If I compared every game I played to RE4, 98% of them would look embarassingly inferior. The other 2% would simply look inferior.
I compare games of the same genre, or the same developer, or games that have something in common.
I can compare Prince of Persia to Enslaved, but I can't compare Bayonetta to Killzone 2 or something.
I do compare sports games even if they are not the same sport. For example, I can tell you that the NHL series has better commentators and overall gameplay than any other sports series, IMO.
And comparing everything to OoT would be pointless. :)
When it comes time for me to put my review on GS I pretty much do, yes. In a more general sense though as often times the game is nothing like the other. I think, does this game deserve an 8.5 or a 9.0? Then you can help solidify that answer with other games (such as your favorite) and remember why those were so good, and why this one is great but lacking, so it is an 8.5 :P
Well, for instance i can compare portals (a puzzle game) visuals, sense of humor and originality to MGS4 quite easily...that's just really REALLY weird
how can you compare say like a puzzle game to MGS4 and justify that at all? lol
no way i don't do that.....i don't even like comparing games with other games of it's own kind, i judge it based on what IT has and only IT

try puzzle quest or bejewled
yea...you picked just about the ONLY puzzle game that is remotely like MGS4....which is still NOTHING like MGS4
lmao
No, not always, maybe only with games in the same genre (Adventure for OoT and JRPG for Chrono Trigger).
No. I compare each game only to the experience is provides to me and, in a sense, to other similar games. For example, it is hard not to compare platformers to Mario in some way, or arcadey racing games to Burnout, which I love. But I don't play Red Dead Redemption and keep thinking about how it compares to Uncharted 2 or Silent Hill 2. They are totally different experiences.
Never. I always judge a game based on its own merits. I don't know why anyone would colour their perceptions of games like that. You are playing games for the wrong reasons if you go into another game expecting it to match or exceed a game you've put on a pedestal.
No only if it was in the same genre of my favorite game of all time because standards change and if it looks and plays worse then my favorite game of all time then their is a problem with that game.

Same hereNo, not always, maybe only with games in the same genre (Adventure for OoT and JRPG for Chrono Trigger).
madsnakehhh
I don't have a favorite game of all time.

Are you sure GTA4 isn't your favourite?
BTW nice sig
Not really. I might compare it to my favorite game in a genre, but really my favorite game of all time is a toss-up between five games and it could change at any point in time from Metroid Prime, Diablo II, Halo: Combat Evolved, Super Mario 64 or Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. At the moment I'm feeling Symphony of the Night more than the other four, but I do not go around comparing everything I play to it unless it has something in common.
So, say I decide to play Metroid: Other M sometime, I might just compare it to Metroid Prime and Symphony of the Night since it could share similarities, but I won't compare it to Diablo II. Or case in point, I loved Final Fantasy XIII but I would never compare it to Diablo II.
