Breath of the Wild sold more than Elden Ring last week.

Although BotW released over 5 years ago, it seems the game is still selling like crazy. I was shocked when i looked at the latest numbers from Japan, and such an old open world game was still being played by so many new gamers. Didnt everyone already play this game, how is it still one of the top sellers in the world for 2022? Elden Ring hit some pretty impressive numbers for a PS4 title though.

@mesome713: oof Belden ring taking hits this week. First player count dropping off a cliff, and now the sales tanking even lower than the 6 year old game BoTW. Well BoTW is a masterpiece so I understand, but still this is shameful.

Probably some parents that made the mistake of buying digital and now they realize the limitations when other family members want to play it on their Switch, so they need multiple copies

Japan is Nintendo Land. It's impressive enough that Elden Ring sold over a million there despite not being on a Nintendo system.

Day by day I feel like regretting not getting a Switch.

There are two things wrong with the OPs post.

1) They only log physical sales data - this means that while BOTW could also be beating ER in the digital market, and overall, but we have no evidence this is true. I take it the OP has done his due diligence and has taken the digital sales because at the moment all he can say is they are selling more physical copies - which is probably a result from new Switch owners.

2) The website I went to, Gematsu, states these are estimated figures - how can we accurately say what is being sold on estimates?

Also on another thread someone claimed that there was no fast travel in ER - there is you can fast travel from anywhere to an activated site of grace.

Can we keep these things accurate guys?

Both seem to be good games - although I have only played one - not being a Switch owner. One thing he can say is that Nintendo is doing a better job than Sony at getting new units on the shelves.

I never said BOTW is a "casual" game. What are you on about? What i've been saying for ages is that the game is empty, hollow and runs at 17fps. No matter what Nintendo wants, they can't do anything with their 2003 Nokia phones tech they're working with.

Try harder. Soon to be half a year since it came out, and its still super high up on twitch, and this is a singleplayer game we're talking about. Nobody even knows where BOTW is on twitch. Irrelevant game is irrelevant.

If BOTW was multiplat, it wouldn't have been noticed lmao. In fact, it would've been heavily criticized for being this empty and feeling like a title from 2002. But because Nintendo standards are almost two decades behind the rest, people were impressed with what Nintendo was able to achieve on their potato. This applies to most titles released (minus the 3D marios because nobody does platformers these days) by Nintendo, not just Zelda. Be glad its exclusive. Otherwise it wouldn't have been noticed because its so far behind its competition. Switch offers what the 360 was offering in 2005 lol. That's where we're at with them. Its sad.

At launch, yes. We're over that. BOTW got buried by ER. All future open world titles will be compared to ER, and not BOTW. I predicted it ages ago, and was right as always.

BOTW is being talked 5 years later because its on a system with 110m systems sold, and there's literally nothing else worth talking about on that system. Like literally. A launch game is the only title on the system that left a mark. Everything else is forgettable.

If everything on the switch was forgettable it wouldnt have had sold 110 million copies.

Also, BotW is still being talked to even today. Even after Elden Ring. Also, BotW does a lot of things better than Elden Ring. I mean, Elden Ring kinda sucked ;)

That is where you're wrong. When a system is aimed at people that know nothing about gaming, they will buy it just because its new or popular. Since there's no competition in the portable space, its bound to be popular, even if it had nothing else but WiiU ports.

When BOTW2 comes out, it will be bombed by ER comparisons, and it will lose in the large majority of them. Even during reviews, many reviewers will compare it to ER, and it will lose in those comparisons. You simply cannot match such an ambitious title when your game is developed for potato specs. Devs are bitchin' about Series S's specs lol i let you imagine what they'd be thinking about the Switch specs if anything worthwhile was being made for it in the 3rd party space. I bet you the damn dlc for ER will destroy BOTW2 lol. You heard it, a damn dlc!

To be fair, BOTW isn't in the top 10 of April NPD.

What an absurd claim on your part. Do I need to remind you how the Switch has a higher ammount of high scoring games on Metacritic than the PS4 did, on a year by year basis?

No it won't be compared to Elden Ring. The Open Worlds of Elden Ring and BotW are entirely different beasts. At most we might see some comparisons about how reward structures work, but while Elden Ring is more akin to your typical Skyrim Open World. The Open World of BotW 2, if the first is anything to go by, will be more of a giant physics sandbox. The Open World of BotW2's main competition will be that of BotW 1.

yet still wouldn't of outsold Elden ring, and again BOTW didn't chart in the top 20 in Europe.
