Oculus has endured a PR nightmare in recent weeks after it emerged its controversial Oculus Quest 2 Facebook account merge had turned some headsets into "paperweights". Well, that nightmare is set to continue with the revelation that deleting Facebook also deletes your Oculus purchases.

Twitter user @CixLiv revealed the news, which was subsequently verified by UploadVR.

Facebook confirmed to UploadVR that if you own the original Quest, Rift or Rift 2, don't plan to get another Oculus headset and haven't yet linked your Oculus and Facebook accounts, then deleting your unlinked Facebook account now won't affect your Oculus store purchases. However, it's worth noting currently anyone using an Oculus device for the first time or the Oculus Quest 2 needs to log in with a Facebook account, and from 2023, Facebook will no longer support Oculus accounts at all.

This latest news comes from text Facebook displays when you try to permanently delete your account. "Deleting your Facebook account will also delete your Oculus information," the text warns. "This includes your app purchases and achievements. You will no longer be able to return any apps and will lose any existing store credits."

As you'd expect, Oculus and Facebook have been criticised for this policy at a time when Facebook and social media are under intense scrutiny. I've seen plenty of people suggest creating separate Facebook accounts for Oculus, but there is concern that this approach may not work.

Last week, Facebook's augmented and virtual reality boss Andrew Bosworth responded to the account suspension issue by saying "people should continue to make sure their Facebook accounts are in good standing before they buy the headset".

"They can work through those problems before they do it."

Bosworth went on to say he was "a big fan of this move, even still".

"But I want to point out this is very common - Google, Apple, Xbox, pick a favourite," he said.

"They make you sign in with an account and there's a reason for that. We get to provide better services that way and stronger guarantees around things like data security, and compliance with regulations. So I'm a big fan of this move, even still."

Facebook stands out as evil because of the nature of their site. It basically spies on everything you do, where you go, who you talk to, what you like, who your family is, who your friends are, etc.

I deleted my facebook account a few years ago because exposure to it is detrimental to your health and freedom, and a form of slavery.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: Just checked out that headset, does look legit appealing. Might jump over as well. Though ATM the RIft S has been serving me well and the bullshit won't happen until 2023 so no rush, give a few years as well, the price will drop.

Fortunately I had no interest in buying an Oculus before facebook, and I have no interest in ever buying anything in the future that's owned by facebook, so I'm cool.

Whenever I'm getting into VR, I'll have much better options.

Back in the day, I was cool with Facebook after leaving MySpace but out of nowhere, Facebook started to get stupid with everyone posting sex pics and got all political, I deleted my account around 2012 and couldn't be more happier. Only social media I'll ever use is Twitter and at least it isn't as bad as Facebook but I only use Twitter just for up-to-date news and gaming news with the developers as well as GS Twitter page.

I use Twitter. I like it more so then FB. There's also MeWe I sometime use but nothing special about it despite I use it for the anime fan club stuff that goes over there.

Not going to lie I want that higher resolution and FOV... All the comparisons I have seen this is THE clearest VR headset even clearer than the Index and its £599, yeah Im selling while my Rift S is still worth something and grabbing one of those Reverbs :D.

As long as its pacifically marked then its all that matters when it comes to VR gaming.

We have HDMI 2.1 so they can go crazy with resolution on VR... BUT the PS5 is not powerful enough to to higher resolution, 120FPS and graphics that will be next generation VR graphics.

It will be behind PC VR when it launches so I have no interest in it, unless they like usual LOCK games to the console through money then they can go f*** them selves and maybe.

Outside of some accidental clicks, I have not used Facebook in about three years. Haven't made a post since 2016.

I have an Oculus, but have since upgraded to a different VR headset. I won't let this stop me from deleting my account if I decide to; I have maybe two games on there.

I wish more people would delete their Facebook accounts. I wish phones didn't come with it pre-installed.

I deleted mine last year it was one of the best decisions I've ever made social media is filth.

I'm from the pre-internet/pre-smartphone (pre-cellular phone, if you want to get serious) era. It's not a big deal to me.

Man I had to actually remember phone numbers back in the day. When your phone rang, you didn't know who was on the other end.

Glad I never bought Oculus. Their shitty practices was exclusivity was already enough to put me off and I knew this was gonna happen the day Facebook bought it.

Not going to lie my experiences with Oculus Rift where fantastic. I got mine when it launched in 2016 and had some of the most memorable experiences in gaming and tech in general. But I will never ever buy a Oculus product again I'm all in for VR but it sure as hell wouldn't be from them anymore for my next VR headset.

Yeah, the second I found Oculus was owned by Facebook, I passed on getting one.
