I do, i compare every game I play to MGS4 regardless what genre they are in. This doesn't stop me from enjoying a game but reminds me how good MGS4 was...

that's just really REALLY weird

how can you compare say like a puzzle game to MGS4 and justify that at all? lol

no way i don't do that.....i don't even like comparing games with other games of it's own kind, i judge it based on what IT has and only IT

If I compared every game I played to RE4, 98% of them would look embarassingly inferior. The other 2% would simply look inferior.

no, not usually, but I do compare games made by same developers... for example, RDR and GTA etc. I think its only natural...

I compare games of the same genre, or the same developer, or games that have something in common.

I can compare Prince of Persia to Enslaved, but I can't compare Bayonetta to Killzone 2 or something.

I do compare sports games even if they are not the same sport. For example, I can tell you that the NHL series has better commentators and overall gameplay than any other sports series, IMO.

And comparing everything to OoT would be pointless. :)

Only if they're of the same genre. I wouldn't compare Unreal Tournament 2004 to Just Cause or Microsoft Flight Sim, for example, but I would to something like Doom.

When it comes time for me to put my review on GS I pretty much do, yes. In a more general sense though as often times the game is nothing like the other. I think, does this game deserve an 8.5 or a 9.0? Then you can help solidify that answer with other games (such as your favorite) and remember why those were so good, and why this one is great but lacking, so it is an 8.5 :P

Well, for instance i can compare portals (a puzzle game) visuals, sense of humor and originality to MGS4 quite easily...

Not necessarily I do however compare it to some of my favorite games in the genre. If I play a beat em up/hack n slash type game(say Enslaved or Heavenly Sword). It's being compared to a God Hand or a Bayonetta or a Ninja Gaiden or a Devil May Cry or whatever you to some extent. That said so long as what the game does what it does well it won't be much of a problem. In the end the comparing is just for semantics and **** like "WHERE WOULD I RANK THIS IN THE PANTHEON OF X GENRE"

Kinda, at least within the FPS genre. Everytime I play a good FPS, I at one point this, 'this is good, but it isn't Stalker'.

No, not always, maybe only with games in the same genre (Adventure for OoT and JRPG for Chrono Trigger).

If something is as good as Shadow of The Colossus, I'll be damned. Otherwise, I just stick to comparing games to those in their genres and their predecessors.

No. I compare each game only to the experience is provides to me and, in a sense, to other similar games. For example, it is hard not to compare platformers to Mario in some way, or arcadey racing games to Burnout, which I love. But I don't play Red Dead Redemption and keep thinking about how it compares to Uncharted 2 or Silent Hill 2. They are totally different experiences.

I'll compare it to my favourite game in that genre. E.g., I would compare FIFA 11 to PES 6 whilst I would compare Red Dead Redemption to GTA San Andreas.

My favorite game of all time is Morrowind. If I compared every game to Morrowind, my standards would be so low for everything except atmosphere and exploration.

Never. I always judge a game based on its own merits. I don't know why anyone would colour their perceptions of games like that. You are playing games for the wrong reasons if you go into another game expecting it to match or exceed a game you've put on a pedestal.

Not unless its similar in terms of genre or gameplay. The only comparing I ever really do for games is "Would I rather play this one or that one?"

No, I don't because it would be silly. I may compare a game to the favorite game played within the same genre, that's about it.

No. Since that would put me into my head remembering my favorite game rather than presently enjoying what I am playing. I see no reason to compare games.

No only if it was in the same genre of my favorite game of all time because standards change and if it looks and plays worse then my favorite game of all time then their is a problem with that game.

Half so. It kinda sucks, I take my favorite game out of a genre and it's always compared to that game.

Ie, I compare all FPS's against Battlefield 2 and all RPG's to the Witcher.

Not really. I might compare it to my favorite game in a genre, but really my favorite game of all time is a toss-up between five games and it could change at any point in time from Metroid Prime, Diablo II, Halo: Combat Evolved, Super Mario 64 or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. At the moment I'm feeling Symphony of the Night more than the other four, but I do not go around comparing everything I play to it unless it has something in common.

So, say I decide to play Metroid: Other M sometime, I might just compare it to Metroid Prime and Symphony of the Night since it could share similarities, but I won't compare it to Diablo II. Or case in point, I loved Final Fantasy XIII but I would never compare it to Diablo II.
