Aren't they sort of dominating? Or are they not really since they lack third party?

they already are dominant in sales.

in terms of quality of ownership, doubt it.... they would be fools to abandon their new found cash machine.

I mean consecutive generations. Yes, the Wii is dominating in sales but could Nintendo pull it again next gen.

So you mean could Nintendo have a multi-gen period of dominance again? Well, they're halfway there with the Wii, so I guess it's more than possible.

i'm willing to bet that yes, they'll maintain leadership for the next generation. what dethroned nintendo was the PS1, a whole new console much cheaper to develop, by a brand new company. i don't think it needs something as revolutionary as it to break the "new ninty kingdom", but hey, it's what brought them back to the throne, who knows.

It's very possible. Nintendo's Wii and DS platforms were precursors to securing long term market dominance and dev support in the future.

They totally could... mainly because their opposition did not get it at all.
It's hard to tell what they would need to do to make next gen a success as well.

The NES and SNES ruled supreme during its generations.

Nonstop-Madness

The NES ruled, but the SNES and Genesis split third party support and hardware sales down the middle.

This gen the Wii dominates hardware sales, but its captured only a minority of core gamers (generally speaking, those deeply attached to Nintendo's franchises) which is why its the first dominant seller in the history of gaming which doesn't enjoy the lion's share of 3rd party support.

Could the Wii 2 (or whatever its called) repeast the same feat? Probably. I doubtmost casuals are loyal to Nintendo (on the Wii they tend to buy whatever game appeals to them, not just stick to Nintendo franchises) but going back to the Wii example, most game developers don't understand casual gaming as well as Nintendo.

Still, I think the competition will be stronger next gen not only because Sony and MS will throw their own hats into the casual arena, but because both will offer systems more reasonably priced out of the gate (the X360's $400 launch price looks reasonable only next to the insanity of the PS3's $600 launch price).

The only thing Nintendo is dominating this gen is sales.

On the console scene, they have the least amount of good games, which is really what makes a company "dominate" imo.

Dude, you forgot the DS exists. It dominates in both sales and games.

Really depends if they can maintain control of all the casuals. Its never a 100% with that category, they just flock to the next big thing.

Is there some other gimmicky control they can pawn off as "the inovation" for people who don't normally play games?

If so, they got a chance.

Doubt MS or sony will let them do it easily but there is a big chance for them to do it.

I think that once a new console FINALLY comes out that it will dominate again if it's an actual powerhouse hardcore gamers machine with a more advanced motion controller that still can operate as a normal controller (similar to the wiimote and nunchuck setup).

They're in the position to keep the momentum going. A higher tech console with a more core-focused library would do the trick. They already have the children, the casuals, and if they graduate them into more in-depth gameplay, well, then I see them dominating again.

I can't picture it, it is one of those thing, certainly could be wrong, but I can't see many of the people who own a Wii, buying the next version because it is the next version. My folks have a Wii, and I am sure they won't change it until it breaks. There are a lot of people who own Wii like my folks who won't be buying new technology for the sake of it, or even and upgrade to HD. It is possibly Nintendo know this, but hey, i could be wrong.

Casuals will stick to Nintendo consoles because of Mario, Mario Kart, and Wii Sports/Fit...so yeah they should still be winning next gen. Casuals aren't gonna look at modnation racers and sports adventures or whatever as anything else but ripoffs

Either way they are in the best position and did this really smart. They rule the casual gamers and the normal gamers. Casuals because they actually provide quality casual software, and normal gamers because they have so many quality exclusives so it's a great second platform. The large amount of good games is actually a weakness of the other platforms, because they are all over the place.

This generation isn't over folks (not saying the Wii isn't going to have the most hardware sales, but if you look carefully the Wii's percentage of overall hardware sales between the three declines annually.)

The problem is its not Mario or Zelda who made Nintendo dominate this generation because they were already there last generation and they couldn't dominate but its Wii sport..etc series and I don't know if those games got a strong fanbase like Mario and Zelda or it was just because of Motion control fad or whatever you can call it.

It'll be hard to convince those people to buy a new console. I wonder whether they can do that with the 3DS.

No idea. Wii2 could bomb completely or get bigger than ever.
