Can we all agree that the economics for SP games in a monthly Subscription market doesn't work?

With the rise of Monthly subscriptions and Cloud gaming coming into the market, people have been wondering how Single Player games fit into this market.

It seems like it doesn't at all. Single player games have low monetisation and would likely result in a loss.

It's quite inevitable in the future whatever Sony or Microsoft make regarding SP will have microtransactions in some form loaded onto Game Pass and PS Now.

The sales of AAA games has not slowed down this generation. I doubt the existence of this market you speak of.

For that matter, the subscription games you speak of are just a rotating door of "what's hot" before one cannibalizes the other. You cant navigate an entire industry that way. Huge gambles with a chance of big pay off while the failures go to F2P Hell.

Kratos rates this thread a Boy/10.

No. AC proved you can make a SP game with monetization without being TOO abusive.

You already started wrong.

Why are all of your threads about the pro-fleecing of consumers? It's gross.

Well it doesn’t work in the consumer’s favour but it does work in the developer’s/publisher’s favour. With physical or digital download you pay for a game once and you can play it whenever you want at no extra cost. With a subscription service you have to keep paying for that service in order to play that game regardless.

@Archangel3371: no on digital. they can revoke or nuke a account for purchase content. read the find print.

stream as a service(for video games) is anti consumers.

And how many games exactly are going to be on that subscription biased service? Ten or so might work, but once you get up into the hundreds things become very dicey for the developers. It'd take more than a few years just to break even on a AAA game once you've surpassed a couple of hundred games for $20 a month, even going something like $60 or $80 per month will result in taking months for the publisher/developer to earn back what it cost to make said game.

@firedrakes: Well yeah sure there is that potential with digital downloads from like Steam and other stores but that’s not really the point I’m making. For right now you can pay for a game once from Steam and basically play it whenever you want without a need to keep paying for it.

@blazepanzer24: I’m not really sure how the economics of it are worked out with the developers/publishers but I’m 100% certain that this is not something that they’ve all worked out and would enter into if it wasn’t financially beneficial to them.
