I had been always OK with Crash. It's an okay game. It is fun, polished and has its charm but boy is nostalgia factor strong in this one. Compared to Mario, Conker or Banjo iterations from that era it's nothing to write home about. Its convention and gameplay was very limited and despite attempts at spicing things up with lots of side sequences, it just isn't an extraordinary game. As a pure platformer, it's mediocre at best. What's so fun about such an on-rails limited world? I think even Spyro might have been a better game because of its world and mechanics.

What do you guys think?

Who calls it an extraordinary game? I think it's gotten the legacy its deserved, a decent and fun little game series. You're comparing it to Mario as if anyone has ever put Crash in the same category besides delusional haters.

Woah...woah...woah...Now I like Crash and I mean I guess it can be shallow. To be honest the games were just fun. It was simple for a reason. It's like playing mario or even a spyro the dragon. I didn't come here for complex gameplay I came here to have fun. Geez bruh eat a snickers.

Crash was 3rd in the mascot wars behind Mario 64 and Nights. Those games were good though. I liked them at least.

Iunno.. I remember playing the first one on PS at a friends house as a kid, and it was really fun. Wasn't Mario quality, but fun. We completed the game a few times together. I'd probably have to play it again to see if it's shallow as **** or not, though.

EDIT: Wait, GameSpot censor the word f*ck now again? Can they make up their minds? They went from hinting at a curse word = ban, to "curse words is OK if you censor them slightly", to "we don't censor curse words at all, to "now we censor them again".

Was great for its time, I frankly don't really want to see the talents of someone like Naughty Dog used to reprise such a game, they can hand off that work to anybody else that's better suited for the task.

The first game wasn't very good. The second and third one was really fun, but they were basically just Donkey Kong Country turned 90 degrees. Same enemies with no AI going backwards and forwards. Spyro 2 and 3 were definately better games, Spyro 2 was probably my favorite 3D platformer that wasn't Mario 64 that gen.

Nope. It's not mediocre. Crash series on PS1, is one of the best 3D platformers. Not the top, but one of the best.

Lol. Is this guy serious? Crash was great for its time. Not sure what kind of innovation you were looking for in a simplistic game. So I ask again. Lol. Is this guy serious?

I'm going to second the motion about eating a Snickers. Gah-lee, that's some seriously decades-old pent up rage over a game.

If you're going to make a thread like this, at least make it about something truly awe-inspiringly maddening, like drawing magic in FFVIII.

It was great for its time, timeless classic as Super Mario Bros? Nope, but that could be said about a lot of games from that era, especially concerning ps1.

i think soccer moms were complaining that little jimmy was learning not so good words on here so now gamespot is back to treating us like we are all kindergarten age kids again

now to address this topic, I think the whole of last year salty fries only made one thread that wasn't waste of time garbage.

it's a new year now and only about a week in and he's already posting garbage again. its going to be another loooong year *sigh*

Shallow? It's a goddamn platformer. Jesus, not everything has to be complicated to be good. In fact some of the best things are also the simplest.

Some times simplicity is all that's needed. Crash Bandicoot's appeal spread out to a large audience, which in it's own way, should be a testament that sometimes you don't need depth to create a very fun experience.

Hmm bringing up a dead franchise. I'd much rather see ND make a new Crash than continue to make Uncharted games.

Platforms don't have to be complicated to be fun. The first three Crash games on PS1 were simplistic yet fun.

Just like the first 3 Mario games on NES were simplistic yet very fun.

If it weren't simple, it wouldn't be easy to get into. And that's the thing; Crash 2 & 3 are fun to play today (a.k.a "aged well") because their simple games designed only to make you worry about moving forward. There's no camera issues because they're completely linear, they've got nice platforming, a fluid framerate, tight, responsive controls and good gameplay variation. They're great platformers.

I dont think being simple is inherently a bad thing, I think they are both fine games. I would even agree that mario has aged better than crash. I wouldnt call either shallow though

I don't think Sony's platformers were ever that interesting. They are well made and fun for what they are, but they're pretty average.

@Salt_The_Fries: Crash games were fun and for their era were good games. Nothing more , nothing less. All of you calling Crash Bandicoot series average or bad or anything like that but you never played those games when they first released let alone you ever played them you shouldnt even think to judge.

I would choose Crash bandicoot series or Jak series vs donkey kong , kirbys , wario and so many other Nintendo platforms. So , opinions. Average = 5/6 score wise. If you think Jak series for example are 5/6 caliber platformers ... so be it.
