It's extremely close between Final Fantasy and Xenoblade Chronicles games. I'm not a fan of the lyrical songs though, FF13 ew. Overall, I always know I'm in for a musical treat when I play a FF game.

I'll grant you that it's one of the best, probably my second favorite, but for me nothing tops Zelda in terms of music, specifically Wind Waker.

These two tracks for me still to this day remain my favorite pieces of music.

That said, Aerith's theme from FFVII is third.

Oh, and I also loved FFXV's cover of Stand by Me, by Florance + the Machine.

I dunno about unmatched, but it's pretty great. That's one aspect of the series where they almost never choke. It's definitely up there for me.

Though if I wasn't familiar with the series, and if I only listened to the tracks you posted in your OP, I'd have to outright disagree lol.

From the games you play only this two OST's stands out against any Final Fantasy. Rest of your any choices suck!

There are two games that I have played that absolutely DESTROY Final Fantasy in the music category in my opinion. Starbound and Tree of Savior. They sound nothing alike and nothing like Final Fantasy. But those two soundtracks really stir me up in a good way. Final Fantasy has great music, but these two games are just epic in the music category.

Listen to the music in the Starbound Trailer and you will get it.

Tree of Savior Also has incredible music here is a sample of one of the 100s of amazing tracks in Tree of Savior. This game is ear porn 9000x!

Could not disagree more. Nier is fine, just not on the same level for me. I love that about music so many great soundtracks to choose from. That is one of the many reasons that I am glad to be such an eclectic gamer. I get to hear it all!

As much as I love Final Fantasy and think that many of their games have great music in them, especially Final Fantasy Mystic Quest which totally rocks, there are plenty of games that have just as amazing or even better soundtracks. Some games/franchises off the top of my head are:

- Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger

- Sparkster on the SNES

- King of Fighters

- Blazblue

- Final Fight

- Xenoblade Chronicles

- Marvel vs Capcom

No, but it's not because the actual music from Final Fantasy is bad. It's just a difference with preference in music; I usually prefer songs in video games that are more emotional through instruments alone rather than a voice accompanying it.

Overall quality of the musical scores in FF games is appalling. Nice main theme, rest is just torture to your ears. I can only surmise the scores was composed and performed by a group of tone deaf rehab patients on a bad day.

Baten Kaitos has the best score by far ever heard in JRPG.

Also you left out FF 6. Boooo indz Booooooo.

its certainly up there. chrono trigger, okami (listening to shinshu plains right now..epic), the xenoblade series amongst others would be up there with it though.

oddly enough my fav FF soundtrack though is not from the mainline series. its FF crystal chronicles. i didnt like the game much but the soundtrack is epic (the track i was listening to has changed to a song from FF CC...nice timing :) ).

Depend on taste and what the game is about.

I really enjoyed ( and bought ) the OST of Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII and Tactics but it is possible it is because they grabbed my emotion a lot.

I really also enjoyed Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne soundtrack, some very epic tracks in those that gives the bosses a more epic battle.

great? yes. Unmatched? I don't think so. It comes down to personal taste in the end.

Which FF OSTs? Not all are created equal and there is a distinctive hierarchy of quality and general impression. Also it's maybe worth adding KH as an addendum since it's half FF and has an amazing set of original tracks.

There are a number of worthy competitors for best OSTs, though, and it's an exercise in futility to attempt reconciling the melancholic wonder of Jessica Curry's "Rapture" tracks to the erratic and hard-hitting guitars from DOOM.

Further, how do you even start to comparatively evaluate MIDI classics to full orchestral accompaniments of the same composition?

Incorrect.

And I'm only touching on the key tracks per game, I could probably post 30 amazing tracks from these games easily.

Some of the best music in gaming for me, for sure.....but unmatchable? Nope....and one thing I learned over the years about music, even what I think is the best music is will be despised by someone else, somewhere. I found it hard to agree with musical tastes often, for me music is in line with my personality and it's a vey personal experience, I try to avoid saying this piece of music is better than something else.

@indzman: Setting aside my dislike for FFXV as a game, a fair number of tracks are highly commendable. I prefer the piano arrangement versions myself, which I've provided below. I still find, collectively, FFX as having the overall strongest OST in the franchise, followed by VII and IX.

The FF series certainly has been consistent with its OST (I have not listened to XV's yet). My least favorite OST from the series was XII but it still has a good soundtrack.
