Did Sony catch MS off guard with the Digital edition? A '2013' moment?

No, highly unlikely. Microsoft already has an all digital console this gen, no reason why they wouldn’t have one lined up for next gen. Microsoft having a cheaper version of their next gen console has been long rumoured now so I really don’t see how Sony having one for theirs would catch Microsoft “off guard”. These companies probably know a lot more and/or anticipate for possible moves by their competitors. Certainly know a lot more then your average consumer.

That shit in 2013 was a series of Sony capitalizing on MS' blunders in substantial ways. It was a thorough slaughter, something that will be remembered for years to come.

It's not like the disc-less version is a tiny console or different form factor, it looks pretty similar. I'm actually not even sure of the point unless a person is just totally 100% anti-physical disc and wants to save $50 or whatever the price difference is.

Nah - I think this was their internal reaction to being poorly placed for the next gen launch. I think they realized their price point was going to be too high for some people, and they needed to come up with a way to sell a cheaper version. I believe MS is also planning the same thing, and I bet Sony believes that too. If anything, I would see Sony still at risk of their all-digital being undercut by MS's all-digital - if MS's XSX is akin to an X1X and their next-gen XSAD remains to be shown, this is a real risk (keep in mind, an XSAD2 could basically be a PS5 all-digital without the expensive SSD). Which is, in turn, why Sony still refuse to release their price and are blabbering on about "value being more important than cheap"

I think this is maybe something Sony did to help keep entry level pricing down. But neither has announced pricing yet. Surely MS will have to factor this into how they price the Series X.

thing is with the series s your getting weaker hardware.

with the ps5 digital you get the same machine as the other one. so xbox better make the series s even cheaper than the ps5 dig or it won't sell.

plus i think its stupid because this whole gen there first party and third parties has to make there games run on that weaker system. instead of letting the developers make use of the full specs of the high end machines. if there game does not run properly on the series s so more coding has to be done equals more time wasted instead of more polish on the high end machines. all of these developers have bugets and deadlines.

I'm sure MS have something similar up their sleeve. I can see a lot of people having major buyers remorse if they buy the digital version of either console. Big game releases on disc drop in price fairly fast but cost obscene amounts to buy on digital. In fact the reason most people haven't gone mostly digital already is both Sony and MS take the piss with digital pricing, MS are worse but Sony are still bad.

Wasn't there recent copyright news making the rounds, that implied a series of products in the new line? That could have been misconstrued, but given the S all-digital, it's not far-fetched.

Not at all. They made a copyright for the next "series", and they've released an all-digital console prior. It kinda makes sense that they'll follow the same lines. No guarantee, naturally.

No but I think Mighty X1X could serve very well as MS's low cost console and it's only a few TF's lower than Sony's high priced BS Jive and as cows have been saying, a few TF's lower and you won't notice a difference sooooo, ya know, just sayin. :P

The existance of an only digital system for the X series had been discussed for a while, the only difference is that MS didn't show it.

@SolidGame_basic: I am 99.99% sure there is no way to play another persons game with your user profile, trophies etc.

Logging into someone else's profile on the other hand does work...

If you are logged in or the console is set to home, any other profile that is logged in can access and play the games of every logged in profile.
