I'm not falling for the console is cheaper line of bull again this gen. Since dec 2013, my Xbox has cost me:

$400 for the console.

$300 for Xbox live.

$120 for game pass

$60 to replace a controller that stopped working.

$85 for new hdd for Xbox one to replace broken drive.

$30 for a new power supply for the if Xbox one.

My PC cost me $450 and still plays games better than my Xbox one.

Depends on what you build. My PC is far more expensive than consoles, its also far more powerful.

They generally offer better value for the hardware. Your $450 has either used parts or is a piece of crap.

Well I guess it all depends on what you buy and if things break down regardless of if it’s console or PC. Personally I really don’t care what’s cheaper or not, I just prefer to do my gaming on consoles.

@joebones5000: Your $450 PC will be crap in a few years and won't be able to play anything.......all your other crap is frivolous bs, you'd have to buy a keyboard and mouse when those break

I honestly can't imagine what you're doing to your console for all those things to happen. I've never had a console break on me. Had to replace a controller once, that's it.

PC's cost more because they have much better components which equates to better performance unless you're stupid and buy a crap one for $450. Oh wait...

An XSX and PS5 equivalent GPU would cost more than those entire consoles will.

I can only imagine how bad your gaming experience is on a $450 PC. You're probably struggling to run CSGO on low settings and playing on a 1080p 60hz monitor.

Free online is literally the only valid point you listed. Aside from that PC gaming is a lot more expensive.

Maxed on what settings and resolution?

You'll just have to buy a new GPU that costs more than an entire console instead if you don't want it to look like crap. Possibly a new CPU if your current one would bottleneck. Maybe a new power supply if you're still using a lower watt unless you want to risk burning down your entire PC.

Don't forget a 4K 120hz monitor which will cost you far more than a superior looking TV with a much bigger screen will. And if you're hooking a PC up to a TV well why choose PC over console to begin with?

Console is better than PC. Fact.

totally irrelevant.

what im saying is, PC is in your hand. if you wanna play game on cheaper. can play, if you wanna need full performance, get expensive one.

Nvidia cards are more expensive but AMD cards are very affordable yet provide similar performance.

you will buy a PS5 to play Resident Evil 8. we wont.

Your term of "little" is very subjective. Most high end graphics cards (if you want to outperform consoles and not just match them) in most cases cost just around the price of a next gen console if not more.

A budget card like a 2060 is $300+ alone and you're acting like entire prebuilt no hassle consoles with high end specs for slightly more than that is a big deal.

I bet your PC is so crap that if you bought a high end card you would have to replace every component just for it to be compatible, fit and not bottleneck.

That's silly pants.

Here's my hot take

Building a decent non-shit PC from scratch is easily 100% more expensive than buying a new console (and of course you can spend plenty more if you're hardcore). That is, I would honestly never recommend someone spend less than, say, 750 to build a new PC. I can ramble on in detail on why, but I wont.

Over time, the cost difference can either remain or shrink depending on your upgrading philosophy. How/why? Because you upgrade parts instead of scrapping the whole thing and starting over.

I don't see the point in arguing buying a PC is cheaper than a console, because 1) you almost never do it - for most people it's a once in a blue moon thing, and they upgrade components instead afterwards. 2) cheaper =/= better. It could be a console level experience for cheap, and/or a retro-gaming device for dirt cheap; or it could be an absolute monster for absolute monster money. When you pay for a PC and then go forward in time upgrading it, you make no sacrifices - you pay the exact amount it takes to get the exact gaming experience you want and need. There's no wrong cost or wrong build; they go hand in hand. With consoles you get what they give you and if that's not exactly how you would prefer to play you are out of luck.

@NathanDrakeSwag: But why would anyone sitting at a table while playing opt for a 4K monitor over a far better optimized for gaming 1440p monitor? 4K is ridiculous for games that are already graphically intensive. Better to use those wasted resources on other settings. Lol, like console players are playing at native 4K 120 Hz.

@joebones5000: Why are you adding in gamepass as part of the cost? Adding in xbox live is fair, but Gamepass is totally optional bruh.

I'm pro-PC, but your comparison is just full of fail.

Also, nobody believes you're still running games at any sort of decent settings after spending $450 initially. Stop giving hermits a bad name plz.

Yeah, other than the fact the gaming laptop I've been looking into costs $3,000 and doesn't come with a mouse. Oh or the fact that not everyone buys new peripherals or has malfunctions. I easily spend what I would on a top of the line PC on my consoles since I like getting so much extra crap, but that is far from the case in most scenarios. Most of the people I know on PS4 and Xbox have had the same controller for 4+ years. I'll be looking into purchasing an i9 laptop to replace my old one around black friday/cyber monday.

I'm not up to speed on Live or Game Pass pricing, but those strikeouts are anecdotal. Could definitely go a gen without those things happening. Likewise, could have those same issues or worse with your PC. Every major component in my PC cost me at least the price of a newly launched console, if one goes tits up that replacement gonna suck.

A decent build will always cost more than a console. Wanna upgrade the GPU, depending on what you're after, likely looking at console+ pricing.

PC dudes really need to let this one go. Consoles are made to be affordable to the mainstream, even if console makers have to eat a loss at first.

Decent settings? probably not. Much better than current consoles? most likely yes.

I put a quick build together with XSX equivalent specs and it would be over $1700 minimum.

This is before a monitor, desk, peripherals. And keep in mind consoles have 4K disc drives and come with a controller.

I've said it before and I guess I'll say it again; the PC vs console game is a waste of time and potential. Instead of consoles just being watered down budget PC's, they should put more emphasis on what they can do better... like LANs.

Of course PC's can do LANs as well, and better, but lugging around a giant tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, headphones, etc, plus the space needed and the accompanying setup is a pain in the butt... worth it, but still a pain. Now it's obvious that consoles can't compete on the power level, but what they lack in raw performance they make up for in cost and convenience. For the same LAN you need a fraction of the hardware, and it's way easier to set up. In a world where convenience is king, why has this option been thrown away?

My assumption is so they can control where you play, and can therefore charge you to do it. But you lose so much for such a small return. If you've never been part of a 16 player lan with your friends...I feel sorry for you, because you don't know what you've missed.

That's one factor I'm tired of people overlooking; what are some of yours? It's hard to care about who's right or wrong when the lions have already eaten your baby.

What specs are you rocking in that $450 PC? just curious.

GTX 1660 and a Ryzen 1600? something like that?
