Since PS2, most consoles have also been able to play DVD/BluRay movies.

And so, I'd like to ask you..

Did you ever buy a console so as to watch movies on it?

I know, main reason is always to play games, but was the ability to play movies ever part of the reason you chose to buy a specific console?

For me, PS2 was such console. Back then, I did not have DVD player (they were outrageously pricey) so when I heard PS2 can play DVDs, I though, that's pretty good deal, a console that is also a DVD player!

So, part of the reason I got PS2 was the ability to use it as a DVD player. And I did use it to watch movies.

On PS3 and PS4, I've not even tested the movie player ability. (cue jokes about movie games)

Anyways, how about you? Did you ever buy console so as to watch movies on it along with regular gaming?

Maybe as a secondary reason with the PS2 and 3. Not anymore. I'd rather use my remote or (even better) mouse and keyboard with MPC-HC to control movies, as opposed to a PlayStation controller.

Yeah, my first DVD player was the PS2 as well. I know that a lot of my friends parents bought a ps2 just for the DVD player because they were the same price. I never bought a console for the sole purpose for a media player but it is a huge benefit saves me buying one for the TV.

The ps4 is a horrible media player unless it's done over a network. The Xbox is a great media player especially since it has VLC.

No. It was a bonus with PSP for bus commutes to work but not the reason for the purchase.

PS2 and PS3 were very high on my list because of their movie playback options. Especially the case for the PS3.

Wow! People actually do use their gaming consoles as multimedia units and entertainment centers!

But isnt it hard to use joypad as a remote when watching DVDs/BluRays? Thats one thing I remember when watching movies on PS2; using the joypad as a remote was bit of a pain.

Well it’s certainly a bonus feature that adds to the overall product when I consider a purchase. The controllers are certainly not ideal however these days you can get a remote control to rectify that.

Xbone S because Forza and 4K movies.

Halo and Gears are once and done games. Nothing else really on the system. So I play Forza and watch the occasional 4K Blu Ray on it.

I think I would be the outlier here.

All my home consoles I bought did not have the ability to watch movies as I am no longer a movie fan. If I do own a home console in the future with the ability to watch movies, the function will mostly be unused.

X pause or play and L2 and R2 seek. No it isn't. Its not as clunky as the ps2 anymore lol.

Just get a Universal Remote Control and program it with the media functions of the console.

It was a great secondary reason for the ps2 and ps3. Never my primary reason, but sure - it let me ditch a DVD player.

It was half the reason I picked up a PS3. Blu ray players were pretty damn expensive, and a PS3 had the bonus of playing games. Unfortunately, I played some of the exclusives and realized most were quite mediocre; Demon's Souls was really the only one that held my interest, but the blu ray player came in quite handy.

I had considered an xbox one s for the 4k BR playback + Gears 4 but

Then Gears 4 came to PC and my $80 Sony 4k player is better playback quality than the xb1s.

So newp.

Not outright, but as a secondary use, absolutely. PS2 had DVDs back when I was a kid, so I could hook it up in my room. The PS3 had the cheapest BR player at release, so that was a bonus as well. For 4K BR, i'm gonna be grabbing a standalone player.

I rarely used my consoles for physical media. I watched ergo proxy on blue ray and that was it. I do use Netflix and Hulu occasionally.

I have never bought a console for the purpose to watch media, but it is always a really nice bonus. I do use my Xbox One X and Wii U for YouTube, Netflix, etc. I also use my Xbox to watch Blurays, did that with my PS4 as well when I owned one. It is a great feature.

The ps3 was cheaper than blu ray players in my area.
