Can Super Mario Odyssey take GOTY from Zelda?

The game looks really creative and the open world aspect hearkens back the days of Super Mario 64, one of the most influential games of all time. I think this game can easily give Zelda a run for its money, although both are phenomenal, and the fact that we get them both in one year is amazing. What do you think, SW? Does Odyssey have a chance? Oh.. and I want that hat.

I'm not even sure Zelda is my personal GOTY. I'm about 30% done with the game only now having obtained the Master Sword.

I've really enjoyed Mario Kart 8D, For Honor, ME Andromeda and have Horizon ZD arriving in the mail today (hopefully).

Nope. There're more RPG fans than Platformer fans, so it will be a landslide for Zelda being GOTY. Unless they give it to Horizon...

If Super Mario Odyssey can take Game of the Year away from Breath of the Wind, it may be one of the greatest award upsets ever.

Sorry , a huge fan of SM64 here but from the 2 stages i saw im not convinced yet , level design and platform elements speaking seem well executed as always but nothing extraordinary. Also some worlds felt not lively enough , a bit blant if you like ( Forest and deep forest for example ) , yes i know its all about platforming but as i said before i get the feeling that odyssey was a Wii U game that ended up being on Switch more than anything and somewhat it shows that all over.

I expected to see something more exciting both world design / level design and gameplay mechanics from those gameplay demos but .. I think i got spoiled from SM64 and i expected SM64 x20 times better.

Considering the hate Sunshine got for being too open, highly unlikely.

We haven't enough information about the game to know... However, every Tuesday when games release there is a chance one if them can be the best game ever. So yes.

Mass Effect Andromeda is this year GOTY.

Either Super Mario Odyssey or Persona 5 are likely to be GOTY for me. I really liked Zelda but it's not in the running.

For me it was the lack of variety in settings and the obtuse level design.

Did i say bad anywhere ? Read again and quote properly please. I said BOTW months before its release might be one of the best Zelda ever made and i explained the reasons. Guess what happened.

I cant say the same with what i saw from Odyssey. That doesnt mean game wont meet high scores or will be bad by any means just it felt underwhelming to me = my opinion. So be hironical like usual SW trolls around wont work.

Also i was expecting a bit more graphically , did you see the forest level or even city ? Was like it build on an old engine. Not that it matters in a game like Mario but is something i noticed and made me think that odyssey could have been a Wii u title that pushed back big time. And if you ask me ,theres a high possibility for that

I imagine some will give it to Odyssey, but can't say without having played it. I'm very tepid toward BotW - in some ways it was great, in others not so much. But it will have the benefit of having released its DLC, while Mario will be new to the scene and have comparatively less content.

I'm not sure there are any games this year that could challenge either. The only announced game with GOTY potential in my mind is Destiny 2, and there's nowhere near as much industry goodwill toward it as there is toward Mario/Zelda.

Ni No Kuni II, Cuphead, and Wolfenstein II are likely to be high quality, but are just not in the same league.

Same here. Neither i was with Forest and Deep forest level. But i just watched the Sand kingdom level and was kinda awesome , both its design and gameplay mechanics involved ( i watched 10 min )

Mario would be the only game able to upset Zelda this year. So far Zelda has it on lock.

It looks like a good contender. I have to say this was my favourite game of the show, perhaps in the entire E3, with Spider-Man being a close second. I've always wanted to be a taxi.

I think the fact that this is even a conversation just goes to show that when Nintendo is on, there is not a single developer in the world that can stand toe to toe with them.

I don't give a shit who gets GOTY, I'm going to revel in the glory that both of these magnificent games offer.

On topic I guess: I think Zelda is greatest of all time level. So unless Odyssey is on par with Galaxy 2 for creativity + has Mario 64 levels of exploration and wonder I don't think it'll get GOTY above Zelda

I wanted to say Horizon: Zero Dawn but I can work with Persona 5 as GOTY.

Unlikely. I'm still betting on Zelda after the delay of Red dead redemption 2 to 2018.

If Odyssey is on the same level as BOTW, they will both get quite a few GOTY honors. Nintendo is hard to beat when they are at the top of their game.

Not sure. It might. Don't have nearly enough information about Odyssey to be sure. I do know its going to be one of the greatest things ever though.

The major ones imo for GOTY are probably BOTW, Odyssey, and Persona 5 when it comes to consoles. Honestly though it really comes down to BOTW and Odyssey in the end.

really? the award for GOTY should not be given until January of the following year. If a game gets released in 2017, no matter the month it should be allowed to win GOTY in 2017.

For a game being late release such as Odyssey, I always assume not everyone wouldn't have time to play it if a game is a late release such as October 27.

But nevertheless, I normally don't care who wins, everyone has there own GOTY.

With Read Dead Redemption 2 delays to 2018, Mario Odyssey is the only remaining game with a real shot at competing with Zelda BotW. The game looks fantastic.

Breath of the Wild. The game that starts out as the best Zelda until it becomes apparent that the structure everyone whined about was the very thing that held past titles together.

As much as I love 3d mario games, I cannot see this game being better than BOTW. Can it be a truly amazing game? Yeah, I think so. BOTW and Mario Odyssey are prime examples why I buy Nintendo hardware.
