Pretty damn impressive.

Unity’s Demo Team, creators of “Adam”(2016) and “The Blacksmith” (2015), are excited to announce Book of the Dead, a first-person interactive story showcasing the capabilities of Unity 2018 for powering high-end visuals for game productions.

Visually it looks amazing but if it can't do that on anything other then a walking simulator then who cares.

That's just a tech demo for a new graphics engine.

I'll believe it when I actually see it running other than some video made to look like gameplay. There's thousands of supposed "gameplay" videos out there that fooled us, some with even HUD on to make them more realistic "gameplay"... this doesnt even present that. So yeah... I'll take this video with a grain of salt until I do actually see it running real time

But if so then yes, amazing graphics

Well think about it. That level of graphics, if not better, in full-on action / adventure / RPG games, FPS, etc.

There will be enough GPU TFlops coupled with decent CPU (this time, Zen/Zen+/Zen2 family) combined with next generation memory (GDDR6 if not HBM2/3) that once developers get to grips with PS5 / Xbox Next hardware, they'll create games that definitely look a generation beyond what PS4/XBone can do, and still far surpass PS4 Pro/Xbox One X.

Obviously PCs will do even more, but next gen console hardware will be the new 'lowest common denominator' and raise all boats.

Honestly, i get the feeling that "next gen" will actually be a graphical downgrade, with the next generation of consoles being some form of electronic brain-cage that puts you in a wire-frame world that is fully interactable through a brain to machine interface.

Graphically it looks awesome (specially using Unity), but it looks dull as **** as a walking simulator.

Outstanding visuals, BUT we're talkin' about Unity here. What kind of monster do you need to run this, or how many years you need to spend optimizing this to make it run on a reasonably priced setup. From my experience Unity games tend to suffer from piss poor performance with screen tearing and such.

That's down to the developers, not the engine as there's also some Unity games that perform really well.

I think you should read up on Unity 2018 to get an idea of why these visuals are possible.

Yeah maybe I should. All the Unity titles I've played on consoles have run like ****.

Inside runs flawlessly, Abe, Ori and Cuphead also runs equally great. The performance of games using this engine or any is very dependent on the developer. Fortunately 2018 is making great performance easier with their scriptable render pipeline and their platform templates. So you will see better performing Unity games in the future but the quality will still be up in the air.

Same with The Forest. That game runs pretty awesomely even on lower end hardware.

Looks good, parts remind me of the Witcher but with a much higher level of detail. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see anything besides a walk-through. Can the system handle game paced running or would it hit loading/streaming issues? If the gameplay sucks, then the game will suck regardless of the graphics.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: What is a walking sim? I don't know any.

I do know story driven games when instead of killing everyone you see, you have to explore, interact with objects, learn lore etc.

These games were always around, so when i see someone calling them walking sim, a very young person comes to my mind.

Oh god, the Depth of Field, Motion Blur and slow texture loading makes it look like a completely different thing all together. No wonder they spent most of the time looking at the ground.

Unity can only pull such graphics in a Tech Demo. Anything with a semblance of scale and a bit a complexity with make the engine come crumbling down. There's a reason Unity is mostly used for Mobile and UE4 is the defacto choice for consoles and PC games. UE4 has the right balance of tools, power and performance.
