Consoles may not be as powerful as we were led to believe...

One of the poster-boys for how powerful consoles are is Assassin's Creed Valhalla (which runs as well on equivalent AMD hardware but no one mentions it).

Alex Battaglia has made some comparisons of consoles vs PC's. Two games in which consoles stood out were COD Black Ops Cold War and the aforementioned AC Valhalla. It is important to note however that these games rendered alpha effects at a much lower native res than PC which according to Alex might explain the perceived advantages of the consoles. He got as close to consoles settings on PC as possible but could not quite match them because PC didn't go low enough.

With Hitman III and Watch_Dogs Legion however, he was given the exact settings by the dev for the former, and checked the config files for the latter. According to him, those comparisons are much closer to the truth than AC Valhalla or COD would lead you to believe.

He had this to say:

It's especially important because alpha effects are bandwidth-heavy and for devices that share bandwidth between their CPU and GPU, that could make a huge impact on performance.

A $2000 PC might be a bit more powerful than a $400 console? In other news water is wet.

These companies say "we are going to make the best system to unlock unlimited potential for developers" and "most powerful system ever"

It's just talk though! I mean I would hope they're designing a quality product. But they have to decide what features and specs their machine is going to have and it all comes to what will it cost on the store shelf and what will their profit look like.

It looks like they've decided the machines should not cost more than $500 so we're always going to be limited to what's the best tech at that price point that they won't take much of a/any loss on.

We were led to believe that 4k 60fps is possible on the new consoles.

It is.

Consoles are like virus free pcs without the cheaters.

Does it really matter? No. Enjoy what you like on what you like. The differences are negligible at this point.

Alex lost his credibility since claiming halo infinite looked bad because of mere light.

I find consoles more comfortable to play than on a computer, and love the games available on them. Never once turned down a fun game because of a difference in power compared to PC.

Yeah that video was kinda weird.

I mean Halo Infinite looked bad because of its awful art direction. It just looked bland, drab. And anything that wasn't new just looked like the same old Halo. Just exactly the same.

It had nothing to do with time of day or lighting.

It had a lot to do with it. The game would have looked a lot better with better lighting, but still not looked good. Lighting can have a dramatic effect on scenes and might be the biggest factor at times.

Wouldn't change the bad character models, low draw distances, bad textures, texture pop-ins and all that sucked.

If your 5700-sporting PC costs you $2000, you're doing something wrong.

It is truly amazing. Some folks believed SSDs were going to be a game changer and that PCs were not capable of handling SSDs "true" potential because of imaginary bottlenecks. 😂🤣

The performance advantages keep getting hindered by advancements in display technology and that power instead goes toward chasing resolution and framerate horizon, with minimal advancements in visual fidelity.

@NathanDrakeSwag: Where exactly are you getting PC gamers all have $2,000 gaming PC? That's way too much for a simple gaming PC. $700-$1,000 within that range is my recommendation but nothing further then that.

Edit: Anyone going for $2,000 PC, I always assume its a custom loop build.

I knew it, some day PCs would eventually surpass consoles! But people forget the the PS5 is yet to unlock the true power of the SSD and rDNA 3 features.

It has been like this forever. My PC is always going to be more powerful than the consoles. I am ok with that. (After all my PC always costs more than all the current consoles combined so duh.

Yet when it's Xbox vs PlayStation, it's all the pretty things just like this console gamers argue about. Lems and cows were literally arguing over a few lines of resolution in the 7th gen.

But as soon as a PC gamer says something, console gamers act like they're above such petty differences.

The RTX 2060 Super being able to keep up with the PS5 and Xbox Series X is even more of an eye opener. Sony and Microsoft will have to hope that ray tracing doesn't play a role in a lot of games this generation as the 2060 Super easily outperforms them in that and it isn't that far behind them in rasterization either. Doesn't help that the 2060 Super can use DLSS to give itself a performance boost.

I used to sit on a trash couch or on the floor playing NES and my Atari 2600 that wasn't as comfortable as PC gaming in a nice leather chair or whatever so no i don't agree with you. And I have turned down console games that were trash and were better on PC.
