The undisputed Game of the Year for 2009. With Modern Warfare 2 getting a 9.0, that pretty much confirms the GOTY to Uncharted 2.
How about the PS3? Two years in a row with Game of the Year's, clearly the dominant system compared to the Wii and 360.

Gamespot's GOTY award have ranged anywhere from 10 all the way down to 8.4 (EverQuest, 1999). So score has no bearing on a GOTY award.

Don't understimate MW2. Due to its popularity and the MP quality I think it still has a chance of GOTY.
I don't think a sequel like Uncharted or MW2 should get GOTY. GOTY should be a new groundbreaking game (or at least something new). Both of the aforementioned games, while stellar, are merely expanding on the first game in the series.channtheman1
As for past GOTY's that have been "sequels:"MGS4, Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, GTAIII, Chrono Cross and Ocarina of Time.foxhound_foxSMG, RE4, Wind Waker, Chrono Cross and OoT are hardly "sequels" though I suppose MW2 is sequel in name only? I assume it has no story arc or anything?

yes its a shame. but would you call super mario galaxy a sequel. you know, it doesn't continue sunshines story or anything. same with wind waker and ocraina of time.

Spoilers of the FIRST 5 SECONDS. lol
Right of the bat they say it takes place 5 years after CoD4:MW, and the intro replays all of the important events from the first game. So I would say it's a pretty true sequel.
Forza 3 will be a contender aswell, although I still think Uncharted 2 will take it overall.
Ass Creed 2 as well. After seeing the combat system of that game I can safely say it's probably going to fail on the same fronts as the first one.
Well my GOTY is Persona 4 (by a freaking huge margin) but that came out last year in the US and failed here. Like i said in that other thread, i'd love it if Demons Souls wins GOTY. The game came out of no-where and so would the award.
And like Foxhound_fox said, its not always the highest scoring game that wins GOTY.
for now, my personal goty is demon's souls, but i just rented Uncharted 2, so i'll see if i like it better

Ahh, Chrono Cross a ten. Thats what Im talking about. And mgs4 does not deserve to be in the same league.I love Uncharted 2 and if it got GOTY then I'm happy, but the score doesn't guarantee a game get GOTY. Plus, some games are still not out yet, like ACII which looks really good, so far it got all 9's and one 10 (from PTOM). Another serious contender is Demon's Souls, although I dont like it but I think it's got a lot of high scores from critics, even the usually critical Edge magazine (UK)gave it a 9! (remember thatthey gave MGS4 only 8 )
thats an opinion as is GOTY and it seems that in GS opinion Uncharted 2>>>MW2.Im sry im happy for Uncharted 2 and im gonna let you finish but....MW2 IS THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!! *shrugs*

Ass Creed 2 as well. That sounds like the title of a cheap porno. Anyways I think the contenders will be UC2, Dragon Age, Batman AA and, hopefully, Demon's Souls. I still think UC2 is going to get it but I wouldn't be surprised to see DA taking the crown. DS is still my personal GOTY though.Gamespot GOTY's since 1996 (Taken off Wikipedia)

Serious Sam: The First Encounter ?!!! Are they serious? No one lives Forever was ten times better... it's sad that it had to compete in 2000 and 2002 instead of 2001...
I have never played Uncharted 2, so I can't comment on how much that game deserves it... but come on. Dragon Age on the PC should get it. The PC didn't get GOTY in a long long time (not counting WoW which has a base entirely different than the PC gamers I have in mind) , and I think Dragon Age is the perfect candidate for that. Besides we all know Dragon Age was made with the PC in mind and consoles were the ports, which is quite rare these days...

This may not be a great judge of the whole of GS, but the Hotspot (their podcast) had very little mention of dragon age in general. Yet they gushed over uncharted 2 for a couple of weeks. Its really hard to compare these games, as both are great for different reasons. I dont know which game I would give it to right now, since I havent played MW2 or Ass Creed 2 yet so Ill wait till ive played them all and they sink in. I really think thats wise because back in august I thought Batman would be my goty. Alot of these october/november games surprised me this year, thats for sure. The undisputed Game of the Year for 2009. So, you use GameSpot scores as the be-all-and-end-all all the while ignoring that several other games got 9.5. In addition, the average score for Modern Warfare 2 is almost identical to Uncharted 2's.

Does he just mean GS GOTY? If he does, then using GS score would be more applicable.

Innovation means nothing if the game loses gameplay for it.I hate it when uninnovative great games are bashed for new mediocre games. Not saynig DS is mediocre, Demon's Souls is a Diablo clone. It can't be bad. Demon's Souls is a truly great game and I hope the Japanese start making games like it instead of that JRPG trash.
Well it would be pretty stupid for them to give it to MW2 now considering that their own reviewers said that U2 and Forza 3 are better games.mhsdrake
One reviewer each. GameSpot has a **** load of people, obviously.
DragonAge is hardly original(awesome game though) Demon's Souls if anything has more originality going for it.

I would concur... but I don't know if Gamespot will agree with us. Plus, it doesn't help that basically everything that was released this year was a sequel.
As for past GOTY's that have been "sequels:"
MGS4, Super Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, GTAIII, Chrono Cross and Ocarina of Time.
Past GOTY's that have not been "sequels:"
Diablo, Total Annihilation, Grim Fandango, EverQuest, The Sims, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Metroid Prime, World of Warcraft and Gears of War
So it really could go either way. I hope that it is Dragon Age, since at least it is "original" to an extent. Though, I can foresee ACII getting it (given how much of a fan VanOrd is). MW2 is the last game that deserves it. But its going to get it almost everywhere... sadly.ChrisJ2004

ahem "DragonAge is hardly original(awesome game though)" I hardly bashed the game, I just pointed out it isn't very original. IT just isn't, hell if we got really critical about it the setting itself is a giant cliche. and I'd disagree with Diablo Clone,Please Log In to post.
