Colossal Order's city-builder reaches a new milestone, buoyed by its vibrant modding community

Exactly a year after its initial release, Cities: Skylines has sold 2 million copies worldwide across Windows, Mac and Linux PCs.

More here.

Not bad for a niche title.

Thoughts?

All I can say is that big publishers declared this genre dead.

The low asking price probably helped a lot ($30 at launch) as well as a dearth of proper city builders. A shame the two DLCs haven't lived up to the excellence of the base game.

There's supposed to be an Xbone port of this around the end of 2016. Given how CPU hungry the game is, wonder how much they'll have to compromise to keep it running with that tablet processor.

@R4gn4r0k: I hope this re-opens the door for these publishers or anyone else to reinvest their time into this genre of game as I really enjoyed playing all the old Sim CIties and really enjoyed playing CIties Skylines aswell. I would love to see more games in this genre in the future or hopefully a 2nd game from the developers of Cities Skylines.

That indie outsold most big budget console exclusives lol even with all the piracy on PC. This is good it shows how lucrative the PC platform is

I bought a copy on sale awhile ago.

It's not very deep or complex but still fun and better than the latest Simcity.

I don't expect much from big publishers anymore. Looking at the likes of EA or Konami, I see they completely lost any connection to the real world.

I think Maxis was shut down or met with severe layoffs after SimCity flopped.

I've thought about buying it on a few occasions, but it always strikes me as a game that probably wouldn't meet, or surpass similar games of its type that came out ages ago, like Sim City 4, so I never bothered. I'm probably too harsh. Lots of games give me that vibe.

Imho, Cities: Skylines manages to surpass SimCity 4 in many aspects.

With how EA pissed all over the genre's grave with the abomination that is the newest Sim City, it's no wonder.

Not bad for a game developed by less than 10 people (I think they have 16 now, though).

Great game, amazing fun, well-supported. Love it.

*Looking forward to the upcoming terraforming tools and canals.

Given how "meh" city builders have been lately, it is pretty much your only good choice.

Thankfully, it is not only a good game, but a great one. And the mods! Oh, the lovely mods!

Such a great success story. The developers are awesome, it's well deserved.

Loved Cities: Skylines, it's more of a better city designer than it is a city management game (because the latter part isnt hard outside of transport), but I love it for that, cities can look wonderful in how flexible you can lay down a city around hills and just generally avoiding having your city look dull with a grid. They're adding more and more systems to the game, which is exciting.

Also, I'm not usually one to go on youtube to watch 'Let's Plays" but there are a few on Cities Skylines that are excellent, showing a timelapse first and the person building shit along with their thought process, the game just works so well for such format.

@True_Gamer_: Football games are typically played on consoles, selling 14 million copies. Bad example. But expected.
