Big bastard Capcom has been accused of stealing. Even though they and most the industry have been doing it for decades for a low tier hobby full of failed movie hacks, gaming media acting as PR, and billionaire scam artists with offshore accounts (who care about sexism) etc... Someone just noticed.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2021-05-10-movie-director-says-capcom-copied-his-propellerhead-monster-for-resident-evil-village-boss-fight#comments

Movie director says Capcom copied his monster for Resident Evil Village boss fight

A movie director has accused Capcom of copying one of his monsters for a Resident Evil Village boss fight.

Dutch director Richard Raaphorst said the Sturm boss found in the recently-released Resident Evil Village is a "one-to-one" copy of a monster he created for his 2013 found footage horror film Frankenstein's Army.

Capcom failed to comment by press time.

"This is just one-to-one, really," Raaphorst told Eurogamer in an interview.

"It's just the same scene as in my movie, except that in my movie you have to cut loose the fuel tubes. That's the only thing that is missing. But the whole thing is getting into flames, and then it explodes, and then the way it rotates through the camera - it's all the same, really. Even the environments, the whole colour palette. It looks like an animatic for my movie."

Raaphorst said Capcom has at no point approached him, and that he only found out about the similarity after he received messages from fans on 7th May - the day Resident Evil Village went on sale.

"At first I felt pissed," he said. "Then I felt proud. Now, I see all the reactions and I feel pissed again, and insulted. It's so difficult to come up with a great design. It's really hard to actually think about something that communicates as a cool design. It's not just that ideas are floating around that you can grab. It's actually hard labour. Then they just grab it and put it somewhere in the game.

"It's creative abuse."

Raaphorst told Eurogamer he does not expect to receive any royalty payment from Capcom because he does not own the rights to the film. Those creative rights are owned by MPI Media Group, the American movie finance and distribution company Raaphorst partnered with to get Frankenstein's Army made.

But he would like a credit in Resident Evil Village. Raaphorst said: "I am exploring my options."

"If they had asked me, 'hey, Richard, we'd love to have your design in our next Resident Evil, and we will give you a credit or some kind of royalty payment,' I would have been honoured and flattered and proud. It would have been a super positive experience."

Kinda with the dude on this one, I mean, this isn't a case of similarity, or taking inspiration, it's literally the exact same shit lifted and copy pasted.

So are the chestbusters of RE 2 Remake. It's 1 to 1 from the movie alien.

Werewolves, zombies, ... all that stuff is just generic monsters, but someone came up with their timeless design once.

Lazy edit: but I though this was about that lady type enemy. I'm not going to watch any of those movies, lol. As I'm afraid of spoilers (more afraid of that than any horror in RE games). So I could be completely wrong here :)

Well... Zombies predate George Romero.

George Romero reinterpreted how they are presented, influenced from I Am Legend starring the Fresh Prince Of Bell Air and shitty looking CGI monsters.

The more we know. 😊

Video game devs have been trying so hard to be more like movies so copying content from that media is not too surprising. After all, gaming is all about the cinematic experience. 😐

Normally when instances like this happen the accuser is just trying to get their fame; but there's shocking resemblance with this one.

Can you actually "steal" a character design though, as opposed to an actual character (with a name, personality, backstory, etc)?

Like, presumably you could make evil armoured diving suit enemies without Bioshock devs suing you? But you'd probably run into trouble if you called them Big Daddies from Rapture?

Can you really copyright a dude with a propeller for a face, any more than you could a dude with a sword for an arm or a lady with a gun for a leg? It all seems very generic...

That's just how lazy Resident Evil 8 development was I guess. Steal the likeness of the 9 foot tall woman 1 for 1, steal a monster from a 2013 movie, and make a game most people think is crap, but still cash in big because it was hyped enough pre launch that people actually bought that shit before it came out. And people wonder why gaming is spiraling down the shitter.

Considering Hollywood has been stealing from writers for years, seems fitting someone should return the favor. Legally, someone can go pitch a script they've works years on to studio executives and they can be like "get the **** out of here with that ****ing ****", then when they're alone be like "okay, we are going to use that, just need to change three things legally. The heroes name is Bill not Bob, it takes place in Los Angeles not New York, and it takes place in the 2000s decade not 1990s, done, everything else can be identical across the board. Get Julia Roberts and The Rock on it ASAP."

Can't believe how egregious the copying is in that design. Lol

Also, Heisenberg reminded me totally of Tetsuo: The Iron Man later on.

Story theft happens, Even in movies, you get something that's a creative hit, of course you get a bunch of knockoffs. Same deal happens in games, and now you have games lifting straight from movies. L.A. Noire for example basically just ripped off multiple movies (L.A. Confidential, Double Indemnity, and probably a bunch of others). But that was sort of the point of that game, I took it more as an homage to all those noir movies in video game form.

This on the other hand just seems like a straight up design ripoff for this character. Pretty lame, and bizarre since this movie is hardly a classic, so it's hard to call it an "homage" as much as it is a theft. It might have just been one particular artist that did this, and Capcom (the company) was actually unaware. That happens too.

Sure, but that's nothing new for the series.

RE1 was basically a clone of Alone in the Dark (plus more action sequences), RE4 borrowed from the film Dagon, etc.

The series was never praised for its originality, just its production values and tense gameplay.

It's true. None of their games are truly original, but they are extremely well done.

@uninspiredcup: oh gosh, that settles it, if it makes the filmmaker feel better, the movie wasn't on my radar until now, now I have to watch it, I can't be the only one now, if anything it'll probably help the movie do better, and if anything I hope that helps Capcom come any lawsuit, and help the filmmaker, financially

One could claim that he movie ripped off Bioshock's big daddies by removing the drill arm and adding propeller to the face, but Capcom made a 1:1 copy.

Funny, when the first RE came out and they copied the Alone in the Dark formula Capcom told Shinji Mikami to lie and say he never saw that game prior to RE releasing.

Proper rip-off. Not even in the vein of "rip off but so much shittier". Cool design, nonetheless.
