios were it uses small movements in combination with what you see on screen to trick into thinking you are moving, it isn't recreating the G-forces.
And there was much "multiplat" wailing among the ranks of the peasants, but lo, it was not to be, and thus their overlords rejoiced, in their banquet halls, at PC superiority once again made manifest.

Lol, you really told off all those peasants! Look at you, laughing at people who enjoy their games while your superior PC ushers us into the future:) You're awesome and cool!
If GTR2 and iRacing are the bar, GT and Forza fall drastically short. They are car porn games. The only game I've played on consoles that gets close to something like GTR2 is RacePro, which is by the same developers.
well they DO take gamers who are the best of the best from Gran Turismo and turn them into professional drivers, so I'd say it's an effective enough sim.

Where do you get that crap? Even IF true it wouldn't be because they're good at that arcade racer GT.
The most realistic SIM I've ever played were the Nascar series from Papyrus. Real racers used to practice with those sims. Nothing on a console has EVER touched those games.

it's called GT academy and there's a few different versions of it. Nissan I know typically runs the American competition and I know they've got versions of it for other countries.
here's one of many videos you can watch about it all. they're plenty good at racing.

So is it like the console version OR did they actually turn it into a SIM?

they take people who are good at Gran Turismo and see who is the best. Take a handful of them. then they let them all drive in cars at Silverstone and eventually pick a driver each year (1 from all participating regions) and that winner of GT Academy joins the team. From then on, they're officially a professional driver. They race at things like Le Mans, Nurburgring, and other various locations and events around the globe.
The GT Academy does a good job weeding out shit drivers and I think it is cool that they give people the opportunity to become professional drivers...but it is nothing more than a publicity stunt. It could be done in any game.
In 25 years from now, when all of the games you mentioned are archaic and do not accurately represent anything close, then have you ever really played a sim game? The answer would be no.

Are you implying that visuals are the only thing that is important in a sim, because it would seem to me that none of those videos discuss things that would actually matter to people in these types of game.

Perhaps thats the purpose of a simulation.... Its to give not to be accurate but to be Complicated and Abstract as hell with a bunch of Numbers and Stats.... Atleast thats the impression I got.

Tears.
I'd say it feels good to destroy your argument, but in reality, it required such little effort that it barely gave me a smile.

At least with flight sims, some are accurate enough for procedures training in the real world. Take FSX for example. It's especially useful in providing scenarios for practicing procedures. Flight sims have limitations because they can't model "feel" obviously. But, they are useful in other areas.
