Can we say that Sony over-hyped the PS4?

I may be new to System Wars but I'm not new to system wars. I remember when the PS2 was being announced, Sony talked CRAZY shit about launching missiles using Emotion Engine and when the PS3 was announced, it was going to be an "entertainment supercomputer." As history shows, the PS2 was a great system but it was the games that really made it shine. The PS3 was a good system in its own right, but they launched a year after a very capable XBox was on the shelves.

This time around, Sony seems very different from those launches. For one thing, the day they revealed the thing, they showed games being played with controller in hand. They made no boasts about "gaming in the fourth dimension" and the looniness we've almost come to associate with a Playstation launch. Instead, they shocked us with what was actually in the machine (hey, rewind your brain a little bit and remember what you were thinking when they first announced the thing would have 8GBs of GDDR5).

Point of the thread being. Everything from the latest KillZone footage, Driveclub 11 second clip, strong rumors suggesting BF4 in 1080p and even the Destiny Moon Gameplay trailer (check it out on PSN if you haven't already yet!) show that this is a magnificently capable system with a lot to offer. Although we won't be launching any time traveling missiles anytime soon, it does truly seem like Greatness Awaits. What are your thoughts System Wars?

I don't think Sony is making the same mistakes as the PS3 by over-hyping it. If anything, cows are over-hyping it. It will be a great console, and probably the best console in the future but right now it doesn't have anything to brag about.

I'd say they're being misleading if anything.

Cows will buy the system thinking they're getting games when they won't. Unless you enjoy indies and want to needlessly lay down £350 to play them.

I'd say under hyped, seeing as how playstation systems are the only thing saving gaming from extinction.

As for the PS4, sure it has great potential. The games are looking good (besides all the fog), but I think Sony and their fans are seriously underestimating what the XB1 can do. Once devs master it, next year is going to be epic.

@Shewgenja: Sony always over hypes. Less this time then with ps3 (1080p 120fps), but they still touted features that either weren't finished yet or won't be available day 1. Instant resume and gaikai to name a few. However for the most part they have focused on games, which is the right call.

Not sure how claims like this can even be made with a straight face. The PS4 has games, and it will get more games beyond the strong indie support.

Not at all the only thing over-hyped is all the fanboyism here from Xbox fans and PlayStation fans.

The facts speak for themselves, this time around Sony owned up and said yes we didn't do the right things with the PlayStation3, Were sorry this time around we have worked with the people who will produce the games and we have made a very easy way of programming for our system, we are giving the developers the best ram that they can have, we are in this for the games and we have built a console to the best of our ability at a price good enough for the consumers and good enough that we make a small profit.

They then went on to say listen we had a good ride with free online but we learnt the hard way that it costs money and on that not we are please to announce that our online service PlayStation plus will carry on and this will be required to play multiplayer parts of games, everything will still be available for free except this, but we will continue the free game collection. i mean you can't say fairer than that.

I honestly believe they have said it how it is and not gave us a load of Bull.

Unlike Microsoft who still seem to have the need to hype everything up, and in my eyes they are playing the game like sony did with the ps3. there is no denying it. and the fact is Xbox One sounds great now there is no denying that but reality is all this stuff which sounds great are all the mistakes they made in the first place and they are just reversals,

My feeling is that Sony have not changed the record at any moment throughout this campaign and Microsoft have many times.

I mean it's getting bad on here when someone makes a thread saying fifa plays better on xbox one due to the fact xbox one will record highlights and yet forgot the whole knowledge that the ps3 can record a whole 15mins or stream an entire match, clutching at straws.

Both systems are going to be good there is no denying that and i'm for one looking forward to it, no matter if i favour sony more than microsoft i'll still end up buying an xbox one at somepoint.

There are plenty of retail and indie games coming to the PS4. You're trying hard, but I'm not sure why.

There are 5 retail exclusives coming from Sony, 3 of which are DelayClub, Rushzone and Knack.

So no there is not plenty and what is coming is mostly garbage.

Did I say exclusive? No. Games are games, people who own a PS4 can play games that are not exclusive.

If what is coming is mostly garbage than I feel bad for the gaming industry b/c most of what is coming is shared between the PS4, X1 and PC. So to you most of gaming is garbage.

Pretty much this. Sony was never that big on hyping PS4, sure at the reveal it was well presented in the best possible way but they learned not to repeat the PS3 by saying "4D at 120fps" and what not.

For years it's always been "we don't care for indie games", "we'll NEVER pay an online fee", and "at least our lineup isn't just generic shooters".

Cows, after flip-flopping more than Microsoft, are now in love with indies, in love with $50 online fees, and gushing over the latest installment in a shooter series that should have died years ago.

He's new to the System Wars board on the GameSpot forums, but he is not new to the "system wars" that takes place outside of these boards, like in the real world or the hundreds of other websites that dispute this very same thing.

Of course Sony is going to over-hype it. Every good company over-hypes their product. If your fans aren't disappointed in some way, it's time to hire new people who know how to market a product.

I actually don't think Sony has been trying to over-hype the ps4. BUT they have been stretching the truth a bit about online requirements and system features in attempts to separate itself from the bad publicity MS had been getting for being honest.

The ps4 will ultimately be a fine console, just not the best imo. When games will look similar between the two systems, you have tons of extra features with the X1, and the possibilities with free servers and cloud for all devs, the choice was easy for me to make.

I can't be the only one that remembers the ridiculous hype surrounding the PS3 and the Cell. Sony was at the height of their arrogance back then and it came back to bite them in the ass. Was the same level of hype surrounding the PS2? I still remember them claiming "Toy Story" level graphics. Did Sony make that claim?

Of course I still think the PS4's Share and Remote Play features are completely worthless, but with X1 looking more like a $500 cable box that has put gaming in the backseat it's all we got.

the industry is exposing sony's lies one by one so it's no surprise that ps4 is losing preorders faster than any other console in history.

I think they are successful at what they are doing ... my excitement is through the roof and the games look phenomenal

Ah... Third times a charm? Can you please share links to substantiate these claims? It seems no one arguing the contrary is willing to offer an argument beyond Resume on Startup, which I am still trying to locate where Sony promised would be ready at launch.

@Shewgenja: The system is delivering on a ton of its promises at launch, and it is mostly going to go incredibly smooth. Its amazing how well a launch of a product (software or hardware) goes when you don't force each and every user to connect to an internet connection and download a 2 GB update before you can even reach the home screen of the system (like on Xbox One).

Also... there have been some exchanges going on in Twitter with some journalists who have Xbox Ones and software... and they are alluding to very interesting mishaps on it. This is the stuff I have been hinting at in terms of functionality. With that said, because NO ONE believes me and how I work in the industry... i've decided to drop a bomb here and now for everyone.

To sum it up, when you enter a party on Xbox One, the party is not shared across games on the OS level. If you start a party at the home screen, you are considered to be in an "Xbox One party", and the moment ANY person in that party starts a game, the entire party is switched over to THAT GAME'S party system. That's right, EACH GAME HAS TO WRITE THEIR OWN SEPARATE PARTY SYSTEM API.

Because each game has their own party system, that basically means that the high-quality, uniform experience of Xbox Live has completely gone out the window. It's also forcing devs to write many network functionality for their game as a part of the new standards of X1, even if its an SP game, because you may be in a party with someone - causing more work and money costs. This is partially why indies haven't been as warm to the platform.

Less than a month away now.

Does overhype not mean that the product doesn't live up to the pre launch hype? PS4 isn't out yet and I haven't seen anything to suggest it won't live up to the hype.
