^This. The storytelling itself is quite good. Exemplary, even. The story itself, however, is like most things in Half-Life 2, which is to say... mediocre.

I'm not a big fan of Half Life 2 but the fact it still gets so much attention, even now, well it speaks volumes.

The characters are all right but no better or worse than any other game. Granted, Lamar and the doc are entertaining but there's more to it than that. And of course, Gordon is a plank of wood.

To each their I guess. THe story telling and characters are the only reason I go back and play the titles Since the gameplay (since the gunplay hasn't aged well).

he's not really a character imo. He's a projection of yourself if that makes sense.

Characters, execution, the Combines demise, the enigmatic Gman and his motives, the twists, the Vortigaunts hidden agenda, Episode 2s ending and what it means... everything is just epic about it imo. It's a standard alien invasion story, but the way it's executed is near perfection. The epic journey of being hunted across a dystopian city, which slowly unravels it's secrets over time, just amazing.

it's a fun game with a decent story, not exceptionally great, but you're asking this question now(?!), this game came out between 6 or 7 years ago, game standards change quickly if you haven't noticed

The story is epic. I don't care how many twists a story has or how overwhelmingly complicated and multi-layered it becomes, Half Life's is epic, mysterious, more than meets the eye if you check wikipedia and feels realistic...as though it could happen, instead of being some regular old blockbuster.

no no no no no, hl2 story is CRAP, but what is amazing is THE STORY TELLING, there is not cutscnes you have to explroe the game world and the narrrative and pacing is alwso brilliant, remember, some guy in the bar might have a crappy story, but the way he tells it makes it interesting and not tedious

Yup, the stories suprisingly deep. I'm pretty certain 90% of people who says the story sucks didn't pay attention to it during Half Life 1 or 2. The Combine are awesome too. I love how they take form of the most dominent species on the planet they're invading. Also I like how they tame aliens (Striders being the best example). It's just awesome, It feels realistic, organic, believable. :)

In a nutshell, Half-Life 2's story is very literary with a lot of subtext and amazing depth for a video game. It helps if you keep in mind that the basic plot that pushes the player forward is only a very small portion of the overall narrative. It helps to pay attention to things like newspaper clippings, graffiti, random comments from NPCs, Dr. Breen's monologs, and so on because that's where the layers really start to peel back.

I didn't realize so many people also thought HL2 was not all that special. The storytelling felt unique, and some of the environments were pretty cool, but the game as a whole didn't stand out.

Everything about the game is awesome. Sure the gunplay may not feel all "CoD" or whatever, but it's unique.

The storytelling is awesome and the story is really weird, mysterious, and the games don't really explain much about it, so you want more.

Nooooooooooo!!! That bastard!!! I knew he was up to something!!

Anyway, story itself is crap and this makes me NOT care about the storytelling... in fact it pisses me off how Alyx keeps getting me in trouble and forcing me to do stuff I don't want.

I hate Alyx. I would've loved to see her dead.

Half-Life is a perfect example of a game that get's a free pass on a lot of issues (face it, the game is not as great as people say it is).

However, when these issues are ignored, there is a lot of charm and great art/level design that Valve put into Half-Life 2, that it's hard not like the game.

TO be honest I never hear too many people talking about the gameplay. Sure, back in 2004 they did (which it did have great gameplay during that time). Most of the praise is for it's characters and the storytelling.

Story = story. details about locations, characters, plot, ect.

Storytelling = presentation. How its displayed or relayed to the viewer. HL2 had great presentation, but story was a bit weak and gameplay definitely did not age well

The great thing about the story is the way it's told, ther aren't any cut scenes and a lot of the story is hidden in the actual game and not directly told to you. Levels like the one in Eli's lab are there for you to mess/look around and pic up on clues. Gordan Freeman is essentially an empty character that YOU are supposed to filling. The game is supposed to only be seen from your view, it's why I feel the immersion in the game is astounding.

Keep in mine that back in 2004 the game looked great, played great and had a very unique way of telling it's story. The story it's self isn't really anything new, aliens from another dimension invade but there's parts of it that make it very intriguing. G-Man especially is an interesting bit to the story. It's completely understandable that console gamers can't see it for what it was since they got the game nearly 4 years later.

The game didn't stand out? Maybe it doesn't now because every shooter since has been heavily influenced by Half-Life 2's narrative and gameplay style, but at the time of its release it was an unprecedented gaming experience.
