Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still at ‘DAY ZERO’ OF DEVELOPMENT

"So much of the game right now consists of concepts and ideas, and it’ll be quite some time before we see them put into practice. Ancel says that 2018 is too early to expect the game’s release, though he hopes to have a new version of Beyond Good & Evil 2 ready for E3 next year, which will be “as close as possible to the trailer.”

That trailer ignited hope in the game’s vocal fanbase, who have been waiting years to learn just what’s happening with the game. It seems that Ancel has finally decided just what kind of game he wants to make — and next comes the hard part. “Now we are really building the game,” he says.

"Ancel also wants to treat Beyond Good & Evil 2 as something of an early access title, with a community of players offering feedback and testing early prototypes. The version of the game I saw, meanwhile, was still in a very early state. The graphics were mostly placeholder (Ancel says that “two weeks ago there were no graphics”) while aspects like combat and any kind of narrative aspect had yet to be implemented".

And...there goes all that excitement.

If you look at their Space Monkey page t's pretty clear that they have barely started the development, yes. Which is sad because that means it will likely take 4-5 years before this can come out. But it is still alive and by the creative directors emotional response I get the feeling he fought for this for a looong time and is finally getting the go-ahead. And by getting people involved in helping out with the development I feel like it would be even harder for them to bail out a second time. This time it's happening.

this is sure to be cancelled after vavendi's takeover. prime 4 and ff7R are likely to come out before this...and they are way off as well.

I'm not looking forward to it anyway, if the trailer is anything to go by. That was not Beyond Good and Evil. I mean the cussing every 5 seconds. Lack of empathy or beauty. No Jade or the pig. I'm not completely going to cut out the game, but what I'm seeing from that trailer doesn't impress.

All that money spent on that shit trailer could have been spent on development.

The swearing was probably added to garner attention from the audience who thinks the game is for "kids".

What a weird way for them to waste a truckload of money on creating a trailer for a (still) non-existent game...
The trailer was one of E3's highlights for me. This feels like a kick in the balls.

Hopefully we get a statement from Ubi soon saying that the trailer was made using in-game assets.

Beyond Good and Evil was niche when it released over 14 years ago.

I'm not sure there many fans even left tbh lol.

It's similar to Kingdom Hearts 3 where they waited too long to make a sequel.

If you read the interview with Kotaku or RPS i forget which, it goes into more detail. The main problem is no one had the tech for them to do seamless surface to orbit to interstellar transitions with the detail and control they want. They spent a long time working on the tech and all the visual stuff at present is just placeholders. Ancel talked about how when you are on a planet the sunrise is a real sunrise and not just lights moving through the sky-box, because they have modeled the orbit and rotation of the planet around the system's star which is the main light-source. Sounded really neat IMO.

I'm still optimistic, it looks way better than most of the other crap out of E3 this year.

Michel Ancel is working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 and Wild as acting director.

Ubisoft Montpellier (Rayman Legends, ZombiU, Beyond Good & Evil) are working on BG&E 2 while is being developed by a new team founded by Ancel consisting of developers out of Montpellier.

I generally like Michel Ancel's work so I'm looking forward to seeing how both projects work out. Ancel is directing both but given the dev teams are based in the same city, it may not divide his attention too much. Still, both projects sound like they're in their early stages. It might be a while before we see them surface.

Yeah, yet it's audience built up overtime. Still, small or not, Ubisoft is alienating the BGE fans more than Nintendo is Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero fans.

Ubisoft are some of the biggest trolls in the industry, they know how to get "shock value" from their presentations though.

It's the aftermath that usually bites them in the ass.

Thats odd, because all the interviewers that spoke with Ancel and his team at their studio talk about how much they have working already. They built entire cities and planets and their engine already allows them to traverse these levels with vehicles and characters on an interplanetary scale.

They even had gameplay running behind them on stage at Ubisoft's conference.

Also it's been in development for 3 years and they intend to get a workable beta running next year.

Wait......didn't they announce the game a few years back (also with a trailer)? They've literally done nothing on it since then? Like, not even a core gameplay idea/concept to develop a game from? Sweet Jebus. See you in 2020 (or worse) game.

They have all this bad habit to announce their game just when they bagan to develop it. Think of metroid 4 and Final Fantasy 7 remake....

Its one of those games that are on my list of "if it comes out yea I'll check it out, if not then bleh!"..not getting excited/hype about it anymore". :P

I genuinely believe that most of the people clamoring about this game have never even played the first one.

What makes you think this?

The first game was a decent title but nothing exceptionally remarkable or highly adopted, over time it has become something trendy, something people bandwagon around.

Usually when developers take more than 15 years to bring out a sequel to a game, the sequel is bad. I hope this is one of the rare exceptions though.

It might be little up in the air at this point, but this is still the closest chance that Beyond Good and Evil has gotten to getting a sequel. Michael Ancel seemed rather excited and passionate about it at E3, plus they have a huge team working on it.

That, and Ancel was the creative director for Rayman Origins and Legends, so I'll have some faith in him.

It also doesn't have Jade, so why even bother.
