Can the Xbox 360 4gb console play original Xbox games?

I have the 360 Slim 360 4gb console without a harddrive in it. I just bought Halo and Halo 2 from Best Buy, and the cashier guy told me he was 90% sure that you need a 250 gig harddrive inside the console in order to play original Xbox games. Before I open them up, I wanna know for sure because I can still return them if they are unopened.

He's right. You need the hard drive to emulate the original Xbox hardware.

Does backwards compatibility for original Xbox games only work on the Xbox that comes with the 250gb harddrive already installed? Or can you use a 4gb console, add a 250gb harddrive and still be able to play original Xbox games?

Hopefully Msoft drops the price on the 250gig 360 to $199 this E3. The 4gig is nice but if you can't play the best games fully what is the point.

Thanks, that clears up my thoughts about 360 B/C. There is'nt much of it and it's rather system specific.

To play a game with backwards compatibility, it requires like a few hundred KBs of data to download, and they require you to have a 250 gig harddrive to download it, you can't just download it to your 4gb flash drive.

Yeah, how important is the BC to you though, really? For the price of a 360 harddrive you could buy yourself an original xbox and Nintendo 3DS. Go for the latter.

Personally, I never cared but you should know that BC has been a major SW issue. Especially the ps3 has take heat due to the lack of this but the 360 has'nt actually been all that great either.

I really don't care about the PS3 Slim not having PS2 BC. It has PS1 BC, and even though I have a fully BC PS3, a Slim PS3 and a PS2, at least you can still buy PS2s in stores. You haven't been able to buy Xbox in stores for like 5 years. I really am not that excited to buy an overpriced harddrive for my 360 when the only thing I would need it for is to play Halo CE and Halo 2. I am also not a big fan of buying used systems (Xbox), because 95% of people out there treat their stuff like absolute ****.

Edit: And I would have rather bought an HD port of Halo and Halo 2 on a stand alone 360 disc than buy the originals like I did and then have to buy a $120gb harddrive just to play them.

Yeah dude, M$ sells their 360 harddrive for $120 bucks. It's the only harddrive you can use on the console as well.

Wow 3 year old topic...lol ark like he ever owned a 360.

but yeah a note you no longer need an HDD just use a usb stick the 360 supports up to 64 gigs on two 32 gig usb sticks now and you can easily find cheap ones that meet the 360 speed reccomend so the stuff you put on it loads real quick.

There are no xbox games that could be classed as 'original'

If you can find one you're better off getting an original Xbox to play Xbox games. There's lots of them that aren't supported on Xbox 360 and the ones that are don't play perfectly on Xbox 360, weird graphical glitches here and there.

You need "a" HDD, not the 250 GB drive because you will have to download the emulator. I think the emulator is 200MB or so. So, you can play one with a 4GB 360.

My 360 is a "core" that was a launch unit (yep - a launch Core 360), and I bought the 10GB HDD. I played a lot of original XBox games on my 360 when I first got it.
